The Port and Navigable Canals Division has an organization structure of amultidisciplinary nature, the various specializations of experts completingeach other and working together in an integrated manner. Therefore, the lastyears' progresses have required new approaches for the hydrauliccalculations as well as the development of new fields, like hydraulic andhydrologic modeling and riverbed morphology evolution modeling. All thesewere based on software that enable analysis of the flow regime under varioushypotheses, including the maximum flows under natural and improvedconditions, taking into account the hydrotechnical works provided for theimprovement of hydrographic basins.

    The main activities are:Ports, Fluvial and Maritime Works for works related to sea ports andcoastal engineering works on the Black Sea shore;Inland River Works - for works related to the Danube River and the Danubeports, the navigable channels and the inland rivers;

Hydraulic calculations and modeling - for studies, calculations, analysesand hydraulic modeling, including riverbed morphology evolution modelingNavigable Canals Works for works related to navigable canals such us

    Arges, etc.

The technical solutions adopted for foundation of certain hydrotechnicalstructures in the riverbeds largely included elements like drilled columns orKelly-type moulded walls, and the bottom sills have been provided with sheetpiling or moulded walls.

We have designed port landing facilities consisting of anchored sheet piling

walls (applied for the first time in Romania).

The elaboration of Natural Hazard Maps of the County territories is part of theeffort to meet the provisions of Law 350/2001 on territory organization andurban planning at regional, county and local level, and of the GovernmentDecision No. 447/2003 approving the detailed rules on the drafting andcontent of natural risk maps in the case of landslides and floods.

The identification, localization and delimitation of zones exposed to naturalhazards, earthquakes, landslides and floods have, as a final result, theelaboration of hazard maps for these zones, the definition of generatingconditions of these phenomena in the counties, as well as of establishing thetime schedule for the measures to be taken to prevent and diminish theireffects.

At the same time, the documentation of this type constitute interpretativestudies for the County Land Management Plans (CLMP) and for the GeneralUrban Plans (GUP) of the administrative territorial units in the county, with a

view to establish the specific measures for mitigation and prevention of thenatural hazards' effects, for execution of construction works and land use.

By knowing these areas and the risk categories implied by the construction ofsocial and economical objectives in the regions affected by natural riskphenomena, by the application of adequate measures, either structural ornon-structural, as well as by the promotion of specific works on certainsectors, the damages produced would be limited and any future investmentswould be protected.

The hazard and risk map is a basic modulus also integrated within the

MOSYM project proposed by the Ministry of Environment and SustainableDevelopment and the National Agency Apele Romne on the decision-making regarding the flood prevention on the Romanian territory, as outlinedbelow:

The MOSYM Project was conceived as an information system consisting oftwo branches. The first branch starts with the automation of the measuringsystem of the flood characteristics, continuing with the procedures of primaryprocessing and hydrological modeling of the data.

The second branch of the system is represented by the hazard and risk mapsaimed to help decision-makers to develop solutions for an optimalmanagement of the flood protection hydrotechnical works and for flood riskpreparedness and prevention in the zones pointed out on the risk maps.

Both branches converged towards the achievement of a useful toolfor decision support for flood management and damage mitigation withaccepted European standards.

This system is conceived to provide the decision-makers with complexdata bases, thoroughly structured and systematized, so that they couldmake the best decisions regarding the flood management process and therecommendation of the future flood protection works to be achieved.

The Environmental Protectio n is a key-factor in IPTANA's project approach. In this way, our Clients are assured that the technical solutions that we adoptcomply with the principle of sustained development and provideenvironmental impact mitigation measures in order to protect human healthand to prevent pollution.

We adopt execution technologies that allow material saving, which directlyinfluence the quantities of raw materials used for producing such materials. We also select the most adequate solutions for carrying out the road works soas to reduce as much as possible the agricultural or woodland surfacestemporarily occupied by the works, in order not to affect the right of futuregenerations to enjoy one of the country's major resources. The projectsconcerning the achievement of port investments, especially those involvingthe loading/unloading of oil products, cereals and other bulk materials, haveincluded solutions for preventing pollution of the navigable waterways andimplicitly for protection of the aquatic ecosystem.

We are a team of specialists in the fields of sanitary engineering, environmental engineering, hydroenergetics, shipbuilding, atmospherephysics, biology, geography, chemistry, biotechnical and ecological systemsengineering, able to elaborate specific documentation such as:

Carrying forward a long tradition of scientific research , we have elaborateda series of projects and studies that are included in the National Plan forResearch, Development and Innovation, and in the following internationalresearch and development programmes:

Consortium Operational Management Platform River InformationServices (COMPRIS)

COMPRIS consisted in the establishment of a reference River InformationService (RIS) that would be unanimously accepted bythe present users of the European inland waterways. The main objective wasto enhance the concept of River Informational Service. This includesmanagement services, such as: reducing the risks related to safety andenvironment in the inland waterways and the riparian lands, and maximizingthe efficiency of the water transportation operations. Concurrently, a similarproject was elaborated for the National System of Inland Navigation, financed

from the National Plan for Research / Development, through the CorintProgramme. The project focused on finding the solutions to harmonize theutilization of digital maps (ECDIS) and the vessel traffic managementservices (VTMS). Together, they are the main systems of the RiverInformation Service.Improving the maritime links between TRACECA and TEN-T (TRACECA TEN)The project refers to the technical and organizational facilities for promotingthe transportation on the Traceca corridor in the Black Sea region, as anextension of the European corridors belonging to the TENT-T network. Therewere elaborated market studies, feasibility studies, a transportation safetyand security management system, and the concept of port community wasdefined.
