Thirty Three Years On

Proudly able to claim to be the event that started it all, the Audax Alpine Classic has had a change of name

for this year. Now with the involvement of Sports Media and Entertainment 360 P/L the event will no longer come under the Audax banner and will simply be known as the Alpine Classic 2018.

The original event, back in 1985 saw six cyclists tackle the gruelling 200km ride from Bright, over the Gap to Mount Beauty, up the hill to Falls Creek, back down through Mount Beauty, over the Gap again to Bright and then up to Buffalo and back. Not a bad little ride for a day.

And so it has grown and during the 2000’s entry numbers regularly ran at over 2000 entrants. Now, with the advent of many other rides, like our Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Ride (on this same weekend) the Alpine Classic is holding entry numbers at around 1600 riders.

Based in Howitt Park, the Alpine Classic also provides a fun family time, the Bonjour Bright, while the riders tackle the nine courses ranging from moderate to seriously challenging, all fabulously supported by a great team of volunteers. Bonjour Bright will keep families, support crews and riders entertained at the free festival held in Howitt Park. The French-themed festival will feature live music and entertainers, films, kid’s activities, food, wine and beer, and a great atmosphere for cyclists to begin

ALPINE CLASSIC 2018

and end their rides. (See program this edition).

All these riders on the roads may be a little inconvenient – but that is the reality of life. Once again, this is an example of the developing summer trade we are all seeking – and with it comes situations we must all learn to deal with.

As is indicated by notices elsewhere in this publication, there will be changed traffic conditions on the roads around Bright, Mount Beauty, Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo, Mount Hotham and Omeo over the weekend. Saturday is the big day, and

motorists should allow plenty of time to get to their destinations. Visitors to Falls Creek for the Dragon Boat Festival – also on Saturday 27th – are advised to allow plenty of time for the trip up the road.

Cycling in the area has proved to be a fabulous boon for the economy (worth millions of dollars), not only with events, but also with many, many hundreds of people coming to the area to ride and train and experience the pleasure of riding in the high country all through our summer period. For example, Estaban Chaves, Orica Scott team member, in Falls Creek training for three weeks. •

An early start is the secret to the 200km Alpine Classic when the air is clear and the scenery superb. Pic – Ken Bell

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has

progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.MR: Is this your first overseas race?Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.MR: How did you get into riding?Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.MR: How many national events have you raced?Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

of the races he was doing.MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

AUSTRALIA DAY It Means A Lot

Self-respect and personal pride go together and become the basis for living successfully. It is not about how

much money you have or whether you think you are better than someone else – because the truth is that we are all equal and money will not make anyone a better person.

And then there is the pride we exhibit as a nation. To my mind the greatest example of National Pride would be a perfectly functioning education system, a health system for all and no homelessness.

Like it or not, Australia has a National Flag and there are protocols relating to the flag and how it is handled.

1. Show respect and dignity for all Australian flags. The Australian National flag takes precedence in positioning over all other flags or ensigns. On Australian soil, the Australian National flag takes precedence over other national flags.

2. Fly the flag. The following must be observed when flying the Australian National flag: •Raise it no earlier than first light. •Lower it no later than dusk. •If you wish to fly the Australian National flag by night, it must be floodlit.

3. Raise the flag quickly and lower it ceremoniously. During the raising and lowering of the Australian National flag, everyone present must be silent and face the flag. This also applies to when the flag is carried in a parade. Those in uniform are obliged to salute the flag.

Another important point is that you should never let the National Flag touch the ground, the water, or the floor.

2017 Young Citizen of the year, Ebony Tanzen gets a congratulatory hug from proud dad Brent.

Pic – Kylie @ BigBrightPhotos.Com.Au

The Australian National Flag consists of: The Union Jack - this depicts Australia’s past links with Great Britain.

The Southern Cross - Five stars that emphasise the importance of navigation to Australia and the southerly location of Australia geographically. The Southern Cross constellation is only viewable from the southern hemisphere.

The Commonwealth Star - also known as the Star of Federation - this shows the unity of the six States and the combined Territories of this country.

There are many varied points of view – but the fact is, it is our flag and comes to us with a history – from a continent where flags were used for many centuries prior. We treat our flag with respect – the same as we treat each other with respect.

Australia Day is our National Day and locally, our Australia Day celebrations begin at around 7:45am in Hydro Park beside the swimming pool with the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions putting on an excellent breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, orange juice, tea and coffee – all for a gold coin donation.

Our fabulous Mount Beauty Community Band has become firmly entrenched as part of our celebrations – and will continue to do so this year. Also on hand will be free flag wavers, face painting and temporary tattoos for the kids.

The official part of the day begins at 9:30am with the presentation of Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards (Local Achiever of the Year – Kiewa Valley,

Local Young Achiever of the Year – Kiewa Valley and other deserving recipients. Local councilors will be on hand to make the presentations and the guest speaker on the day is to be advised. •

ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect

increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.Falls Creek ServiceJoin the Falls Creek locals at this unique location, Eagle Rock, for the Dawn Service 2017.Shuttle for ANZAC Dawn Service: 5:15am - 6:30am Meet at Slalom Day Car Park.

Mountain Biking is no longer for the elites only

MOUNTAIN BIKE PARKFALLSCREEK.COM.AU/MTB

Fantastic Events

Report by Matt Rousu. Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour (20-21 Jan) was held at the legendary

Big Hill Mountain Bike Park in Mount Beauty. The small town in the state’s North-East attracted close to 200 riders over a scorching hot summer weekend. Faced with iconic old-school single track, flat corners, steep chutes and freshly cut off-camber grass sections the racers would tackle five unique stages while a 6th super technical stage was reserved for the Elite categories only.

The entry list read more like a National event with some athletes travelling 1000km to attend. Two times National Champion Chris Panozzo, former World XCE

GRAVITY ENDURO SERIES

Champion Paul van der Ploeg and World Cup DH sensation Dean Lucas would do battle with other top athletes Jeremy Hamilton, Shannon Hewetson, Dave Ludenia, Ben McIlroy and the Panozzo brothers Liam and Joel. A wildcard was thrown into the mix with former champion Dan MacMunn making his return to the Enduro scene. The Elite Women category was spearheaded by Ebony Tanzen - she would compete with Rachel Hore and Danielle Garden.

Saturday was reserved for practice and each rider was allowed to shuttle only four times throughout the day. Many athletes rode up early to try and beat the forecasted 39-degree heat of the afternoon. It was a clever move to also understand how much liaison climbing would be involved on race

day. The shuttle road itself allows a full-size bus to ferry over 50 riders to the top at once so no-one had to wait long in line. Years of running national mountain bike events have the Mount Beauty crew and volunteers well organised and it showed with all the riders getting maximum time on the trails.

The overall vibe was relaxed and fun yet many of the riders were finding the tracks challenging and awkward. Every trail in Mount Beauty has been hand-built - it is renowned for its raw and natural approach, often going from fast and flowy to tight and rocky and with the temperature rising it became a frustrating puzzle for some. Go to www.pinkbike.com for a fabulous wrap and brilliant photos by Matt. For full results, go to www.livingitlive.com.au. •

van der Ploeg (2013 XCE World Champion and also raised in Mount Beauty) who’s been at University for like forever but at the same time he’s been a professional mountain biker. So it’s possible.I like Physics so maybe something to do with engineering. I’d love to get involved with building new parts for bikes, making them faster and better. Developing ideas like Shimano’s new electronic gearing, which I’ve just got on my new bike.MR: It’s pretty obvious you like to keep involved with the mountain bike world. Do you feel any pressure from a biking perspective during your final year at school?Ben: There’s so many people helping me and pushing me into the pro mountain bike scene and it’s so easy to get sucked into it and think it’s going to continue to be easy for the rest of my life. I step back and think that it’ll be hard work, but with the right support I could do it. I think it’s important to still have to the love for mountain biking.MR: Do you think your love for the sport will change if you become a full on racer?Ben: Not really, As much as I enjoy the whole vibe of riding with my mates, hanging out and having a good time. I still really really enjoy the racing aspect of mountain biking, it determines who is the best and everyone wants to be the best at what they do.Racing has brought mountain biking to where it is today, bikes are lighter and faster and better than ever and racing has played a massive role in that.MR: Do you have any expectations racing your first EWS in New Zealand?

Ben: I have no idea. I don’t know if I’m going to come last or first or not finish. I hope there’s lots of riders, because in the Australian races there’s only like 20 athletes, but it’s the other side of the world for all the Europeans, so I don’t know if the junior riders will travel that far, but I’ll just wait and see.MR: Well have an awesome time; I’m sure it’ll be fun no matter what the result. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?Ben: Mum and Dad, Chris, Sam and everyone from Shimano. Results:In the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, Ben achieved a creditable 12th place out of

about 50 entrants in the U21’s after a bit of a rough day. After the trip to New Zealand, Ben then went on to compete at EWS Round Two at Derby, in North Eastern Tasmania. But this time, among the U21 competitors, it all came together for Ben and he finished on top of the podium - and is currently leading the U21 class after the first two rounds. With the next six rounds taking place all round the world, Ben is about to focus on year 12 and the Australian National Enduro Series. • Matt Rousu

HEADINGRound Three Falls Creek will host the third round of the VIC Enduro Tour on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th February. The first and second tour were held at Nail Can Hill in Albury and Big Hill in Mount Beauty.

Last weekend’s second round on the Big Hill Mount Bike Park in Mount Beauty saw around 200 racers participate, and, despite the hot temperatures, with what has been quoted as some of the best Enduro racing seen in Australia. Locals Chris Panozzo and Ebony Tanzen took the Elite Men’s and Women’s winning titles.

A quote on Facebook from Joel Geyson says “Just wanted to pass on my thanks to the whole Mount Beauty GE organisation Crew. This was for me one of the best run events I have been too. Tracks very challenging but super fun. Great adjustment on the fly to have us start on different stages too. Plenty of water on track awesome work everyone.”

The Falls Creek multistage Enduro event will take part on the recently developed World Trail single track trails. This will

include the infamous Flowtown from the resort down to Howman’s Gap.

The riders will ride six stages, liaising between each one. Online registration is recommended.

Shuttles will be operating for practice only on Saturday 10 February with Blue Dirt at $60.00 per person. Bookings are essential at www.bluedirt.com.au to ensure the numbers of riders can be catered for.

“We are looking forward to hosting the round at Falls Creek.” Says Director of Marketing & Communications, Jo Prothero. “The event brings riders from the region and broader metro areas and they really showcase the trail development in the resort.” •

Nice and Cool!

The 2018 ‘Mile-High’, Falls Creek Regatta will take place on the Rocky Valley Dam over the Australia

Day long weekend. “This annual regatta is a Dragon Victoria members favourite, as it is one of the most scenic venues for competition and provides a social aspect to the event that brings all the paddlers together after the days racing” says Dragon Boat Victoria’s General Manager, Chris Schleusener. “With nine clubs from across Victoria and a local New South Wales Club participating, it should a great weekend for competing on Rocky Valley.”

A series of races will be held for a variety of categories over a 200m course, with crews completing the course in around 50 - 70 seconds. All clubs will be competing to

MILE HIGH DRAGON BOATS be crowned champions of the Mile-High Regatta. This will be the last opportunity for clubs to put crews through their paces prior to the Victorian Championships being held at the Gateway Lake precinct in Wodonga on the 17th & 18th February.

Photography WorkshopsThere is nothing more satisfying than taking complete control of your camera, finding its potential and understanding how to make full use of it. To achieve this, learning how to get off your Auto modes is a huge step in the right direction.

Join me on one of my photography workshops to really get an understanding of your camera and the potential you hold in your hands. During the weekend I will show you and help you to understand shutter speeds, aperture, shooting in manual mode, the affect different lenses have on your photos, fill flash, composition, how to correctly expose your photos as well as some of the editing and workflow techniques that I use.

WEST KIEWA OPEN SPACEYou Can Help

Ever since the UKVCA was formed, the cleaning up of the area opposite the Information Centre, under the large

power lines, has been on the project list. Many of our members remember this as a great family play area when the SEC were in control of the entire area, and would like to see it become that again. It has taken considerable time to identify which groups are responsible for the area and its care, but this has finally been resolved and we have had considerable support from AusNet services, who are responsible for the area under and surrounding the powerlines. At this time just a year ago, DELWP and NECMA became involved in the scheme and a considerable amount of time, effort and money went into clearing the river banks of invasive plant species, followed by work and plantings by the Green Army and Secondary College students.

Five community organisations signed onto the planned Committee of Management for the project for further cleaning up of the river frontage of the West Kiewa River upstream from the Kiewa Valley Highway bridge. Since then there have been many meetings with DELWP and NECMA into the mechanisms for progressing this project. Unfortunately, we are at a stalemate and are currently applying for a Conservation Licence to work on the river banks. However, we do need to see the project progress and to this end the UKV Lions Club, one of the signatories to the project, have agreed to sponsor a community working bee to clean up the grassed areas. This working bee is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd., 10am to 1pm to be followed by a BBQ lunch provided by the Lions Club.We would be highly delighted if you could help on this day.Our main tasks at this time are to clean up the open space along the roadside and

under the powerlines so that the mowing contractor has a clear run through and under the trees, and hopefully to remove some of the additional obstructions such as piles of cut tree residue.Participants would need to dress appropriately, especially with good protective footwear, and bring gloves and any gardening tools which would be suitable - loppers, secateurs, small chain saw, whipper snipper, brush cutter, trailer etc. and a water bottle. Parking will be in the carpark opposite the Information Centre and down the road signed ‘to the Gorge Walk’.On arrival, each person will need to register at the Lions Club table so that they are covered by their volunteer insurance. They will be assigned a specific area in which to work depending on the tools they have available and will work only with their own tools. If there are any further inquiries please direct them to Mary or Keith Pike, 5754 1668. •

ENQUIRIES

Athletes NightMilch has always been a hub for athletes and bike riders alike. This summer has been no exception and we were incredibly lucky to have a night with the star athletes Elzy Wellings and Esteban Chaves. The night was MC’d by former Olympian Craig Mottram.

Elzy Wellings is a formidable distance runner. She was open and honest about her injuries that have plagued her career, answering everyone’s questions with amazing grace.

Esteban Chaves, whom many have seen recently training on our roads is also regular at Milch and his winning smile and happy humbleness won many a fan.

Nearly 100 people squished into Milch to enjoy a very close and personal Q & A

session. Two training camps bought their athletes in for a chance to talk to their hero’s. Questions varied from what sort of food the athletes like to eat, how they recover from an event, how they treat themselves in good times and bad, and what material their favourite socks were.

Falls Creek is continuing to establish its high altitude training reputation and the village boasts some of the best athletes Australian athletics has to offer whilst they are in training for the Commonwealth Games. There is also a very distinct international flavour with countries like Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, Bulgaria also being represented. •

A Challenge
