APRIL 10, 2016—THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
Our Parish Mission: Christ calls our parish family to be a
beacon of hope in a rapidly changing community.
SHARING FAITH WITH OUR CHILDREN
Our Family Faith FUNdamentals program provides religious education for pre-school through grade eight children from 9:40 through 10:50 every Sunday morning above the parish office.
We have three classes that meet to help our children enrich their Catholic faith. If you children are not yet registered or participating, please call the office immediately this week and sign
them up and then bring them to class next Sunday.
COMMUNITY BREAD BASKET Don’t forget non-perishable foods, soaps, paper products for distribution at our ecumenical food pantry. This month we are asked to bring macaroni & cheese.
Bring them to the offering baskets to be presented at mass.
TABLE OF HOPE Free Hot Meals are provided at First Methodist Church on West Street 5-6 pm Monday,
Wednesday & Friday. Everyone is welcome to come to share the meal and the fellowship. Our next parish day to serve will be April 22. Sign up sheet is in the back of the church.
St. Paul Faith FUNdamental children & teachers would like to thank all who contributed towards the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. The collection which was held in our church after all masses two weeks ago netted a total of $800.00 which was sent to Catholic Charities to benefit the water crisis.
The following is part of the Homily preached last week on Mercy Sunday by Pope
Francis:
The path that the Risen Master shows us is a one way street, it goes in only one direction: this means that we must move beyond ourselves to witness to the heal-
ing power of love that has conquered us. We see before us a humanity that is often wounded and fearful, a humanity that bears the scars of pain and uncertainty. Before the anguished cry for mercy and peace, we hear Jesus’ inspiring invitation: “As the Father has sent me, even so I
send you” (Jn 20:21).
In God’s mercy, all of our infirmities find healing. His mercy, in fact, does not keep a distance: it seeks to encounter all forms of poverty and to free this world of so many types of slavery. Mercy
desires to reach the wounds of all, to heal them. Being apostles of mercy means touching and soothing the wounds that today afflict the bodies and souls of many of our brothers and sisters. Curing these wounds, we profess Jesus, we make him present and alive; we allow others, who
touch his mercy with their own hands, to recognize him as “Lord and God” (Jn 20:28), as did the Apostle Thomas. This is the mission that he entrusts to us. So many people ask to be listened to
and to be understood. The Gospel of mercy, to be proclaimed and written in our daily lives, seeks people with patient and open hearts, “good Samaritans” who understand compassion and silence before the mystery of each brother and sister. The Gospel of mercy requires generous and joyful
servants, people who love freely without expecting anything in return.

This week: Third Sunday of Easter
Acts 5:27-32,40b-41 Revelation 5:11-14 John 21:1-19
Background: Some scholars of the Gospel of John believe Chapter 19 was added to the original text by a later editor or by the original author at a later time. The last verses of Chapter 18 clearly
seem to be an ending and the verses of Chapter 19 an afterthought. Why would these have been added? What important material for the church’s faith are contained here? There are many puzzlements in these verses: where are all the other apostles? Why is the setting suddenly back up in
Galilee when all the other resurrection appearance in John were in Jerusalem? Why 153 large fish?
Why does the writer wait to the very last minute for Jesus to symbolically forgive Simon Peter his triple denial of Jesus?
Next Week: Fourth Sunday of Easter
Acts 13:14,43-52 Revelation 7:5,14b-17 John 10:27-30
NEVER ALONE
The local support group for parents, family, friends and community interested in drug and alcohol addiction is now meeting here at St. Paul’s in our parish office conference room on Monday
evenings at 6:00. This wonderful group has been providing encouragement as well as education and support to those in our area struggling with issues related especially to the abuse of
substances. If you have these issues in your family or know someone who does, come on Mondays to find a welcoming group of folks, many of whom have been there and/or are there!
Preparation for First Eucharist will be held today and continue for all the Sundays of April in the school cafeteria. Today’s session will begin at 4:00 pm.
Adult Bible Study
Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the parish office conference room. Come discuss and learn about the
coming Sunday’s Gospel text.
“In the same instant you died and were born again; the saving water was both your tomb and your mother.
“Solomon’s phrase in another context is very opposite here. He spoke of a time to give birth and a time to die. For you, however, it was the reverse: a time to die, and a time to
be born, although in fact both events took place at the same time and your birth was simultaneous with your death.”
-Cyril of Jerusalem, 4th Century, to those newly baptized at Easter
