What does jazz music have to do with the so-called Jasmine Revolution in Arab countries a few years ago? The revolution in the Arab world, which received worldwide attention, was the inspiration for the Jasmim project, a musical idea by French artist Hubert Dupont.

Three years ago, watching TV reports of the unrests and hopes for the change in Tunisia and Egypt, Hubert had an idea for a new project. Jasmim is a group in which he brought together top musicians from different countries.

Currently members of the group include saxophonist Denis Guivarc’h well-known on the Parisian jazz scene, flutist Naïssam Jalali from Syria, Brazilian guitarist Nelson Verasa and percussion virtuoso Youssef Hbeisch of Palestinian origin.

“Shining quintet, bubbling, rich musical universe. This is the music that opens up new territories”, the French Jazz Magazine wrote. “Approachable, but creative music, strong but open compositions”, the Free Jazz internet site noted.

The philosophical vision of Jasmim is a world in which the countries of the Mediterranean region live in peace and quiet and like twins find each other after a long break.

It will take a little more than the good wishes of excellent musicians for the countries of the Jasmine Revolution to settle down. However, this poetic mix of rhythms, sounds, ideas and ethnic colours is the best proof that revolutions, particularly in art, can create very beautiful things.

Stéphane Ollivier welcomed in Jazz Magazine “A rigorous and ultra-contemporary poetry and an absolute irresistible lyricism and swing” about his album with Rudresh Mahanthappa (Spider’s Dance, 2007, ****Jazz Magazine).

Hubert Dupont & Jasmim’s Line-up

Hubert Dupont: double-bass. Naïssam Jalal: flute.

Denis Guivarc‘h: alto sax. Nelson Veras: guitar.

Youssef Hbeisch: riqq, darbuka, percussion.

The album was released in Octobre 2013 (Ultrack / Distrib Musea).

JAZZ MAGAZINE N° 654 – October 2013

« CHOC » Award

“Excellent rhythms creator” “A sparking quintet”

“A personal rich universe, hybrid, shimmering” “An obsessive lyricism directly inherited from Steve Coleman”

“This music […] opens up new territories”

HUBERT DUPONT Biography

The poetic alchemy in his music shows his

fascination for new forms - improvisation has to be a game with new rules – as well as unexpected elements of rooted traditions, with an expressive and steady tone.

In 2005, he was named as the best Newcomer of 2005 for his bass-solo album Ultraboles. He leads Dupont T, inviting indo-new-yorker sax player Rudresh Mahanthappa, and releases the acclaimed Spider’s Dance in 2007. Dupont T reinvents itself and becomes Smart Grid in 2017, the album is in preparation.

He leads VoxXL!, an encounter between Mike Ladd’s spoken word and its

traditional Senegalese version : the “tassou”, sung by Ibrahima Diasse ; also Golan a jazz sextet with oriental flavor based on Trio Sabil.

He plays the double-bass in KARTET (since 1990 with Benoit Delbecq,

Guillaume Orti & Chander Sardjoe), and electric bass in THÔT, Stephane Payen’s band.

He performed and recorded with such jazzmen as Robin Eubanks, Harold Land, Steve Lacy, Glenn Ferris, or Laurent De Wilde, Magic Malik, Hasse Poulsen, Stefano Di Battista, Fabrizio Cassol, Steve Argüelles, Wolfgang Puschnig, Nicolas Genest, Calvin Weston, the Vancouver Improvisers’ Collective... as well as the Parisian underground scene. Out of jazz, he also performed with Fodé Diop Sabar Group (Sabar Ring), with Kamilya Jubran, Nabil Khalidi, Toufic Farroukh, Elie Maalouf, Saeid Shanbehzadeh… His latest musical adventure Hubert Dupont Explore Explove was presented at the Festival Sons d'Hiver on February 3, 2018.

NAISSAM JALAL Biography

Naïssam Jalal's compositions are almost figurative. They pull you on a journey that is sometimes stormy and sometimes tender. Her flute paints the landscapes, the faces and the trails, tells the tastes, the colors and the smells of the different worlds. It is a dream full of realities... Naïssam Jalal was born to Syrian parents in Paris in 1984. She studied with the great master of violin Abdu Dagher and met Fathi Salama with whom she played regularly in the most prestigious theatres. Later, she participated in the creation of the band El Dor El Awal and developed an original sound combining east and west. Since 2007, she performed with the Lebanese rapper Rayess Bek, the Egyptian oud player Hazem Shahine and toured in many countries : Egypt, Lebanon, Malta, France… In 2009, she released the album To Resistances with duo Noun Ya. In 2010/2011, Naïssam performed live with the top African musicians of the Parisian scene : Tony Allen, Cheik Tidiane Seck, Kiala, Brice Wassy, Hialaire Penda, Fatoumata Diawar and also Abdoulaye Traore and Mohamed Diaby with whom she recorded the album Debademba. In Lebanon, Naïssam recorded and performed with the group of Palestinian rap Katibeh 5. In 2012, she performed with the great names of the American jazz scene like Jamid Drake or in Michael Blake's ensemble "Kingdom of Champa". At the same time she created her own quintet and played in the most important theaters in Paris (New Morning, Jamel Comedy Club...)

DENIS GUIVARC’H Biography

For long in the shadow of the charismatic Magic Malik, Denis Guivarc'h could be one the best kept secrets of saxophone. He shared with Magic Malik as well as Steve Coleman the oceans of the heady metrics and the complex harmonic formulas... Denis Guivarc'h insists on what he thinks to be the two founder elements of the Colemanian identity: the "funk" bass - or the permanent preoccupation of the groove - and the use of claves from all origins. He nevertheless is a free musician who really stands back to the model. Denis's phrasing is rhythmical, flowing and bouncing. He links with great ease the complex harmonic systems, which allows him to explore all the registers of his instrument. His instrument : alto saxophone, exclusively and without hesitation. Maybe because he first adored Coleman and Greg Osby, but above all because he likes very much to master this nervous instrument. And this is not as easy as thought. References and collaborations: After a first record with Eddie Louis' Multicolore Feeling in 1991, Denis Guivarc'h met Magik Malik and the Human Spirit. He followed him within the Magik Malik Orchestra. This was the beginning of a 10-years relationship, 5 records and numerous tours one the most prestigious stages : Marciac, North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Barbican Center London, Knitting Factory... At the same time, he led his activity of sideman, especially with Paco Sery, with whom he toured during one year. He also regularly collaborated with great musicians, such as Steve Coleman, Veras, Pierre de Bethmann, Bojan Z, Julien Lourau, Batiste Trotignon, Louis Moutin, Jean-Pierr Smadj, Minino Garay, Anga Diaz... Denis made off with the record Exit (2006, Crystal Records), accompanied by Pierre de Bethmann, Jean-Luc Lehre and Mathieu Chazarenc. 2014 is the year of a new album: "Reverse", in collaboration with Jean-Luc Lehre (electric bass) and Chander Sardjoe (drums).

YOUSSEF HBEISCH Biography Youssef Hbeisch is an Israeli citizen who “lives between Haifa, Paris and the world’s stages”. He was born in Galilee in 1967. As a Druse he regards himself as a member of a ‘slighted’ minority in Israel. He taught for seven years at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music and for 10 years at Beit Almusiqa (Shafa’amr, Galilee) and gives academic seminars and masterclasses on a regular basis. He is developed contemporary ways of playing and combining complex Arabian rhythms. He plays along some of the most prominent musicians in the Arab region and beyond: Simon Shaheen (Ud player), Süleyman Erguner (Ottoman and Sufi music), Aka Moon (modern jazz), Ibrahim Maalouf (fusion), Bratsch (gypsy, balkan), the Oriental Music Ensemble (classical oriental) and Trio Joubran. He has also formed a duo with Ahmad Al Khatib, Sabîl (and now a trio with Hubert!) One could translate the album’s title - Sabîl as ‘path’. Both the Arabic word and its (partial/inadequate) English translation carry many layers of meaning. One could say the same of this instrumental duo’s original music : it is refined yet exciting, visceral yet subtle, highly virtuosic yet tender.

He has known Hubert for more than ten years and they’re also playing together in the Trio Sabil, the trio Hubert Dupont Aurore, the sextet Hubert Dupont Golan.
