The latest incarnation of work by Perth artist, AndrewHayim De Vries, has designs on Melbourne’s detritus.
Hayim De Vries, known for his 100 Hubble and Hubble in
a Bubble works, has recently moved to the Victoriancapital, where he is shedding light on our collectiveneglect with his up-cycled lamp art.
Lighting Conditions Do Apply is a series of designerlights that juxtapose and combine an eclectic range
of found objects: from Sunbeam Mixmasters and bed-pans to speed bumps and mannequin arms.
The series is the latest instalment of his Home Wheresbody of work. It also continues a central narrative ofhis art: the resurrection of lost and discarded ob-jects deemed valueless by society.
“I see my practice as ‘art objects in the light’,which are steeped in a strong 19th century sen-sibility that uses cross-cycling to merge indus-trial and kitsch with urban constructions,” saysHayim De Vries.
“These objects exist as a sculpture during theday where they have their own sense of valueand existence, and at night they take on a sec-ondary life force as a light,” he says.

The genesis of this lighting series was 100 Hubble,a Fremantle weatherboard house that HayimDe Vries transformed into a moveable feastof art.
Over 20 years, the artist created a con-
stantly changing palette of pavilionsmade from found objects: a telephonebox as a shower; a railway carriage asa suite of rooms; a boat prow keepingwatch over it all.
On the property’s front wall, shelf aftershelf of found objects also made hishouse a destination for tourists, media
and art critics alike.
His subsequent exhibitions – Hubble in a
Bubble; Table Where: Form Function; andBubble into the Continuum – were drawnfrom the Hubble Street residence and a sec-ond house, Garage Mahal Home. “Andrew has persistently recycled materials inhis artworks – he built two unique houses as
art works, which act as a most grand gesture tothis practice – juxtaposing and combining foundobjects to make whimsical and quirky reconstructedartworks”, says Dr Julian Goddard, Head of the Schoolof Design and Art, Curtin University.
“His recent lighting works share his idiosyncratic aes-thetic born out of years of making art with a trulystrong ecological and environmental knowledge base,
which are also delightfully functional.”
