2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

2 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Round One - Falls Creek

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention

in the article with Ben McIlroy.Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday.During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt.com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!The weekend’s program sort of goes like this. Saturday: 9am to 16:00 is compulsory practice. 10am to 18:30 is rider registration and Info Tent open. 17:00 to 17:30 is rider briefing. From 18:00 on there is a social evening at Last Hoot Restaurant and Bar in Slalom Plaza.Sunday: 8am to 9am Rider Briefing and Timing activation. 8:30am to 1430pm Trails Open for GE competition.1500 to 1630 Presentations. If you’re into biking and would like to enjoy some good action, be at Falls Creek this weekend. Further detail from 03 5758 1200. •

LOCAL TALENT

4 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has

progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.MR: Is this your first overseas race?Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.MR: How did you get into riding?Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.MR: How many national events have you raced?Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

of the races he was doing.MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

TRADE FAIR @ FALLS CREEK Prepare for Winter

For a little while there, it was looking touch and go. Our previous venue, The Frying Pan Inn has been

undergoing a fabulous renovation – meaning it would not be ready for use until winter.

The concept of putting a 600 square metre Hoecker Marquee on the car-park is compromised because the area is being used as a staging area for the new Eagle Chairlift. And the cost of the Hoecker and the associated gear becomes prohibitive.

Fortunately the great folk at QT, manager Evan Marrinan and his team have come

to the party and have offered to stage the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek in their premises. Therefore, the Trade Fair will go ahead on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd May.

The advent of the internet has changed the way many people do their shopping - much of it impulse buying. Oh sure, it opens up the suppliers’ market – giving many more people a look at the product – but does it really benefit the consumer?

Now that topic could become a good long-winded dinner party discussion over another glass or two – and the real solution may still not be discovered – or learned!

Internet shopping is convenient (even to the point where it could be making us lazy) –but one should be really savvy to make it work for us – as opposed to making money for the stores.

Making a bigger purchase – like purchasing your stock for a busy winter season – requires a fair bit of planning and research. Sure, we can use the internet to research, but then we need to see, feel, touch, smell and/or taste the product. And if it is equipment we are buying it would probably be smart to enjoy a comprehensive demonstration.

Falls Creek has a well-deserved reputation as a ‘foodies’ mountain with quite a few

We may even get our reliable mate Neil Williams from Trentham Interiors back this year. Neil has been a stalwart of the Trade Fair for many years. Pic Elle @ Top Shots

TRADE FAIR @ FALLS CREEK excellent restaurants in the village and in the off-mountain town of Mount Beauty-Tawonga-Tawonga South. To continue to ‘grow’ this reputation, everything we do needs to be a little bit of an improvement an last year –because if we don’t improve, then the others are going past us!

This ranges from the quality of the staff and how we manage them to the range of products we have available and how well we present that product.

Then there is the presentation and cleanliness of the premises - from the entrance to the amenities. New guests are casting a discerning eye over everything as they cruise in – and if the joint doesn’t stack up, the rest of the visit is not going to be as easy.

And, of course price is a major consideration when buying stock, hardware, product or equipment. But, the old adage continues to ring true “You get what you pay for!” Buying quality product or produce ninety nine percent of the time means you will have less hassles and or hiccups – and as we all know, some of those hiccups come at the most inappropriate times.

The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek began as the Falls Creek Expo and Trade Fair back in 1982 with 15 exhibiting companies displaying their wares at the Frying Pan Inn. The next year saw 25 companies exhibit, the year after 27 companies, and the following year 35 companies attended – outgrowing the space the Frying Pan could provide. The Trade Fair then moved to Sundance, and then, in 1992, to a 1200 square metre Hoecker (marquee) on the Gully Car Park – housing, at its maximum, 110 exhibiting companies.

Campbells Wines; of the many varying stalls at the Falls Creek Trade Fair. Pics - Ken Bell.

In excess of 200 company reps and principals – all travelling to Falls Creek, purchasing accommodation for two or three days, bringing a huge range of product and generally servicing the snow industry in Victoria.

The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek takes place here in Falls Creek for your benefit. Your support would be appreciated. Dates are: Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd of May. Further enquiries to: Mb 0400 350 488. •

van der Ploeg (2013 XCE World Champion and also raised in Mount Beauty) who’s been at University for like forever but at the same time he’s been a professional mountain biker. So it’s possible.I like Physics so maybe something to do with engineering. I’d love to get involved with building new parts for bikes, making them faster and better. Developing ideas like Shimano’s new electronic gearing, which I’ve just got on my new bike.MR: It’s pretty obvious you like to keep involved with the mountain bike world. Do you feel any pressure from a biking perspective during your final year at school?Ben: There’s so many people helping me and pushing me into the pro mountain bike scene and it’s so easy to get sucked into it and think it’s going to continue to be easy for the rest of my life. I step back and think that it’ll be hard work, but with the right support I could do it. I think it’s important to still have to the love for mountain biking.MR: Do you think your love for the sport will change if you become a full on racer?Ben: Not really, As much as I enjoy the whole vibe of riding with my mates, hanging out and having a good time. I still really really enjoy the racing aspect of mountain biking, it determines who is the best and everyone wants to be the best at what they do.Racing has brought mountain biking to where it is today, bikes are lighter and faster and better than ever and racing has played a massive role in that.MR: Do you have any expectations racing your first EWS in New Zealand?

Ben: I have no idea. I don’t know if I’m going to come last or first or not finish. I hope there’s lots of riders, because in the Australian races there’s only like 20 athletes, but it’s the other side of the world for all the Europeans, so I don’t know if the junior riders will travel that far, but I’ll just wait and see.MR: Well have an awesome time; I’m sure it’ll be fun no matter what the result. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?Ben: Mum and Dad, Chris, Sam and everyone from Shimano. Results:In the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, Ben achieved a creditable 12th place out of

about 50 entrants in the U21’s after a bit of a rough day. After the trip to New Zealand, Ben then went on to compete at EWS Round Two at Derby, in North Eastern Tasmania. But this time, among the U21 competitors, it all came together for Ben and he finished on top of the podium - and is currently leading the U21 class after the first two rounds. With the next six rounds taking place all round the world, Ben is about to focus on year 12 and the Australian National Enduro Series. • Matt Rousu

A TIME TO REMEMBER ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes – and yet the respect

increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.

Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong – yet unspoken – feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed,

traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Prayers will be led by Alf Thistlethwaite of the Uniting Church and the Guest Speaker on the day will be Major Richard Keller, ADF, Bandiana.

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College – further reinforcing the appreciation of our diggers shown by the young folk in the community. Speakers will be school captains, Sophie Hodge and Ella Gould. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish.

Further details on the service from Mr Bob Williams, President, Mount Beauty RSL on 5754 1585, or 0427 784 499.

Following the service, everyone is invited to West Peak Hotel for a BBQ Lunch, refreshments and the traditional activities (read two-up), plus a couple of beers and a few old stories. •

At last year’s service, held in the Community Centre because of the wet weather, school captain Katerina Trnka spoke very well of the local community involvement in WW1 supported by a 1903 photo of kids from Tawonga

OUR COMMUNITYAnd Its People Bob Flower is the President of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty. I sat down with him in his house.

Hi Bob, what is Rotary? Rotary is an international organisation, started in Chicago a bit over 100 years ago. It’s a service club, and the idea is people give back to the community by doing things for their community or raising funds to run projects.

What does Rotary do? Our club has two main things that they do. One is they give a significant amount of their earnings to international projects such as stamping out polio - and that’s close to being eradicated now. Anywhere there’s inequity and suffering that leads to political instability, Rotarians with any insight will try and start up a project.

Our club has donated things called Aquaboxes and Shelterboxes to be used when there’s a cyclone in the Pacific Islands. There’s a warehouse in Sydney that’s ready to provide fresh water and shelter for Islanders. (Google Rotary Shelter Box or Aqua Box)

Our biggest area we work on is locally, and we’re concentrating on broadening horizons

for our teenagers as they go through secondary school. Kids growing up in this town get an excellent education locally, but this is so they can see what’s available wider.

Most of it has a career-focus. We pay the travel costs for instance for the Year 11 trip at the end of the year which sends students off for a few days to Melbourne, to look at universities and accommodation options, so they can get a picture of what’s on offer.

What did you do before Rotary? I was a teacher for my whole career. I studied science at Monash University, did eight years elsewhere before I came here. I started out in the Mallee, came here in ’82 and I taught here for 30-odd years at the Mount Beauty Secondary College, mostly physics and science and outdoor education and then I did five years at Tawonga Primary at the end of my career.

Outside of Rotary nowadays, what do you do? Well I’ve been keen on all sorts of things to do with the mountains, like mountain running and skiing. I was lucky enough to win a couple of Australian mountain running age-group championships and went off to Austria and did the world championships one time. I ski in the Hoppet each year - that keeps me going,

gives me an aim for the year.

What do you love about Beauty and the Valley? The four seasons are wonderful. Right now we’re looking out the window at all this Autumn colour. And this time of year, the scenery is great, the weather is great, you can catch a trout in the clearest water. There are small fish in the upper streams. I like walking the river and fishing the upper streams.

What’s changed since 1982? The town has changed a heap. It was a little old company town when I arrived. The best example is the foreshore by the lake, where there is a massive park now. None of that was there. Between the ambulance building and the lake was just grass two-feet tall. Now there are paths, bike paths, all sorts of facilities. And the town’s busier, of course, probably twice as busy as it was then.

What’s your favourite spot? The top of Mount Bogong is pretty special. But the top of Feathertop is also special because it’s the best peak. When you’re standing on top you actually know you’re on top. But the top of any mountain really. Spectacular. • Thanks to Struan Jones for this great interview.

EMERGENCY

8 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

WEST KIEWA OPEN SPACEYou Can Help

Ever since the UKVCA was formed, the cleaning up of the area opposite the Information Centre, under the large

power lines, has been on the project list. Many of our members remember this as a great family play area when the SEC were in control of the entire area, and would like to see it become that again. It has taken considerable time to identify which groups are responsible for the area and its care, but this has finally been resolved and we have had considerable support from AusNet services, who are responsible for the area under and surrounding the powerlines. At this time just a year ago, DELWP and NECMA became involved in the scheme and a considerable amount of time, effort and money went into clearing the river banks of invasive plant species, followed by work and plantings by the Green Army and Secondary College students.

Five community organisations signed onto the planned Committee of Management for the project for further cleaning up of the river frontage of the West Kiewa River upstream from the Kiewa Valley Highway bridge. Since then there have been many meetings with DELWP and NECMA into the mechanisms for progressing this project. Unfortunately, we are at a stalemate and are currently applying for a Conservation Licence to work on the river banks. However, we do need to see the project progress and to this end the UKV Lions Club, one of the signatories to the project, have agreed to sponsor a community working bee to clean up the grassed areas. This working bee is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd., 10am to 1pm to be followed by a BBQ lunch provided by the Lions Club.We would be highly delighted if you could help on this day.Our main tasks at this time are to clean up the open space along the roadside and

under the powerlines so that the mowing contractor has a clear run through and under the trees, and hopefully to remove some of the additional obstructions such as piles of cut tree residue.Participants would need to dress appropriately, especially with good protective footwear, and bring gloves and any gardening tools which would be suitable - loppers, secateurs, small chain saw, whipper snipper, brush cutter, trailer etc. and a water bottle. Parking will be in the carpark opposite the Information Centre and down the road signed ‘to the Gorge Walk’.On arrival, each person will need to register at the Lions Club table so that they are covered by their volunteer insurance. They will be assigned a specific area in which to work depending on the tools they have available and will work only with their own tools. If there are any further inquiries please direct them to Mary or Keith Pike, 5754 1668. •

ENQUIRIES

AGL NEWS To our Community

I’d like to give you an update on what we’ve been working on at AGL Renewables. Firstly, on the safety front, you have

probably noticed the upgraded booms and signage rolled out over the summer months. The Mount Beauty regulating pondage is a great recreational asset, but please always ensure you follow the safety signs to keep out of high-flow and other hazardous areas.

Our Local Community Investment Program pilot is progressing well, with a number of applications for funding received. Submissions for the program, which is designed to reinvest revenue earned from our power stations into community-based initiatives, projects and events, closed on 30

March. Stay tuned for announcements.

You may also be aware that last year we commenced a review of Bogong Village, its long-term options, and our ongoing role. In collaboration with a range of stakeholders, this review has so far established that the pathway forward for the Village is to position it under a singular ownership arrangement. In order for us to make this possible we need to acquire the individual subleases from the current owners. Direct communication has been undertaken with each holder of a sublease and we will continue to work through the review collaboratively. It’s important to note that we wish to ensure that accommodation over the winter peak is not impacted. The decision made regarding the acquisition process does not impact the

Bogong Outdoor Education Centre located at the Village.

There are a number of other activities in the pipeline and I look forward to giving you an update in the coming months.

As always, we are keen to hear from you too, so please feel free to get in touch. Our Community Relations Manager, Hannah Coffey, can be contacted on 0422 852 830 or by email at [email protected].

Best regards, Simon Kelley, Renewables Manager, AGL Energy •
