Park House English School is an independent co-educational, private day school situated in Doha,thecapitaloftheStateofQatar. ThePrimaryDepartmentisdivided intoEarlyYears(twoEY1andthreeEY2Classes), KeyStage1(threeYear1and2Classes)andKeyStage2(threeYear3,4,5,and6Classes).It provides an education in Englishwhich broadly follows the National Curriculum for England complementedbytheInternationalPrimaryCurriculum(I.P.C.).
In September 2005 the school relocated to a new and spacious site, with excellent purpose builtclassrooms.Thesportfacilitiesincludeanindoorsportshall,25mswimmingpool,afootballpitch and amulti-purpose court. There is also a large auditorium, libraries, modern ICT suites and a livelymusicdepartment.
Park House English School aims to provide anexcellentallroundeducationforeach child in akind and caring environment. A widerangeofacademic and extracurricular activities areoffered to the children to allow them todevelop fully, to build self confidenceandself-esteem and to respect others. The childrenenjoyavarietyofsportsthroughouttheyearandtherearemanymusicalanddramaticevents.

TheEarlyYearsDepartment
TheEarlyYearsDepartmentishousedinaseparateblock,whichisbrightandairy.Thereare two Nurseryclasses and three Reception classes - all staffed by qualified and experienced teachers.
Nursery seeks to providea structured,balanced,interestingandstimulating environment in whichyoung children may learn through their ownexperience, guided by sympathetic and caringadults. Formal 3 Rs work will not take place inNursery,butall the "ground work" necessary toprepare the child for entry to the EY2 class willbe covered. At this stage of development, it isimportant that children are neither bored byrepetitive tasks nor pushed beyond their mentalandphysicalabilities.
Reception(EY2)
ChildrenareintroducedtotheNationalCurriculumsubjectsEnglish,MathematicsandScience andtopicsoftheInternationalPrimaryCurriculum,whichembraceallothersubjectareas.Here theyallstarttolearntoreadandtoswim.Neverthelessthereisstilltimeforlearningthroughplay.
KeyStages1&2-Years1to6
Throughout the school there is a 4-form entry. Again all the members of staff are fully qualified andexperienced.Theaimistomakechildrenfeelateaseandsettledintheirsurroundings,so thattheycanmakeprogressanddeveloptheirskillsthoroughlyinreading,writingandarithmetic.
The school follows the National Curriculum for England andWales in the teaching of English, Mathsand Science. The International PrimaryCurriculum has been adopted to cover History, Geography,ArtandDesignTechnology. The curriculum is completedbyMusic, IT,PHSEand PE,providingthechildrenwithabroadeducation.
There is a systemof internalassessment and reporting so that each child's progress and developmentcanbenoted. Parents receiveawritten reportat theendofeach term.Thereare Parents'EveningsintheAutumnandSpringtermswhenthere isanopportunitytospeaktothe teacher about your child'sprogress.Teachers arehappyto speak toparentsatother times to discusschildren'sprogress.

English
In the Early Yearsbasic reading and writing is taught. Children are encouraged to take care withpresentation from an early age, and to express themselves clearly. The younger childrenreadfromawidevarietyof codedreadingschemes. Theyalsohaveweeklystructured lessons inspelling,grammar,comprehension,poetryanddrama. Emphasis is laidon imaginative writing which is accurate and wellexpressed. Thechildren’swork isdisplayedin theirclassroomsandthroughouttheschool. Handwritingis taught formallytoall classesand thereareopportunitiesforreadingtoanaudience.UseismadeoftheCambridgeSchemeforEnglish
Mathematics
TheCambridgeMaths Scheme is used throughout the PrimaryDepartment. This offers excellent basicmathematical skills as well as extension for more able students and reinforcementforthosewhorequireit.
Science
CambridgeScienceisusedthroughouttheschool.Thesubjectistaughtthroughtopicsand thechildrenareencouragedtodoinvestigationsandrecordaccurately.
French
FrenchistaughttoYear3-6topupilswhoarenotrequiredtostudyArabic.Theemphasisisonspeakingandlistening,intunewithI.G.C.S.E. requirements.
InformationTechnology
All the children have access to a computer, and spend some time each week on educationalprogrammes.As the children progress through the school they will increase their range of computerskills.
TheInternationalPrimaryCurriculum(IPC)
The IPC isa thematicmethodofdeliveringtheobjectivesoftheNational Curriculum. Stimulating topicsorunits lasting for severalweeks integrateGeography,History, Art andDesign Technology.Manyunitsalso incorporate learning targets in other curriculum areas, such as Science,ICT,MusicandP.E.,butdonotreplacetheexistingprogrammesinthosesubjects.
WiththeIPC,childrenfocusononetopicforaperiodofdaysratherthanchangingfromsubject tosubjecteachday.Theymay,forexample,concentrateonHistoryfortwoweeks,thenArtfor oneweek,dependingontheparticulartopic. AnadvantageoftheIPCmethodisthatthechildren are able tomaintain theirenthusiasmforasubjectastheybuildonactivitiesdaybydayrather thanhavingtoputthingsasideuntilnextweek’slesson.

Whyisitan“International”Curriculum? Itaimstopreparechildrenforthemodernworldinwhich theywill experiencedifferent cultures, mixwith many nationalitiesand quitepossibly seek employment invarious countries during their lifetime. All the IPC Units of work contain tasks specificallydesignedtofosteraninternationaloutlookwhileretaininganawarenessofone’sown culturalroots.
Music
Musicplaysan importantpart in the lifeof theschool. Childrenenjoymusic fromanearlyage andweaimtofosterthatpleasurebyencouragingthemtotakepartinmusicalactivities.We alsohaveexcellentschoolchoirs.
ArabicandKoran
These subjects are taught byArabic specialists. There aredailyArabic lessons for first language Arabicspeakers. OurMuslim pupilshaveKoranlessons.
PEandSwimming
Allschoolchildrenhaveweekly PEandSwimminglessons,whicharepartoftheschool curriculumandarecompulsory. Adoctor’scertificateisrequiredifforanyreasonyourchildmust beexcused.
PEkit,swimmingcostumesandtowelsmustbeclearlymarkedandcarriedinaPEbag(available fromtheUniformShop).
AfternoonActivities

Absence

The most responsible pupils in Year 6 are selected to be Primary School Prefects, House CaptainsandHeadBoyandHeadGirl. Theyhavevariousdutiestoperform.
ParentTeacherAssociation
The schoolhas anactive Parent/Teacher Association. An enthusiastic group of parents and teachersmeetsregularlytoarrangesocialandfund-raisingevents.Eventshaveincluded:GardenParties,FunDays,Family Festival, and trips for children. Each class/form aims to have a parent contact (classmother/father)actingasa linkbetweentheclassteacher,PTAandtheparents. Newmembersaremostwelcome.
