My work experience is one of my biggest achievements. I worked at a private mental health service and got the opportunity to work with qualified nurses and support workers in a real-life environment. The opportunity to get hands-on has taught me a great deal about the career I want to go into as well as teaching me a bit about myself.

At Prestons College, Ive been given so many opportunities from working in the restaurant daily, preparing food to entering and winning competitions and undertaking work placements at Claridges, Rick Steins and Northcote Manor. These are all opportunities that I dont think I would have got anywhere else

  • Prestons College is delighted to have been accepted to The Gazelle Group a group of 20 enterprising colleges whose aim is to provide an education that doesnt limit you to the classroom, but instead provides the opportunities to discover what it takes to work in a real life environment.

The Gazelle Colleges Group is a group of 20 further education colleges across the UK that give students the opportunity to learn in a work-focused environment, and gain commercial experience that will help you succeed in the workplace, or as an entrepreneur.

What is the Gazelle Colleges Group?

Gazelle Colleges are moving away from the traditional classroom learning environment towards an approach that puts you at the centre of your college career. You will have a number of opportunities to work in commercial environments, attend unique events and take part in enterprise competitions whilst studying for a qualification in your chosen subject.

What is different about a Gazelle College?

Many Gazelle Colleges run student-led companies, supported by the colleges and staffed by students. Its a great opportunity to experience a real workplace environment while assisted by the college. Some roles are voluntary, but wherever possible you will be paid for work you undertake. In certain cases you may be employed on a learning contract, similar to regular employment, but remaining within the college environment.

Are there employment opportunities? Will I get paid when I work?

Can I start my own business at my college?Yes absolutely! Being at a Gazelle College is an excellent place to start and nurture your business. Experts are on hand to offer advice on formulating a business plan, give guidance on sourcing funding and to give you the support you need along the way.

By coming to a Gazelle College, you will get the chance to learn skills that will help you either find a job after you graduate or even go on to start your own business. Above all, youll get the opportunity to work and develop business ideas in an environment that supports creative thinking and entrepreneurship.

How does it change my day-to-day life at college? It depends on your chosen course of study but the opportunities to make the most of your time at college will be much greater, especially when it comes to learning the work-relevant skills that will help you find and be successful in a job.

  • The skills that you develop and experiences you have while at a Gazelle College will give you a better chance of impressing employers at interview and when youre starting a new job.

How will this improve my chances of getting a job?

While at a Gazelle College, you will get the opportunity to meet employers, understand what theyre looking for in college graduates, and potentially spend time with entrepreneur mentors from the local business community.

By attending a Gazelle College you will be given the opportunity to develop skills that will help you create a successful future career for yourself. Even if you dont want to start your own business, a Gazelle College will help you develop the real skills needed to be successful in todays workplace so that you have more chance of not only getting a job, but also progressing in that job.

I just want to get my qualifications and go to University, how is a Gazelle College going to help me?

How will being on the Gazelle programme fit around my studies? The Gazelle programme is your studies! Any activities, events, projects that you undertake will be related to your course, putting what youre learning into practice and into context. Gazelle Colleges aim to give you real experiences not just realistic ones so that you are prepared for the real world of work.

Studying at a Gazelle college will give you access to unique opportunities which will add real credibility to your CV or your UCAS statement if you are planning to move on to Higher Education.

    Study Programmes

Study programmes have been introduced by the Government for all 16-18 year olds. This means that whatever you study youll have what you want when you finish. This could be an apprenticeship, university course or a career. On a study programme youll have a substantial qualification, meaningful work experience and GCSE maths and English at grade A*-C. Youll also get tutorials, enrichment activities and study sessions to help you along the way.

Youll find that all the tutors at Prestons College have industry experience and most of them continue to work in industry to keep their skills up-to-date. This means youll learn from someone who has been there and knows whats expected of you in the world of work. Plus, youll have access to our fantastic facilities related to your course giving you real-life experience.

    Vocational Courses

Vocational qualifications are great if you know the industry you want to work in as you will choose to study one subject area. Assessment is usually through coursework and assignments and will include practical activities alongside theory. On some courses you may be required to undertake a work placement and gain real hands on experience.

Choose a vocational qualification if You prefer to be assessed through

coursework, portfolio building and practical assessments.

You want to progress to Higher Education or within a specific profession.

You want to gain valuable work experience and skills in preparation for employment.

If you are unsure about any of your options you can speak to our Careers Guidance Team, who can provide you with information, advice and guidance on your options when leaving school. Why not attend one of our advice events to speak to the Team, take a look around our fantastic facilities and speak to tutors and students?

Vocational qualifications such as BTECs and NVQs are accepted by universities for a wide range of degree subjects and are nationally recognised. They are developed with employers so you get real skills that are in demand in industry.

College has helped me progress with my singing and acting, the tutors have helped too with one to ones.

    APPRENTICESHIPS

What are the benefits of studying an Apprenticeship?

By choosing an Apprenticeship you can gain the skills you need for your career. This can keep you ahead of the competition when applying for future roles as you will have real work experience alongside your qualifications. Your employer and Prestons College will support you throughout your programme of study. Your employer will be able to teach you industry skills and show you how to use what you have learnt in the classroom in practical situations. Prestons College will support your learning in the workplace and make sure your employment rights are protected. As an apprentice you will earn while you learn and with university fees increasing, this is a real alternative to the more traditional route. Most employers that take on apprentices support staff in pursuing further qualifications right up to degree level. Most universities also take real industry experience into account for entry requirements to degree programmes.

    Choose an Appreticeship if:

You want to gain recognised qualifications while working in the industry.

You wish to develop your work based skills earning a weekly wage with all the benefits of a full-time employee.

You are looking for career progression within a company or you wish to continue your studies in Higher Education.

Prestons College has established relationships with a number of local employers. By becoming an Apprentice you gain real life experience in the work place while studying for nationally recognised qualifications.

The qualifications you will study depend on the industry you want to work in. As an overview, all Apprenticeships include the following elements: An appropriate Qualification Credit

Framework (QCF) qualification at either Level 2 or Level 3.

Functional Skills qualifications including Maths, English and ICT.

A Technical Certificate relevant to the Apprenticeship.

Further qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation.

Apprenticeships are becoming increasingly popular because youll work with a local company. That means you can earn while you learn, which helps reduce the cost of studying. Weve got great relationships with a wide range of local employers.

There are many employers who are looking for people to join their business and want them to receive further training to help improve and develop their skills and abilities. We will check that your employer pays you a fair wage in accordance with the National Minimum Wage guidelines, and that they provide a safe working environment, including appropriate working hours and the provision of day release.

How do I know if an Apprenticeship is the right choice for me?

If you would like to enter work after leaving school, then an Apprenticeship is a great way to do this. An Apprenticeship is a route that many young people choose rather than follow the traditional academic or university route. If you are not sure whether an Apprenticeship is right for you speak to a member of the Careers Guidance Team who can give you impartial information, advice and guidance about your options after leaving school.

Details of our Apprenticeships start on Page 42

    A-LEVELS

    AQA Baccalaureate

The AQA Baccalaureate is an extra qualification that gives you a unique opportunity to significantly improve your learning, education and employment prospects. The AQA Baccalaureate is an academic qualification which builds on your core A-Level subjects, adding significant value through wider learning, independent study and utilising the excellent enrichment opportunities available through Prestons College. Employers and Higher Education centres are increasingly seeking students who can demonstrate that they are resourceful, imaginative and able to use their initiative both independently and with others, and this qualification will help you do that as it recognises your all round achievements.

    Choose A-Levels if:

You prefer to be assessed through examinations

You want to study a range of subjects

You want to develop your independent study skills in preparation for Higher Education

You are interested in more academic based, rather than work and skills based education

If you know the career you want you may find that a range of subjects are required for entry to Higher Education programmes. A-Levels are usually assessed by exams; however some subjects also require coursework. You may choose to study four subjects over a two year period. Year on year our students achieve outstanding A-Level results and progress to top universities in the country.

As an A-Level student you will be at the centre of college life and have a say in what matters to you both inside and outside the classroom.

A-Levels are accepted by universities and are a nationally recognised qualification. A-Levels offer the flexibility to study a range of different topics, if you are unsure about which subject you want to study. A-Levels are an academic method of study that offer the flexibility of studying up to four different subjects.

Alongside your studies there are many other exciting opportunities available, which makes being a Prestons College student a truly rewarding experience. You may wish to join our sports teams, stand for President of the Students Union, visit art galleries in Paris, or fundraise for charity.

We pride ourselves on offering an exceptional experience to all our students, who welcome the change from a high school environment to a learning atmosphere where they are treated like adults.

    What makes us different?

You will be taught by experienced and enthusiastic tutors and have access to fantastic facilities and out-of-classroom support. Studying A-Levels at Prestons College is a unique experience. You will be able to enjoy the atmosphere and facilities of our modern college, while benefiting from the experience of studying at a university style campus.

Prestons College has helped me by giving me additional support and mentoring. I have used study coaches to develop presentations and construct assignments.
