Muskie Ink Page 1 www.capitalcitymuskiesinc.org Volume 35, Issue 9 September 2018 Prez Sez Well with all the rain recently, I am considering building an ark. In all seriousness, I am generally concerned about how much flooding may impact the fishery. I have never seen so much water in the streets, lakefront sandbagging, or remember the boat landings being completely closed on Madison lakes. I also saw a video of the water going over the Wingra Dam, scary how much water is running over the dam. I remember we had some flooding a few years back and how much this impacted the weeds, especially on the North end of Waubesa. It took several years for those weeds to grow back, so I am hoping there isn’t the washout seen previously. Another observation from the previous high water was how current runs through Monona and Waubesa. I was stunned at how the water clarity changed along the current breaks and the overall movement of water through the system. I love early fall fishing and hoping there won’t be any significant habitat destruction or fishing changes, but my fingers are crossed. The next club meeting will be at 7 p.m. September 10th at the 5100 club. I am looking forward to meeting a number of new members that have joined recently and hear about all the big fish caught this summer. Our speaker will be Doug Kloet who is a guide in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Finally, I want to extend an invite to attend two upcoming outings, the Pit-Tag challunge on September 22rd and Vilas County outing on October 12 and 13th. These outings offer an excellent chance to meet some of our members, catch some fish, and enjoy the sport. Please see our website for other upcoming events, meetings and sign up forms. As always, stay safe and “GO” make some memories. Winston Hopkins Joe Uselman releasing his 48.25” musky caught on the Madison Chain. September General Meeting The next general meeting is on September 10 at 7:00 PM. It will be at the 5100 club in McFarland, WI. Our guest speaker will be Doug Kloet who will be presenting on Fall Muskie Fishing. Join us for great food and muskie stories of the summer.

Release Report Todd Berge- Release Chairman / [email protected]

Hello fellow musky hunters! Despite the crazy amounts of rain we've had in August, it looks like many have had good trips to Canada and have even had a good month fishing around here. Especially impressive are the 50+ inch muskies taken right here in Madison this year. Hopefully this trend continues in coming years. As a reminder, please send all fish 45 inches and over to: [email protected]. I have received very few pictures this year despite the high number of fish over 45 inches. Good luck to everyone!

2018 Bill Wood Memorial Lake Winter Outing

The 35th Bill Wood Memorial/Lake Winter Outing was held on Saturday June 21st. The rules now allow fishing on any Sawyer County Lake. The weather cooperated with variable clouds and light winds. Eight anglers participated. Weed development was down and mosquito production was lighter than normal. On Saturday fishing started out pretty hot with several fish on but lost. The dinner and awards ceremony was held again this year at the Julies Trailside Inn. Steve Reinstra handled the Master of Ceremonies duties and participants shared several amusing stories. John Eversoll made a fantastic trophy bait that was awarded to James Mensendike a second-year participant from Elizabeth, IL. No cash prizes were awarded. Muskie troubadour Geoff Crandall performed several songs and a good time was had by all. The next Bill Wood Memorial Outing will be held on June 22, 2019. If anyone has requests, ideas/suggestions for this outing please contact Geoff Crandall at [email protected] (608-831-6020) or Sue/John Eversoll at [email protected].

Fifth Annual CCMI Pit-Tag Challenge Outing

The Capital City Muskies Inc Chapter is again hosting a "CCMI Pit-Tag Challenge" outing on Saturday September 22, 2018. This ONE day event’s purpose is to catch pit-tagged muskies in Lake Monona. The catch information will be used to further enhance the Leech lake vs Wisconsin strain fish study that has been ongoing since 2007. This outing is open to all fisherman including anglers from other muskie clubs. Membership in CCMI is not required. Come and join us for this important and fun activity.

Date: Saturday September 22nd

Place: Olbrich Park and Boat Launch Time: 7:00am - 3:00pm

Outing Rules • Must comply with all WDNR regulations

• Catch and release only and no transporting of fish

• Participants are to meet at Olbrich park (across Atwood Ave from the Olbrich Boat Launch) at 6:30am

to receive pit-tag scanner instructions.

• Casting, trolling and live bait are acceptable forms of fishing

• Lake Monona is the only eligible lake

• All muskies caught must be scanned for pit-tags to be prize eligible

• A witness or a photograph of the fish is required for all entries

• In case of a tie, the earliest muskie caught will be the tie breaker

• Winners may only win in one "length of fish" category

Participants must complete and submit a "release of liability" form if one has not been completed in 2018. The form is available on the CCMI website. The outing is by definition a WDNR tournament, therefore each boat in the outing must be marked by wrapping a single layer of blue "Painters Tape" around the cowling of their motors.

Lunch & Awards A cook out will be provided around 3:30 pm at the Olbrich park with awards and door prizes after lunch. Awards will be presented for largest, second largest, and third largest muskie caught by length in inches. Special prizes will be awarded to pit-tagged fish caught regardless of length.
