To unify the various building types, Lot 4 will be predominantly Cambridge Gault brick. Tiles, bond-patterns and red brick highlights are then introduced to articulate particular moments and accent entrances, to bring a sense of delight to the materiality of the development.

Sheltered access deck walkways and gatehouses will be lined with timber.

Facade articulation

Following advice from Planners, ABA carried out a number of studies on the brickwork for our Veteran Oak Apartment building to rusticate the base with differing mortar colours and finishes.

We have instead opted to strengthen the solidity of the base by adding a low (300mm) wall with a reconstituted stone sill to each of the ground floor windows.

This helps to identify building entrances, improve the feeling of defensible space for residents and helps to subtly differentiate the base when the buildings are viewed as an ensemble from the Veteran Oak Gardens.

Basement Access Ramp

ABA propose a discrete, automatic, fob-access gate set within a lined recess and lined to match other openings in the facade, such as the window reveals and balconies.

Planted pergolas help to reduce the visual impact of cars when viewed from the units above.

5.5.1 Veteran Oak Garden Apartments

Fenestration development

The Facades of the Veteran Oak Apartments are designed as a contemporary response to the renaissance palazzo.

As with a typical palazzo, the facade is accented by an open loggia-style penthouse level and anchored by a solid ground floor base.

The design has then been developed using a primary rhythm of vertical punctuations. This rhythm was developed from a more free-form composition to a regular and solid pattern, reflecting the strong urban values of the palazzo typology.
