Learning Objectives Discuss Plastic Waste Removal on board

US Navy vessels Explain procedures for trash removal and

plastic waste storage Explore preventative measures for

reducing waste on-board

PRIME After 1999 (surface) & 2009 (submarines),

Plastic disposal at sea is PROHIBITED! All plastic must be maintained on board to

be disposed upon return to port Minimizing the solid waste you bring on

board is critical to the success of this process

Storage space is limited, everywhere! Food service operations are the #1

generator of trash on board ships

Plastic Waste Management Food Service containers should be

thoroughly cleans prior to disposal Anything that can be procured in other

than plastic containers is better (when possible).

Follow the procedure!

Processing & Storage (Surface)

First, plastic waste is cleaned and stored in designated containers/areas

Then, they are loaded into the plastic waste processor that melts them down to save storage space on board ships at-sea

The result, is this plastic “puck” that drastically reduces the space required to store the waste at-sea.

Processing & Storage (Subs)

After compacting the plastics, remove the plastic bag from the TDU can.

Using the Submarine Odor Barrier Bags (OBBs), double bag the first compacted bag.

Finally, heat seal the bags and store for disposal upon return to port.
