« Nowadays, when

everything is transient,

when perenniality is

measured in hours,

when all is perishable

and disposable, when

even wars are like

lightning, I try to fix, by

what some might call

graffiti, words or

slogans, images,

feelings and my

perception of all that

surrounds me ”. Yann Sciberras

A 100%

ELECTRON

urban

Influenced by the free

figuration and bad

painting movements, Yann

Sciberras’ work is cutting,

offbeat and definitely

urban.

He matches forms, words

, “in English”. These

paintings tell a story, a

truth through slogans and

poetry.

Yann sciberras’ work comes from punk and rock culture and

demonstrates spontaneity, vehemence ,

keeping in mind at the same time, a sense of

humour and self derision.

Ecological, political, social claims, kicking the

termite colony that is consumes society, his

art is a torrent of signs, images, words,

warnings without giving lesson but as a

witness of today’s world.

He opens himself to the world thanks to

drawings, to rather bright colours, words

used as slogans, but also as a kind of urban

poetry, he uses his painting as a real tool of

communication.

Doodles on canvas, instinctive painting

influenced by the free figuration and the bad

painting movements, Yann Sciberras’ work is

cutting, offbeat and definitely urban.

THESE

PAINTINGS Are often large letting him free himself and better

develop in all ways his thoughts.

Meeting creations of this 21st century electron, is

like diving 20 000 miles under seas and

submersing in the magma of a subtle and real

territory.

His aim is not to lecture people, but just be an

“artistic” witness of present civilization in which

we are all actors.

We could call Yann Sciberras a director of

colours, shapes, eccentric characters that he is

transforming into real heroes of our times.

He pays homage in his way to todays world, with

an intimate perception of all around him :

ecological demands, social protests, political

enigmas…

Jubilitation, good mood, and selfmockery but

cynism too are the artist’s and particularly the

man’s signatures.

THE PUNK

ATTITUDE There is often

confusion when it is

said : “I’m a punk…”

Yann Sciberras is

not a “rebel coming

from the street”, as

he stresses it, but

just a punk from an

ordinary family.

PUNK

WHAT IS IT ? Claiming free creation, the punk movement was

born in the early sixties in the States with groups

such as the Sonics, the Seeds, 13th floor Elevators

and other groups from Detroit, The Stooges and

MC5.

But it was mainly during the seventies that the punk

philosophy began to find a receptive audience

amongst young people.

THEIR WISH : To turn upside down

the order of things. Rebel and cultural identity

Movement : imposing some artistic, musical and

cultural values which would give birth to NEW

WAVE. Essentially revolving around creativity

and authenticity, punk style explores the

territories of graphism, fashion and writing

SLOGANS : “Punk ‘s not dead” and its

antithesis antipunkonformist “Punk is dead”,

“Do it yourself”.

PHILOSOPHY : Everyone has to

build his own values “(…) As a painter, I would

define myself as a punk, not in the meaning of

“no future” or “destroy”, but because I want to

move, ask myself the right questions .

Change people minds, their points of view, their

analysis of the world.

Try to make people understand not to be sheep,

try to be objective, to reflect about the world.

Nowadays, we do not think anymore, we live in

the laziness of mind (…)”

…or untouchable, reserved for an elite, for the experts… On the

contrary, Art is aimed at everyone, young people, adults, every

socioprofessional groups, because the same worries, concerns,

obsessions, fantasies, fears… are what brings together those

millions of individuals.

Art is not necessarily in a museum, or in a galery, but it is here,

at every moment.

A moment of discovery, of pleasure, of relaxation and intimacy

while between the painter and the travellers.

HE DEMONSTRATES

THAT ART IS NOT AN

ELUSIVE WORLD
