Young Julien Barrot’s three cuvees of bottled 2009s showed better this year than they did last

year – always a fabulous sign. I tend to underrate these wines initially, only to add points af-

ter they spend time in the bottle. Barrot is one of the young turks that appears to no longer

be “up and coming,” but has arrived. This 30-acre estate is spread throughout the appella-

tion, and in most vintages, three cuvees are produced – Terroir, Signature and Pure, the limi-

ted production, remarkable, 100% Grenache cuvee made from century old vines planted in

pure sandy soil from the lieu-dit known as Grand Pierre. The Terroir and Pure are aged in fou-

dre and the Signature in foudre and steel tank. 2010 appears to be another great vintage for

proprietor Julien Barrot.

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Pure

Rating : 96-99 Drink : 2011—2036 While it is less sexy and open than the 2009, there is even more to the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure. One of the greatest wines of the vintage, it possesses a very singular style with oodles of raspberry and kirsch liqueur notes intermixed with licorice and spring flowers. Opu-lent as well as reserved and well-delineated, this massively endowed yet light on its feet Grenache must have alcohol levels pushing 16%. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. It is an incredible example of Provencal viticulture and the greatness of this sun-drenched, wind-swept appellation in southern France. (Not yet released)

The brilliant Julien Barrot has decided to produce only two cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape

from the family’s nearly 32 acres of vineyards.

It is amazing what Julien has accomplished since he began working at Domaine La Barroche.

The first great vintage produced by Barrot was 2005, and he has continued with a remarkable

succession of riveting wines.

One of the world’s greatest red wines is his 300 or so cases of Pure that come from a lieu-dit

called Grand Pierre next to the famed Chateau Rayas. The Pure is 100% Grenache from 105-year-old vines. The cuvee called Signature includes an intriguing component of less than 10% 70-year-old

Cinsault, which gives the wine an extraordinary fragrance as well as a delicacy that can be

missing in these southern Rhone wines.

Rating : 92 Drink : 2012—2027 A sensational effort, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits jammy black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, camphor, incense and hits of truffles as well as pepper. With velvety tannins, abundant glycerin, a nicely delineated mouthfeel, a sumptuous texture and a long finish, this 2010 should drink well for 12-15+ years.

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Pure

Rating : 99 Drink : 2011—2036 The monumental 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a candidate for perfection after several more years of bottle age. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple color with extraordinary “purity,” along with notes of spring flowers, luxurious levels of black raspberry and kirsch liqueur, licorice and mulberries. Layers of flavor hit the palate with exceptional freshness and definition as well as teeth-rattling intensity and power. This extraordinary tour de force is one of the greatest wines made in the world today. It should evolve easily for 15-20+ years. I have no idea what the alcohol levels are in these cuvees, but I’m sure they are pushing 16% or more. This is a legendary wine!

Josh Raynods for Stephan Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar January 2012 Julien Barrot has scaled back the number of wines in his portfolio "to focus on quality over

variety," so there is no longer a Fiancee bottling. "But who knows what will happen down the

road, if the personality of the vintage and fruit suggests it's a good idea," he added. Barrot

described 2010 as "a vintage that the growers loved because everything fell into place and

there were no problems with the weather, or anything else, except for the low yields." Two

thousand ten, he went on, was "a great, great year for mourvedre because it got completely

ripe but stayed fresh, so there's excellent backbone to wines that have a lot of it." Two thou-

sand nine, on the other hand, "was a year where you had to walk a line between too much

ripeness and just enough. It wasn't '07 style but compared to 2010 it took a lot more work to

make sure that the grapes didn't get too ripe."

(66% grenache, 13% mourvedre, 11% syrah, 6% cinsault and the rest "all of the others"; all of the vines average more than 70 years of age, according to Barrot): Vivid purple. Vibrant black raspberry and cherry aromas, with high-pitched floral and spice notes adding complexity. Intense flavors of fresh cherry, raspberry liqueur and candied lavender show a strong floral quality on the back end. Finis-hes energetic and light on its feet, with a deeper blackberry note and outstanding persistence.

(97% grenache and the rest "most of the others",

from a single plot of vines that were planted over a hundred years ago, according to Barrot): Bright violet color.Heady, complex scents of candied red and dark berries, Indian spices, potpourri and lico-rice, with slowmounting smokiness. Deep, sappy, palate-staining raspberry and mulberry flavors show superb clarity, intensity and focus, with no rough edges. Closes sappy, sweet and extremely long, leaving floral and spice notes behind. This wine clocks in at a heady 16.7% alcohol and the residual sugar is a very low 0.6 g/l, which is a number that you'd encounter with pinot noir.

Josh Raynods for Stephan Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar January 2013 Julien Barrot is now focusing on making two wines, Signature and Pure, with the option to make a Terroir bottling in weaker vintages, like 2008. Barrot is pleased with what he was able to accomplish in 2011, which he describes as a vinta-ge "that is definitely about the grower and how much work they did in the vineyard."

This was a remarkable day of fine food, prepared by Veritas’s chef, Sam Hazen, who was assis-ted by his sou chefs, Solange Johnson and Chris Meenan, as well as terrific wine service from sommeliers Reuben Rimiro, Alexandria Cubbage and Tristan Prat-Vincent. The theme was a comparison of 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape with the 2009s... The food was sensational… As for the wines, the 2009s are charming, rich and concentrated, but on a relatively fast evolutionary track. The blockbuster 2010s are more concentrated and denser, with slightly more tannin as well as more restrained, backward personalities. The 2009s should be consumed over the next 10-15 years whereas most of the 2010s need another 3-4 years of bottle age. 2010 should prove to be one of the longest-lived Châteauneuf du Pape vintages in the last thirty years. … The second flight combined the extraordinary old vine Grenache cuvée grown in pure sand, Barroche’s Châteauneuf du Pape Pure… the 2010 Barroche Pure , which is on a faster evolutio-nary track. It needs 3-4 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades. The deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 Barroche Pure offered wonderful raspberry, blueberry. While not as dense or po-werful as the 2010, it is still a beauty. The only wine in this flight that was close to full maturity was the 2009 Barroche Pure.

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Signature Rating : 93 Drink : Best from 2014 through 2026 This isn’t shy about its fruit, with very enticing plum, boysenberry and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors forming the core. There’s ample anise and licorice snap notes, with a latent graphite spine providing an adequate grounding. A modern style. Deliciously rendered.

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Pure Rating : 97 Drink : Best from 2015 through 2030 This provides a very flamboyant display of raspberry preserves, cherry sauce and fig pâte de fruit notes, with remarkable depth and a gorgeously creamy mouthfeel. In the background flitter notes of pastis, apple wood and licorice snap, giving the fruit a sounding board to continue through the remarkably long finish. Though it may ultimately be burning the can-dle at both ends, this is a really gorgeous ex-ample of the style.
