Dear Friends in New Directions, As many of you know, I

recently retired as Director of New Directions. Over the years, I have felt that this job was custom made for me. It is hard to imagine anything more fulfilling than doing what one loves every day. It has been said that “A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles.” During my thirty years at St. Dominic’s, I have traveled many miles, but the friends have made the journey worthwhile. My life has been enhanced by you and together we have built the largest senior adult program of its kind in the state – boasting a current membership of nearly 9,000.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for volunteering your time, offering your encouragement and for faithfully supporting the mission of New Directions and St. Dominic Hospital. As I begin a new chapter, you will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish to recognize Sister Josephine Therese, Barry Plunkett who hired me and former New Directions membership specialists, Charlotte Vayda and Dianne Guthrie.

Thank you all for your kindness, support, and of course, the laughter. Please know when I count my blessings, I count you twice.

Your friend always,Jean Clark

GIVE NOWSt. Dominic’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Services needs our

help to purchase two Game Ready® GRPro 2.1 Professional Active Compression and Cold Therapy Units.

I know you are asking yourself, “Why is rehab talking about a cooking spray?” In the rehab world, a PAM is a “physical agent modality.” Th ese are what I refer to as “the feel-good stuff .” A physical agent modality is equipment that uses various forms of energy to modulate pain, modify tissue healing, increase tissue extensibility, modify skin and scar tissue, and decrease edema or infl ammation. Th ey are used in preparation for or concurrently with purposeful and functional activities prescribed and rendered by your physical, speech or occupational therapist. Categories of physical agent modalities include superfi cial heat, deep heat, electrotherapy, cryotherapy, mechanical devices, and light therapy.

St. Dominic’s Outpatient Rehabilitation off ers most of the aforementioned modalities to our patients. One of our favorite methods of cryotherapy, in particular, is the Game Ready. It sounds like one of those devices my son uses to play

his electronic games but, I promise, it isn’t! Th e Game Ready is a device designed to bring active cold and compression to optimize treatment of all major body parts. It helps to safely reduce pain, swelling and muscle spasms by stimulating the fl ow of oxygenated blood to the injury and helping the body pump away the swelling. Game Ready is benefi cial for various conditions such as post-operative diagnoses, swelling (edema) of joints, tendinitis, and acute injuries. It is convenient, portable, and comes with easy-to-apply wraps to fi t multiple joints. Th e benefi ts last longer than typical applications of cold packs.

St. Dominic’s Outpatient Rehabilitation wants to thank the members of New Directions in supporting us in their eff orts to raise money for the purchase of additional Game Ready devices. If you would like to see how the Game Ready works, stop by and visit us on the second fl oor of Dominican Plaza any time!
