Primary @ Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers, I trust that all Reddam families had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. I hope too that this coming term will bring many moments of pleasure, as you share the learning journey with your children. As I moved through the school during the first few days of term, I was struck again by the exuberant spirit of the students and their enthusiasm to see their friends and teachers again. I am sure that many of us adults would do well to tap into that joyful spirit and to embrace each new day as an opportunity for learning and growth! An especially warm welcome to those joining the Reddam family for the first time. I have no doubt that you will soon get to know others, and I hope that in no time at all new chil-dren – and their parents – will be happily ensconced in the Reddam community. This term is once again a very full one, and everyone has hit the ground running, with two Year groups already having travelled away. Reports from the Year 5 and 6 teachers, as well as the excited and energised faces of the students on their return, were indicative of the stimulating programmes which they enjoyed. More thorough feedback is given fur-ther on in this newsletter of the Year 5 trip to Bathurst, and the Year 6 trip to Canberra, but I thank most sincerely those teachers who went along with the groups. Accompanying Year 5 were Nick Hawke, Tanya Bethune, Delia Harrington, James Mee, Amanda William, and Estelle Hoen; while the Year 6s had Matthew Carter, Denis Do, Belinda Tomarchio, Ju-dith Reen, Angela Orfanos, and Mark Bailey with them. Another undoubted highlight of the term will be the annual dramatic production, which always brings the best out of the students. Rehearsals for The Sound of Music will continue throughout the term, with the production taking place during the last week of term. There are surely few events on the school calendar which involve such a wide cross sec-tion of the school family, and the challenges are enormous, yet I know that, as in the past, we will be treated to an eye-opening spectacle. My best wishes to all involved. I am tremendously proud of Gabriel Stafford, who was one of the finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize competition and in the Packing Room Prize. These art competi-tions draw entries from far and wide and we are so pleased that Gabriel entered the Young Archie competition, especially as he entered his piece as a Reddam student. We continue to be inspired by his enthusiasm toward art, and congratulate him on his work being exposed to such a broad audience. Another young man bringing credit to his school is Egor Grachov, who won his individual event at the 2016 Hunter Winter Judo Championships. In addition, he came second in the Lake Macquarie Games Novice Teams Event and first in the Hunter Region Open Com-petition. Well done, Egor!

Next week is a full one, while Monday sees the school living out the Reddam motto of ‘We
Shall Give Back’, with the Moral Studies Clothing Drive. The theme of giving back to those less
fortunate than ourselves, or those struggling with health issues, continues on Friday, with a
Mufti Day in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. This fundraiser is close to our hearts and one the school has
supported for a number of years. Students are encouraged to wear RED clothing items on
the day.
The Year 3 students are off to The Australian Museum on Tuesday, which should be an enjoy-
able and fascinating outing, while the Year 3-12 Vocal Competition takes place in the Ade-
laide Hall at 7pm on Wednesday. This event is a high point on the Music calendar, and I
know that all attending will appreciate the considerable vocal abilities of our students. Also in
the Adelaide Hall at 7pm, but on Thursday, is an event which I know will be of interest to
many parents, particularly in this age of technology. The topic of the talk will be on Gaming
and Cyberbullying, and I strongly encourage your attendance at this event.
This term has ten weeks, and I am sure that as we head deeper into it our most recent restful
break will seem but a distant memory. Perhaps then would be a good time to recall this
cheerful quote: Laughter is an instant vacation. I wish you all a term with many moments of
laughter, and countless opportunities to enjoy your child’s progress and development. The
staff and I look forward to continuing this very special journey with you and your family.

What a lovely feeling it is to come back to school and be greeted by a chorus of voices, all
eager to tell us about the wonderful holidays they had. We listened to many stories about
wonderful faraway places and joined in with some of the exciting activities done locally. All
in all, the children came back rested, rejuvenated and keen to get started on their Term 3
work.
Some of the highlights of the holidays were:
Sophie: I went to Bali and swam all day in the pool. My Dad says I am a waterbaby.
Ruby: My best part of the holidays was playing with my cousins in Brisbane. I also went and
did all lovely things in Vacation Care.
Bronte: I went to Port Douglas, and I went on a very fast jetski.
Istvana: I went to New Zealand and played in the snow.
Micah: I went to Brisbane to see my cousins.
Ethan C: I went to the Hunter Valley Gardens.
Sienna: I went to Thredbo, and played in the snow which I really loved.

KINDERGARTEN
We have had a very busy start to Term 3. We have launched into our Science unit of work:
"Living Things''. We talked about how living things grow, move, reproduce, excrete waste and
take on nutrients. We read 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle and learnt about the sunflower’s life
cycle. We then used oil pastels and watercolours to create our very own sunflower pictures.
In English we have started reading and writing narratives. We discussed the importance of
having a beginning, middle and end and using interesting vocabulary to maintain the read-
er's interest.

YEAR 1
Year 2 has had a wonderful start to Term 3, which promises to be full of fun and exciting
learning activities. Students concentrated on their holiday recounts and had an opportunity
to share their experiences with their peers.
Students are enthusiastic about our topics in Science and Geography. We are going to study
different places and environments around the world, such as rainforests.
YEAR 2
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 20 Friday 22 July 2016 Page 7
The Year 3 students enjoyed a wonderful school break and have started Term 3 with a re-
freshed and enthusiastic attitude towards their learning. They are already excited about the
challenges that lie ahead and are keen to explore the new topics that await them across
the curriculum.
In addition to this, the students revisited their personal goals from the beginning of the year,
thoughtfully ascertaining whether they had been achieved or not, and eagerly set new
goals for the remainder of the year. They were reminded to make their goals
‘SMART’ (specific, meaningful, achievable, realistic and time-based) and showed an ever-
growing maturity in their responses to this task.
Here’s what some of the students said:
Natasha Green: ‘I think that I have achieved my goal, which was to get better at division.
My new goal is to improve my spelling.’
Zachary Sherman: ‘My goal at the beginning of the year was to improve in Maths. I think that
I still need to work on this and to know my times tables better.’
Daniel Wanis: ‘I think that my English has improved but I’m still going to work on my handwrit-
ing.’
Tahlia Alexiou: ‘I have definitely achieved my goals in Maths. My goal for the rest of the year
is to make sure I read every day.’

YEAR 3
The first week for Term 3 has certainly been a busy one, with exciting new topic areas being
introduced in both Science and History. In Science, we are investigating the topic ‘Our
Changing World’ which studies the solar system, earth and space beyond. Students have be-
gun their own Science investigations by exploring and researching the many questions they
have about this most interesting topic.
In History this term, students will continue exploring the history of Australian Aboriginals, and
special celebrations and commemorations of significance in our country. This topic looks at
how significant individuals, Aboriginal or Australian, groups and special events contributed to
the many changes in our communities over time. It has been wonderful for the teachers to
see the enthusiasm and independence already evident so early in the term, and we look for-
ward to the continuing progress from all our Year 4 students.

YEAR 1 MUSIC
The Year 1s were among the first classes to enjoy the new Music classroom. This week they
enjoyed an Orff Music lesson, during which they learned to sing, dance, explore, create
and play "Pease Porridge Hot".
It was a rainy but fun start to the Year 5 Bathurst trip!
The rain followed the Year 5s all the way from Sydney to Bathurst; however two great activi-
ties en route helped keep the spirits up. First stop was the Waradah Aboriginal Centre in Ka-
toomba for some painting and an exciting dance show. Later that day they travelled to Her-
itage Park for a sheep and cattle show. They watched some shearing and learnt about the
different types of livestock on Australian farms.
After a quick drive along the Mount Panorama race track, the Year 5s arrived at Bathurst
Goldfields and settled in for the days ahead. Gold panning, a fossil and mineral tour and a
trip to Jenolan Caves were some of the fun activities they enjoyed.
YEAR 5 CAMP
Canberra is home to a large part of Australia’s story and this week Year 6 have enjoyed ex-
ploring the cradle of our democracy, as well as the many cultural attractions of our capital
city.
In just three days we have covered a broad range of activities from visiting the Institute of
Sport, to exploring national treasures at Australia’s renowned galleries and learning about
how our country is run, as well as the role of state and federal governments.
The War Memorial was our first stop and it opened our eyes to the sacrifices made to form
our nation. Students were able to view primary historical sources and artefacts, and to pay
their respects to those who died serving their country.
The National Portrait Gallery was a fascinating way to explore the diversity of Australian iden-
tity through portraiture. Each painting and photograph told us a story of individuality and
achievement in Australia.
At the National Museum of Australia we were introduced to the lives of prominent Australians
through key objects. The activities, tour and our time for self-guided exploration of the gallery
helped to bring historical people and events to life.
We then took a drive to Mount Ainslie look-out in the north-eastern suburbs of Canberra for
picture-perfect views of the city. It was a great way to get our bearings and locate the plac-
es we had already visited.
This was followed by The Museum of Australian Democracy, which is also known as Old Parlia-
ment House. The tour highlighted what it means to be an informed and engaged citizen and
how lucky we are to vote in a free and fair way. We could see timelines and important
founding documents which relate to Australia’s democratic journey.
We also thoroughly enjoyed the Embassy Tour and seeing the flags of other nations we have
visited or come from, hung proudly at their gates.
The Telstra Tower was a beautiful place to visit at night. It rises a whopping 195.2 metres
above the summit of Black Mountain and Canberra’s night lights sparkled strikingly below the
viewing platform.
The teachers wisely saved the best till last and we spent our last morning in Canberra at
Questacon, The National Science and Technology Centre. We were tired but still had
enough energy to play and experiment. The centre brings science to life with hands-on activ-
ities and displays. Unlike most museums, their motto is “Do Touch!”
In all we had a wonderful, informative visit to Canberra.
