As a former School Board Chairman and U.S. Education Department official, Gary Jones was instrumental in the selection committee for the previous Fairfax County Public Schools’ Superintendent Daniel A. Domenech. The selection process was widely noted for its degree of public engagement.
Noting Dr. Dale’s pre-announced retirement plans for June, 2013, Schultz commented “The standard set by Gary Jones and his peers in a Superintendent search is something I believe the next School Board should emulate.” “Dr. Dale certainly will not want to be a ‘lame duck’ Superintendent in our school system for the next 18 months,” said Schultz, “thus it will be incumbent upon the next School Board to know that time is of the essence in undertaking a search and ensuring the community is involved and heard to the greatest extent practicable.” With significant endorsements for her candidacy, including Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, the teachers and discipline policy reform advocates, Schultz said of this important nod from the highly-regarded Jones, “I am very honored by Gary Jones’ endorsement. He is pillar of both knowledge and dedication in educating and improving the lives of children. I am profoundly grateful for the confidence and support of Mr. Jones for my Fairfax County School Board candidacy.” On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, Fairfax County residents will elect the 12 members of the School Board. Registered voters are able to vote for one magisterial district candidate and three at-large candidates.
