THIS CHRISTMAS Derby Theatre will cast a web of enchantment over the young and young at heart and present one of the most popular children’s stories of all time, E. B. White’s ‘Charlotte’s Web’. It will run from Fri 7 Dec until Sat 12 Jan, with tickets at great prices!

Derby Theatre will present ‘Charlotte’s Web’ in association with the highly acclaimed Birmingham Stage Company (creators of the phenomenally popular stage shows, Horrible Histories, George’s Marvellous Medicine and James and the Giant Peach). Join us for the story of a young girl called Fern who befriends Wilbur, a pig. Wilbur is no ordinary pig however and needs to be saved from becoming Christmas dinner! To the rescue comes a witty spider called Charlotte who conjures up a miraculous plan which they hope will keep him alive. Though small in stature, Charlotte‘s big heart leads Wilbur to understand and accept his place in the world.

‘Charlotte’s Web’ is a story of loyalty and friendship woven with beauty and enchantment and which is as full of strength and as delicately magical as Charlotte’s web itself. Will Charlotte and Fern be able to save Wilbur? Come and fi nd out!

Tickets are priced from £9, family tickets (for 4 people) from ONLY £36.00, school tickets ONLY £8.50 each (plus 1 ticket free with every 10 purchased). For more information and to book tickets call the Box Offi ce on 01332 59 39 39 or book online at www.derbytheatre.co.uk

cinema to meet his friends, whilst gaining points by using basic fi rst aid

along the way. This is an easy to use tool for children and

prior fi rst aid knowledge is not required. The game can be

your family safe on the nightDerbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is keen to keep people safe

during the run up to Bonfi re Night and on the night itself.

If a fi re gets out of control, dial 999 and call out the fi re and rescue service. For further bonfi re and fi rework safety tips visit our website www.derbys-fi re.gov.uk

If you must light a bonfi re, follow these safety tips:

• Site the bonfi re well away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, overhead cables, trees and shrubs and well away from your fi reworks

• Before lighting, make sure there are no animals hiding inside

• Be careful when building the bonfi re, so it does not collapse once lit

• Don’t burn foam fi lled furniture, aerosols or tins of paint or bottles

• Never use fl ammable liquids – paraffi n or petrol – to light the fi re

• Keep everyone, especially children, away from the fi re

• In case of emergency, keep buckets of water, a garden hose of a fi re extinguisher ready

• When the party is over, pour water on the embers before leaving

We all know that fi reworks can be great fun if handled responsibly, however we would encourage people to go to an organised event if possible rather than having fi reworks in their own garden. If you do intend to have fi reworks at home, do follow the safety code:

• Keep fi reworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on each fi rework. Read the instructions by torch light and not a naked fl ame and always buy fi reworks from a reputable source

• Light fi reworks at arm’s length using a safety fi rework lighter or fuse wick

• Stand back after lighting

• NEVER go back to a fi rework once lit, it may go off in your face

• Keep a bucket of water handy

• Collect used fi reworks with care, douse with water and bury them or place in a metal container

• Keep children under control

• Keep pets indoors

• Take care with sparklers – young children should not handle these

• NEVER throw fi reworks

• NEVER keep them in your pocket

The Governing Body, staff and parents are truly excited by the announcement that sees the development of the Senior Department and Sixth Form as a co-educational school that will welcome both boys and girls from age 11-18. Our first intake of boys into Year 7 will be in September 2013. The school remains totally committed to maintaining our exceptional standards of academic achievement for all students throughout the transition period and welcomes interest from parents and pupils wishing to join us. We are building from a position of strength, as represented by the success of our move to true co-education in the

Grangemount, Nursery and Junior School to Ockbrook School, in 2011. Our decision to embrace co-education is a positive response to the growing number of boys who are now benefiting from the high quality education that we offer in Grangemount whose parents are keen for them to continue to be educated at Ockbrook School. Boys and girls now mix naturally in our junior school and we believe that the gradual move to co-education will enable us to maintain the strong family feeling that is inherent throughout the school as well as enabling our pupils to prepare better for life in the wider world, at university and in the work place. Long-term demographic and social trends identified in research undertaken by independent educational consultants and the Independent Schools Council indicates that more and more parents are seeking a balanced educational experience for their children. This is not the first time in Ockbrook’s long history that both boys and girls have both benefited from an exceptional academic offering within a setting that provides a broad experience of extra-curricular activities that are truly accessible to all. We see this as a perfect opportunity to broaden the learning experience for all our pupils. Over the coming months the school will be investing in appropriate facilities, infrastructure and staffing to deliver an enhanced curriculum for both girls and boys which will include extending the opportunities available in sport and other extracurricular activities, from which all our pupils will benefit.

Grangemount Entry commences from the age of

two until the age of 11. We are registered for the Early Years Government Funding Scheme which entitles all three and four year olds to 15 hours of free nursery education at an establishment of their choice. We also run a holiday club during the school holidays for children from the age of two until the age of 12. Progression into Ockbrook School is automatic for our Grangemount students and for external applicants our Entrance & Scholarship Examinations for Year 7 and Year 12 Entry into Ockbrook School will take place on Wednesday 23rd January 2013. Ockbrook School caters for pupils from the age of 11 through to the end of their A level studies in our very successful Sixth Form at the end of Year 13. Higher Education destinations are diverse and include Oxbridge, Russell Group and International Universities with students going on to study a wide range of subjects including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Music, Art, History, Modern Languages to name but a few.

Financial Assistance is available by way of a means-tested Bursarial Award of up to 100% of the Tuition Fees and Scholarships are available for Year 7 and Year 12 Entry in the fields of Academia, Music, Art, Sport and Drama. If you are interested in receiving further information on Grangemount and/or Ockbrook School we would invite you to contact the Admission’s Secretary, Jo Fowkes, on 01332 673532 or [email protected] who will be able to discuss your options with you in more detail and arrange for your son or daughter to have a tour of the school and a taster day in one of our current classes.

Ockbrook School is proud to announce the introduction of Co-Education for Year 7 entry from 2013

‘Licence to Thrill’ was part of Derby Theatretrain’s year long 20th

birthday celebration, a jawdropping tribute to James Bond!

33 students from Derby Theatretrain once again have performed a unique show, with over 1200 Theatretrain students from across the UK and nine primary/secondary schools. Featuring over 1200 Theatretrain students from all over the UK, the gala performance was a resounding success. The 22 piece orchestra played a medley of different hits from the title track ‘Licence to Thrill’ to Shirley Bassey’s ‘Goldfi nger’. The hits were infectious! The 600 strong choir sang and moved in time, soloists shone and the 600 performers told the story in unison. Students have been working on the project for the last 6 months which culminated in the arena of one the world’s most prestigious venues, the Royal Albert Hall. Next year you could have the chance to perform at the O2 in London for our 20th anniversary show spectacular!! Our open day is on Saturday 20th October. Classes run from 2p.m. til 5p.m. every Saturday. For more information contact:Laura Turner 01509 889480 or [email protected]

OCTOBER HALF TERM 2012 ISSUE 20

The Celtic druids of ancient Ireland celebrated their New Year on November 1st with a festival called ‘Samhain’. On the eve of this festival they would build a huge bonfi re to drive out the evil spirits before the onset of winter. The Christian church decided that the 1st November should be All Saints Day (or All Hallows as it was known in medieval times) and 31st October, the eve of this feast day became known as Hallows Eve – now called Halloween. We also get our tradition of wearing masks and dressing up in costumes from the Celts. They wore costumes made from animal heads and furs to the Samhain bonfi res to confuse the evil spirits!

The tradition of carving lanterns from pumpkins

is said to have originated in Ireland when a

mischievous blacksmith named Jack struck a

deal with the devil and was denied entry into

Heaven.

The story goes that the devil gave Jack a small ember (glowing coal)

in a carved out turnip to light his way in the darkness. When the Irish

emigrated to America, they took the tradition with them but used

pumpkins instead of turnips!

You could carve a traditional face into your pumpkin or, for a change,

why not try a bat, spider or cat shape instead. Make sure you have

an adult to help and be careful not to cut yourself. There are so many

sizes and shapes of pumpkins, turnips and squash available now

– why not stack them on top of each other and stick together with

toothpicks to create your own Halloween monster!

Trick or treating can be great fun but you should remember that some people can fi nd trick or treaters knocking on their door frightening, so only go to people you know or who have a pumpkin lantern displayed. Get yourself a great costume – dressing up is part of the fun.Make sure you’ve put a lantern in the window and have some treats ready by the door for when your friends come knocking.

If you do go trick or treating, follow these safety tips• Never trick-or-treat alone, ideally have a grown up or

at least 2 friends with you.• Carry a torch, wear a watch and tell someone what

time you will be back.• On dark roads, make sure you are visible to cars.• Only accept treats in the doorway, NEVER go

inside a stranger’s house.• Don’t throw ANYTHING at ANYONE!

Trick or treating can be great fun but you should Trick or treating can be great fun but you should

Fill a large basin with water. Drop in several apples.Kneel or stand by the side of the basin with your hands behind your back. Take a deep breath and open your mouth wide. Now comes the bobbing. Try to grab the apple with your teeth.

Put a bowl of lemon juice on the table. Give each guest a toothpick or a paintbrush and a piece of paper. Each guest must dip their toothpick or paintbrush into the lemon juice and then write a message on the paper. When it is dry swap messages with each other. If you hold the paper in front of a light bulb, the letters will darken revealing the secret message.

1. Cut out a cat shape from black felt or black cardboard or even paper.2. Use fabric paint or glue to add the eyes, nose, and whiskers.3. Cut out several tails from black felt or cardboard or paper and sew or glue the tails to a hook or pin that can be attached to the cat.4. Stick the cat shape onto a wall or door.5. Each person takes a turn (with a blindfold on) to try to stick the tail onto the cat.

WITCH’S FINGERSCook some sausages and cut them lengthways. Fan 5 of them out on a plate as fi ngers and put a dollop of ketchup on the end of each of them for red fi ngernails.FROG SPAWNMake up some green or yellow jelly and pour into small moulds or dishes. Leave for a few minutes to partially set and then add in some black sweets like wiggly worms or black jelly tots. Leave to set fully and then tell your friends to eat the tadpoles!

Wrap a large (clean!) bowl or basin in black paper to make your cauldron & decorate. Fill the cauldron

full of “witch’s brew.” Begin with a mixture of your favourite fruit juices, add some fi zzy water (or lemonade), add chunks of fruit (cut in star & moon shapes) and a few drops of green food colouring for an evil looking brew.
