CHRISTMAS 2012 ISSUE 6
theatreIn Derbyshire

In association with the highly acclaimed Birmingham Stage Company, (creators of hugely successful stage shows, Horrible Histories and James and the Giant Peach), classic children’s book, ‘Charlotte’s Web’, comes to the stage at Derby Theatre this Christmas from Fri 7 December until Fri 11 January, promising a fun-fi lled festive treat for the family.
E.B White’s popular tale tells the story of a young girl called Fern who befriends Wilbur - a pig. Wilbur is no ordinary pig and needs to be saved from becoming Christmas dinner! To the rescue comes a witty spider called Charlotte who conjures up a miraculous plan which they hope will keep him alive.
With a stellar cast at the ready to wow the audience this Christmas, Primary Times caught up with the star of the show, Richard James-Neale, who plays the character of beloved Wilbur in the production.
Charlotte’s Web fans are really excited for this year’s show. What can they expect from the production being staged at Derby Theatre?
I think that this is a production with something for everyone. Turning well-loved books into fi lms, plays and especially musicals can often be a tricky business, and trying to remain true to the original text whilst telling the story in a new form is a delicate operation. But I am very excited with the direction the production is moving in. Audiences are sure to love the music,
the wonderful costumes, the great set we have and the energy of the fantastic cast I am proud to be a part of. For me, the most important thing is that the audience fall in love with the characters and really care about them and their individual journeys. We still have a lot of work to do in our rehearsals, but I am very excited that we are in the process of creating something very special.
Tell us about Wilbur the Pig’s best qualities; what makes him lovable?
I believe it is his innocence. Wilbur views the world through a
child’s eyes and throughout the play he is discovering and seeing things for the fi rst time. When I read the play and the book I remember being taken back to my own childhood, asking my parents questions about the world around me, hungry for knowledge and thirsty for answers. I think that we all secretly want to be like Wilbur because he is completely without prejudice; he only sees the best in others and he appreciates simple pleasures like splashing in puddles and playing with his friends. In a world of danger and uncertainty it is his innocence that allows him to be free, and that is why I love him.
What message does the relationship between Charlotte and Wilbur’s characters give out to the audience?
I think the most important thing about the relationship between Charlotte and Wilbur is the fact that they are so different. They are so unlike each other that it would be easy for them to not be friends, but they make the effort to make their friendship work. I think this is a great example for young people in
an ever-changing, multicultural society. ‘You don’t have to be exactly like someone to like them’, Charlotte says. I think the world might be a better place if we remembered that.
You mentioned you had read the book before starring in Charlotte’s Web. What did you think of the book?
As the book is so famous, I did know the story of Charlotte’s Web, but I must admit that I only read it when I knew that I would be auditioning for the job and immediately loved it. I know it is a book for children but I really enjoyed returning to my childhood and getting lost in Fern’s world, on the farm with her animal friends. I also like how the book openly deals with the realities of life and death. One of the other actors in the company summed it up perfectly: ‘Charlotte’s Web is an enduring classic because it is a story of friendship, hope and is a great introduction to loss.’ I couldn’t agree more.
What was the best part of rehearsing for Charlotte’s Web?
Rehearsals have been fantastic! I always love rehearsals and understand why they call it a play: throwing myself into a new environment with new people, rolling around, singing, dancing, pretending; it is like being a child again. I consider myself very lucky to be an actor because I get to play for a living.
Tickets are priced from £9, family tickets (for 4 people) from ONLY £36.00, school tickets ONLY £8.50 each (plus 1 ticket free with every 10 purchased). For more information or to book tickets, call the Box Offi ce on 01332 59 39 39 or book online at www.derbytheatre.co.uk

CHRISTMAS 2012 ISSUE 11
The Governing Body, staff and parents are truly excited by the announcement that sees the development of the Senior Department and Sixth Form as a co-educational school that will welcome both boys and girls from age 11-18. Our fi rst intake of boys into Year 7 will be in September 2013.
The school remains totally committed to maintaining our exceptional standards of academic achievement for all students throughout the transition period and welcomes interest from parents and pupils wishing to join us.
We are building from a position of strength, as represented by the success of our move to true co-education in Grangemount Nursery and Junior School to Ockbrook School, in 2011. Our decision to embrace co-education is a positive response to the growing number of boys benefi ting from the high quality education that we offer in Grangemount whose parents are keen for them to continue to be educated at Ockbrook School.
Grangemount entry commences from the age of two until the age of 11. We are registered for the Early Years Government Funding Scheme which entitles all three and four year olds to 15 hours
of free nursery education at an establishment of their parents’ choice. We also run a holiday club during the school holidays for children from the age of two until the age of 12. Progression into Ockbrook School is automatic for our Grangemount students, and for external applicants our Entrance & Scholarship Examinations for Year 7 and Year 12 entry into Ockbrook School will take place on Wednesday 23rd January 2013.
Ockbrook School caters for pupils from the age of 11 through to the end of their A level studies in our very successful Sixth Form. Higher Education destinations are diverse and include Oxbridge, Russell Group and international universities with students going on to study a wide range of subjects including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Music, Art, History and Modern Languages to name but a few.

Financial Assistance is available to applicants by way of a means-tested bursarial award of up to 100% of the tuition fees, and scholarships are available for Year 7 and Year 12 Entry in the fi elds of Academia, Music, Art, Sport and Drama.
If you are interested in receiving further information on either Grangemount or Ockbrook School, or to book a tour of the school and a taster day in one of our current classes for your son or daughter, please contact the Admission’s Secretary, Jo Fowkes, on 01332 673532 or email [email protected].
