FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 16, 2010 Unemployment Rate Increase in Citrus, Levy and Marion Counties Todays release of unemployment data for Citrus, Levy and Marion Counties from the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) indicated an increase in unemployment rates in the three counties, region, with the state and nation decreasing for June 2010. Workforce Connections Region, including Citrus, Levy and Marion Counties, posted a 13.9 percent unemployment rate, up .3 percent from last month. The State of Floridas rate inched down from .3 percent to 11.4 percent in June 2010. The nations current unemployment rate is 9.5 percent for June 2010, edging down from .2 percent from May 2010. Marion County posted a 13.9 percent unemployment rate for June 2010, a in/decrease of .3 percent from May 2010. The Ocala Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is currently ranked third highest in Florida for unemployment, up from fourth ranking the previous month. The Ocala metro areas June 2010 nonagricultural employment decreased by 2,900 jobs or .3.1 percent from the previous year. Citrus County followed with a rate of 13.3 percent, an increase of .6 percent from the previous month. Levy County posted 13.1 percent, an increase of .7 percent from June 2010. Rusty Skinner, Workforce Connection Chief Executive Officer, stated, The loss of governmental jobs shrinkage by 1,618 job, 618 for census, hard to determine the number that are loss. Im puzzled by the jump back up, pos shift of census worker and other governmental jobs. There is not enough information at this point, not to determine. Everyone should be comforted that we are parting economic, Ocala/Marion County Economic Develop Corporation, the Ocala/Marion County Chamber of Commerce to bring businesses to area and expand local businesses. When you have swing of more than 400 workers in one month in Marion County, that is going to throw things off. It is tough right now. Job candidates need to come into

  • the Workforce center each week. If they become discourage and not looking, they become their worst enemies, said Skinner. The number of individuals without jobs in Marion County increased from 18,261 to 18,659 from May to June. The number of unemployed individuals increased from 7,251 to 7,540 in Citrus County and from 2,049 to 2,158 in Levy County.
