Primary Geography Alive: Diversity Across Asia (Lesson 1) Lesson 1: An introduction to Asian culture Content focus: In this lesson students are immersed in aspects of Asian culture. Students will examine a variety of images and objects from Asia and identify the country of origin of each item. Students will use a visible thinking activity to develop questions about Asia. Resources: Worksheet 1: An introduction to Asian culture Worksheet 2: Cultural treasure hunt Resources: Images and objects from a variety of Asian countries. Resource: Origami projects https://www.artforkidshub.com/origami/ Resource: Japanese Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp2oSuh1Hy0 Key inquiry questions: What do I know about Asia? How are Asian cultures similar and different? Outcomes: A student: uses a variety of audio and visual representations to identify aspects of Asian culture and countries of Asia develops an inquiry question about Asia. Lesson sequence: Step 1: Decorate the classroom using images, items from Asia, books, poetry, board games (for, example, Chinese checkers) and examples of origami (provide instructions so students can make origami). Play music from an Asian country. Step 2: Students move around room, and using Worksheet 1, identify the country of origin of as many objects as possible. Step 3: Working in pairs, students compare responses on the worksheet. Step 4: Teacher displays correct answers for students to annotate their worksheet. Step 5: Using Worksheet 2 students identify the country most typically associated with each of the items listed. They are permitted to use the internet to identify the origin of any item they are not sure about. Teacher goes through the list of correct answers. Step 6: Students complete a ‘gallery walk’ of the Post-its to view other student’s words, sentences and questions. Students identify five key questions about Asia. Step 7: Lesson review. Students complete a 3, 2, 1 exercise three words about Asia, two sentences and one question on a Post-it and display it on the classroom wall. © Geography Teachers Association NSW
