If we are successful (and I am sure we will be), that will make two new Clubs within one year, which would be a truly great achievement. Last November we chartered the new Taradale Lions Club, which gave our morale and our membership numbers a real boost and also, just as importantly, showed us that new Clubs are definitely feasible in 202M and that there are people out there who want to join us if we give them the chance. Clubs, unfortunately, don’t always last forever and we have to remember that, just as Clubs need to constantly look for new members to replace the inevitable losses as existing members reach the end the end of their Lions careers, so Districts need to allow for the fact that every now and then a Club is going to reach the end of its life. The great majority of our Clubs are focussed and vibrant organisations which are functioning well and doing a magnificent job upholding the ideals of Lions – but we have to acknowledge that here and there a Club may have reached the point where it has a limited lifespan ahead of it. We have lost a good many Clubs throughout what is now District 202M over the last two decades or more and it is high time we got serious about replacing them. There are too many areas which are not presently served by a Lions Club; there is a huge number of potential members are out there waiting for us to do something about providing an opportunity to join; and the need for the special brand of service provided by Lions will always be there. I want to congratulate Zone Chair Neil Tunnicliffe and his team in Zone 7 for being the next to take up the new Club challenge. I know that other Zones are also working hard on the prospect of setting up new Clubs and I know that there will be more to follow. As Zone Chair Phil Allport and his team found when they launched their efforts to set up the Taradale Club, starting a new Club is something of a leap of faith – but we need to believe in ourselves and give it a go. And finally . . . The person who gets farthest is generally the one who is willing to DO and DARE. Happy New Year!

Firstly may I wish everyone a happy and successful New Year. Our District has enjoyed a very successful first half of this Lions year and we can look forward to an equally successful and fulfilling second half.

Convention

Jill and I are now about to embark on the Convention season – we will be going to the all the District Conventions and we are looking forward to the experience of visiting all the other Districts and joining in the fun. Our own Convention, with its “Simply come Scottish” theme is growing closer and I urge all Lions and their partners to register now if you haven’t already done so. Accommodation might end up being in short supply, so book now and avoid disappointment. It will be a great occasion and so easy to dress the part – all you need is something tartan to wear to look the part. And there will be enough haggis for everyone!

Conventions are an unbeatable opportunity to meet old friends, make new friends, and enjoy yourself in the process. The more people attend, obviously, the more successful it will be. So don’t delay – register today!

A month already into the new year, hope you are staying safe in the summer heat. Hope you have made plans to register for District Convention as soon as possible to avail the early registration discount.

Please note, I will be going to the Philippines from mid February for 3 months as an aid volunteer on the rebuilding projects in Tacloban and other surrounding areas affected by super-typhoon Haiyan a few months ago. Please help me by donating to my cause to go towards funding part of my trip at: http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/helpinghaiyan Also check out my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/marksrebuild

In my absence, Chethna Naidu from Petone Lions will be managing the bulletins and convention booklet . She will also manage the 202M bulletin editor email address and no changes to postal delivery address.
