The FIMU celebrates all music11th, 12th and 13th of June 2011 in Belfort, France

During the Pentecote’s weekend, the FIMU, Festival International de Musique Uni-versitaire (or International Festival of Universities’ Music) of Belfort, brings 3 days of completely free concerts, in the heart of the old city.

Classical, contemporary and new music, as well as jazz, rock, and world music will succeed to each other, for every one’s pleasure, with more and more people coming every year.Eclectic, multicultural and free, the Festival International de Musique Universitaire is organised by the Town of Belfort, in collaboration with the students of the University of Technology of Belfort-Montbe-liard, and the students’ federation COM’ET.It attracts every year more than 130 musical formations, coming from 35 countries, more than 3000 musicians and roughly 80 000 spectators (in 2010).

The FIMU’s spiritThe free concerts, the diversity of musical styles, the student’s dimension, and the communication through the music, make the FIMU a unique event in France .From classical music to hip-hop, from rock to world music via jazz and new music… The variety of musical styles from the program speaks about the multicultural spirit of the festival, and put the 3 days under friendliness and cultural exchanges.

The Birth of the FestivalThe FIMU, Festival International de Musique Universitaire or International Festival of Universities’ Music, was crea-ted in 1986. From the start, it has been done by and for the students from the UTBM (Universite Technologique de Belfort / Montbeliard or University of Technology of Belfort and Montbeliard), in the same purpose: playing music. Very quickly, a non-student public also came to the event, wandering around the stages and the streets.

A strong students’ implicationToday, the FIMU is so popular thanks to the students, strongly involved in the organisation. The student federation COM’ET and the UTBM bring more than 300 volunteers, for jobs with responsibilities, like groups’ pilots, tech-

nical jobs or welcoming the public, which make possible all the organisation, high quality performances and the overall enthusiasm during the festival.

The way of participationThe festival is opened to all musical groups, French or not, mainly formed by students, musical schools or amateurs’ formations.The candidates have to apply to the festival, whose comities will select the chosen formations. They will come on a voluntary basis, when the festival will pay for their food and accommodations.


WhAT IS ThE FIMU ?

A woodwind instrument, the bassoon appeared in the late 18th century, in Italy, where it was called “fagotto”. From the oboe’s family, the bassoon is formed from a long pipe often made of maple, of around 3

meters folded upon itself, which the musician holds diagonally in front of him, the end at the top. The Bassoon is typically used to play music written in the bass and tenor registers, and

occasionally higher.

Two conferences will be completely dedicated to this instrument :

• Origins, history and repertoire of the Bassoon. Presented by Jean-Chantal Hoebeke, Director of Instrumental Ensemble of Belfort,• The reed throughout the ages : from the weaving loom to the sheer’s instrument. Presented by Jean-Marie Heinrich, researcher at the Pierre et Marie Curie’s University of Paris.

The woodwind instrument-maker Rieger will present, through an exhibition, tools and machines used for manufacturing reeds, and also a series of bassoons.

Focus on the present bassoonists in 2011

Bassoons will, of course, be presented in several classical orchestras playing at the FIMU. However, three formations will be particularly dedicated to it :• a bassoon’s quartet from Paris (Superior National Academy of Music and Dance)• a bassoon’s ensemble from Belfort, (small formation from the Departmental Academy)• a bassoon’s ensemble from Belfort, (big formation from the Departmental Academy)

As we celebrate this year the 25th anniversary of the Festival, let’s come back on its evolution, which has seen the town of Belfort innovating to improve the event for musicians and the public.The first edition took place on the 21st of June 1987, with 12 bands and around 400 musicians. It lasted just one day, was played on 6 stages, and welcomed French, Swiss and German formations. The following year, the number of musicians and groups doubled, on 2 days.Since 1994, the Festival has been taking place on 3 days. The musical styles diversified. Although at the beginning the program was mainly made of classical music, jazz and rock then appeared. The town of Belfort also wished to involve its population who proposed to accom-modate invited musicians.

We also highlight every year an instrument (with special conferences and concerts,…), and have implement so different musical styles. With all its history, the FIMU will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a retrospective of the 25 displays.

Visuals so FIMUIn 1994, the FIMU’s visual’s maker is Alexandre Wimmer. His three musicians’ characters are sculpted and photographed. This way of making has since become a strong element of the Festival’s identity.

2011 : ThE nEW EDITIon

The Big Blue EveningThe FIMU organises this year the Big Blue Evening. It will take place on

Sunday the 12th of June, with 15 minutes’ concerts of groups coming from different countries of the Mediterranean area. This will last from 10pm to midnight,

at the Kiosque, in the heart of the Old City of Belfort.

The Extension of the FIMU’s site More and more popular, with the public as well as with the musical groups, the Festival will add this year two new stages, to welcome more prestigious formations

like choir with orchestras. The total of stages will then be 16.

The FIMU for Kids uses the FIMU as a pedagogic tool to open up kids’ mind to different styles of music and different cultures.Activities around “Discovery of music and instruments” as well as “Workshops of instruments manufacturing” are organised every afternoons of the festival by music teachers of Belfort.

To allow everyone to come and be able to enjoy the festival, the town of Belfort wants to make access possible for the disabled, by taking into account all the handicaps.

Each stage has special places reserved for disabled, three of whom are higher to allow a good view. Parking facilities are created as close

as possible to the festival’ site, and adapted toilets are installed. Also, volunteers are specially trained to accompany disabled if needed, and wheel chairs can be lent.Finally, free transports are proposed by bus for disabled people, from home to the festival, and a free service for travel’s facilities is developed by train from different local stations.

For the past few years, the FIMU developed a green attitude, respecting the environ-ment with the following actions:

● Glass prohibited on the site ● Disposable plastic glasses replaced by consigned specially designed FIMU’s cups

● Installation of containers for cans’ recycling

Park and RideAs the town centre becomes car-free for the festival, free buses will bring visitors from the main car parks around Belfort to the old city during the 3 days of the festival.

By bikeA new place is built for the occasion to park the bikes, the closest possible to the concerts’ places.

By trainSpecial fares are implemented, just for the 3 festival’s days, on the train, from local stations to come to Belfort.Otherwise, there are daily trains from Paris (TGV from Gare de Lyon station, or Corail Intercites from Gare de l’Est station).

By CarThe Motorway A36 comes to Belfort. Take the exits “Belfort Centre”, “Belfort Gare” or “Les Glacis du Château”.

By planeBelfort is 60km far from the Basel-Mulhouse airport, where there are national and international flights.


Belfort, nest of the FIMUFor the past 25 years, the FIMU has been taking place in the streets of the Old City of Belfort, which becomes entirely car-free for the occasion… During the 3 days, musicians and loving music people wander about the streets, places and monuments of the Lion’s City.Fortified, main city of a department wearing the same name, Belfort has always been in the centre of invasion’s desire. To protect the town, Vauban designed a unique system of fortifications, orga-nised around a pentagonal surrounding wall that makes Belfort one of the most spectacular town of the region Franche-Comté, guarded by the Lion, proudly.

The Belfort’s lionDesigned in 1880 by August Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty in New York (US), the Belfort’s Lion has been raised to commemorate the heroic resistance of the town during the 1870-1871 siege, against the Prussian’s army. Knowing that he had to erect a monument modelled on people of Belfort’s courage and bravery, he chose to build “a monument representing a colossal lion harassed, cornered and still terrible in its rage”. The Belfort’s Lion, sculpted in the Vosges’ pink sandstone, is 22m long for 11m tall. It was classified as historic monument since 1931.Majestic and imperious, the Lion became since the town’s symbol. Bartholdi won his bet: the town of Belfort is now for everyone “the Lion’s City”. Today, the animals’ King, set in front of the citadel, overseeing the city, still keeps on eye on the citizens.In 2010 and 2011, Belfort celebrates the 130th anniversary of the Lion. A lot of events are planned during those two years, such as the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Mr. Bartholdi.

The discovery footpath of the Belfort’s CitadelIn the heart of the Belfort’s Citadel, between ditches and fortifications, the discovery footpath allows children and adults to visit this historic place, designed by Vauban, from the medieval fort. This walk goes to the big underground, recently entirely redeveloped, which proposes a specta-cular light show to know more about important characters of Belfort’s history, like Henriette de la Suze or Vauban.

The Jardot’s DonationBorn in the Belfort’s area, Maurice Jardot, drawing’s teacher, historic monuments’ inspector, art dealer…, donated to the town of Belfort a prestigious art collection of the 20th century. Thanks to the Maurice Jardot’s Donation, we can discover paintings, sculptures, water paintings, and drawings made by famous artists, such as George Braque, Juan Gris, le Corbusier, Léger, Picasso, Manolo…
