What makes the Jura Mountains such a charming place is that it is not just for winter sports enthusiasts. For history buffs, the Jura Mountains provide a rich and diverse heritage. The whole area is certainly overflowing with unmissable sites:
HISTORY WITH MORE THAN JUST A PINCH OF SALT.It is fascinating to discover the history of salt, stretching back 1,200 years, in emblematic locations like the Saline Royale in Arc et Senans and the Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains, (listed by UNESCO), or by travelling along the unusual smugglers’ route…
CULTIVATING AN INTEREST IN PASTEUR.Here, the famous scientist Pasteur is at home, whether it is at his house in Arbois, his riverfront abode that has maintained its XIX Century ambiance, or at Dole on the 1st floor of his family’s tannery. At these two authentic sites, the visitor is taken back into the history of this exciting scientific revolution.
FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BUILDER-MONKS. The history of the abbey of Baume-les-Messieurs, which was part of the Cluniac Order whilst retaining the independence of its mother abbey, is enchanting, as is the story behind the Collegiate Church of Dole, or even that of Saint-Claude Cathedral.
MUSEUMS THAT PROVIDE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE AREA.It is an edifying experience to learn about the area thanks to its museums of savoir-faire, such as the Glasses Museum in Morez where you can discover how the Haut-Jurassien people developed their genius and savoir-faire to create an industry that is reputed across the globe for its quality and creativity. There is also the Toy Museum at Moirans-enMontagne where you learn that playthings have been a serious business since the Middle Ages! At the Woodcraft Museum in Bois-d’Amont woodcraft artisans are honoured, people who made the most of all the qualities of the spruce tree, transforming its wood into a range of products (boxes, skis, caskets…). And don’t forget the Musée Courbet at Ornans, based in the house where this impressionist artist was born.

A well-preserved natural environment, the Jura Mountains are located away from the main tourist spots. This French destination for all seasons that lies off the beaten track simply must be explored. Accessible by air, by road and by rail, this natural boundary between France and Switzerland is brimming with wide open spaces, but it is also a region that is rich in « stories » of all types.

Further south, in the Bugey, the Jujurieux factory is one of the largest silk companies in France and was created by the Bonnet fashion house in 1835. This XIX and XX Century industrial heritage can be explored thanks to an entertaining and interesting visit.
Just as surprising is the Espace des Mondes Polaires Paul-Emile Victor in Prémanon that retraces French polar adventures with an experience that immerses the visitor totally in the polar world. As for the Maison de La vache qui rit® in Lons-le-Saunier, this welcomes visitors to the very place where the first ever portions of this most famous cheese were produced.
To the south, in the Bugey, the Château des Allymes and its military architecture bear witness to the defence of this region in the Middle Ages. There is also the Fort L’Ecluse, a fortified building nestling among the steep cliffs and reconstructed in the XIX Century, with impressive underground cellars, blockhouses and artillery embrasures.
It is important to remember the Château de Joux, a veritable synthesis of 1000 years of history, changing hands between the north and south, which served as a State prison and was home to prisoner Toussaint Laventure, one of the first abolitionists.
