Between 4 and 8 April 2017, the Mall - Brera Design District showcases a groundbreaking image, communication and business-oriented event dedicated to architectural finishings.

The entire show floor is set up as a narrative, telling the story of finishes while seamlessly merging yet differentiating the various display areas. A visually impressive promenade takes visitors through three separate yet closely intertwined locales: a purely commercial trade show in which products are displayed and described in booths sporting an integrated exhibition design layout; a vibrant yet welcoming area that’s perfect for talking business one-on-one; and a more immersive space hosting a dynamic installation drawing attention to the quality and features of individual products. Lightness is the focus of “La Luce del Marmo” (The light of marble), an exhibition promoted by IMM Carrara and centred on the ability of design and lighting to take materials and shapes to a whole new level.space&interiors 2017 is also staging “Absolute Lightness”, an exhibition consisting of a ground breaking interactive digital installation that emphases the relevance of surface finishes to contemporary architecture. A special lounge area will be the setting for “Archicocktail”. Here, personalities from the world of design and architecture will talk with visitors about the latest design and construction trends.

Taking place during Milan’s Design Week, the 2017 edition of space&interiors shines the spotlight on how materials and finishes play such a crucial role in defining the quality of the environments we live in. A group of hand-picked manufacturers will demonstrate the way very different formal or structural innovations can give rise to fascinating outcomes that underscore the rediscovered significance of lightness.

The Carrara Fiere trade fair organisers are bringing eight sculptures by leading architects including Kengo Kuma and Fabio Novembre to the “La luce del marmo” space. The art works are superb examples of how light can bring out the magnificence of marble. By disclosing the hidden beauty of its structure, marble offers designers untold potential for creating incomparable transparencies and effects. Advanced marble working technologies are embedded in the products of Julia Marmi and Cluster Arredo Sistema casa. The latter will also reveal some unexpected new applications involving a diverse range of materials.

Lightness is a mainstay of many products, reflecting a general trend towards simplicity and unfussiness, where the physicality of marble is mellowed and tempered by canny design and cutting-edge technology: this is a notable feature of windows by Jansen, Erco srl, Mogs srl and Zanette Group and, unexpectedly, of doors by Barausse srl, DI.BI. porte blindate srl, Effebiquattro SpA, Legnoform srl, Oikos Venezia srl, Okey, Torterolo&Re and Vighi Security doors SpA.

Design and technology merge effortlessly and effectively also in the field of architectural details, as can be seen in the latest offerings from Officine Mandelli srl, Oli srl and Salice Paolo srl.

LIGHTNESS, AMID INNOVATIONS AND TRENDS

Major technological strides have been achieved in the field of decorations, as can be seen in products by Lu-bek srl, Mazzonetto Wood floors, Renolit Italia srl and Fewood; exciting new results are appearing that revolve around the concept of weightlessness, with a transition from the bidimensional to the tridimensional, and from a larger than ever array of surface textures to options for extreme personalisations.

Another take on lightness obviously involves the use of light itself: lighting elements integrated into materials; relationships between materials and direct or reflected light, designed to produce amazing effects. This forward-looking approach has been adopted by companies such as Bianchi Lecco srl, Abet Laminati SpA and Oikos srl, in the field of wall coverings and finishes, and, in the field of fabrics, Effeitalia srl and Giardini Wallcoverings

Curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects, the exhibit showcases architectural finishes presented by exhibitors in an entirely novel and interactive setting. “Absolute Lightness” looks at how exhibitors apply the concept of lightness to their products.

Lightness has always been one of the mainstays of architecture: lightness drives sustainability, shapes interactions with other materials, and determines the overarching relationship with light itself.

The exhibition stretches literally and figuratively over three narrative levels: one jutting into the wide central promenade, where long white table invite visitors to explore contents and products also using an interactive App designed especially for this journey of discovery.

On an intermediate level, behind huge reflecting surfaces that expand space into new dimensions, appears a visually striking tale of lightness through quotes, targeted product images and illustrations.

On the upper level, a complex system of dynamic projections and lighting hover over the tables. Emphasising the significance of transitions, the aisles between the tables are highlighted by huge circular projection planes hanging from the ceiling and thin lines of light.

The projections explore the concept of lightness from different perspectives: lightness in light, nature, Utopian architectures and in relation to other elements, imbuing the journey of discovery into materials and products with insights and implications.

Lightness. Lightness built into an exhibition design that defines the unique identity of a multi-functional underground space. Migliore and Servetto discuss their approach to the second edition of space&interiors.

Ico Migliore and Mara Servetto graduated in Architecture at the Turin Polytechnic, studying under Achille Castiglioni; later they moved to Milan to work with him at the Milan Polytechnic. In 1997 they founded Migliore+Servetto Architects in Milan, taking on projects featuring different scales and winning numerous international awards. In their projects light and new technologies are employed expressively; they approach interior design aiming to highlight the identity and narrative potential of the surrounding environment.

Among the recent projects: the new format for Dmail stores worldwide, the new Mondadori stores in Italy, the exhibition “Steve Jobs o Visionário” in Rio de Janeiro and in San Paolo, the exhibit “B&B Italia / The perfect density” at Triennale di Milano,“Leonardiana. Un museo nuovo” inside the historical Castello di Vigevano, the new “Chopin Muzeum” in Warsaw and the “New Egyptian Museum” for which they are ‘creative advisors’ and they designed the logo, the coordinated image, the exhibition system and the set up of six thematic rooms.

Architecture’s multifarious treatment of materials: a tale of context and the international language stretching from the Old Continent to the Orient.

The founders of Studio 5+1AA confront the contemporary in the way they address the relationship between territory, city and architecture, constructing this relationship as a representation of reality. The perception and the transformation of reality are, therefore, the keys to a conception of architecture as both body and idea, at once real and emotional, pragmatic and sensual, acceptable and yet also capable of engendering wonder as a catalyst of new understanding.

“La Luce del Marmo” is an exhibit, sponsored by the Municipality of Carrara and Italy’s industrial design association ADI, that aims to raise the profile of the local marble industry; it is taking place in the gap year between even-year editions of the CarraraMarmotec trade fair.

The focus of the exhibition is design and it features three major themes: Carrara marble, lightness and light, the element that most significantly enhances the beauty of materials and shapes. The exhibit will cover an area of 350 square metres, with the setting conveying the atmosphere of a museum. Every marble object has been created specifically for the exhibit by a manufacturer in partnership with a designer. Standing in the square directly in front of the entrance to space&interiors and symbolising the exhibit, is a majestic block of Carrara marble ingeniously made to glow from within, entitled “BlockTheRock”.

Eight exhibitors are in the spotlight: Campolonghi, Errebi Marmi, Fibra, Franchi Umberto Marmi, Garfagnana Innovazione, G.M.C. Graniti Marmi Colorati (in partnership with Jing Living Furniture Design), Marmi Carrara and Sa.Ge.Van. Marmi. Each exhibitor has been paired with an acclaimed designer, and together they show how creativity and passion can turn Carrara’s “white gold” into art works and artefacts of extraordinary visual impact.

space&interiors is also hosting the latest initiative from Internazionale Marmi e Macchine S.p.A. (IMM), the organisation that promotes the Carrara Marble District.

space&interiors represents the market for finishes and retrofits. The second edition of the event is taking place against a backdrop of continuing growth for the Italian construction industry.

According to a recent report on economic trends cycle by ANCE, the Italian association of private construction contractors, investment in housing starts will remain low in 2017 while investment in “extraordinary home maintenance” is expected to increase by 1.4% this year, following a rise of 1.7% in 2016.

Residential property sales have grown by 18.9% compared to 2015, and home loan approvals are also increasing satisfactorily. The total value of credit approvals for home purchases is up for the second year in a row. The figure for the first three quarters of 2016 amounted to €35.7 billion (up 26.8%)

An upswing on the domestic market (1.2%) is driving production across the industry, while exports are slowing down. Production is up 3% in the flooring sector, while exports are slightly down (-2.4%).

Sales to the leading markets of Switzerland (+8.5%), USA (+6.9%) and China (+63.9%) are still strong, while demand from smaller markets is generally flagging. The domestic market is performing quite well at +4.9%.

The crisis in the main export market for wooden doors, Russia, is still dragging down door exports (-14.5%), with France down 22.4%b and the UK down 16%.

Window exports have dropped significantly, from €34 million to approx. €31 million, also as a result of shrinking demand from smaller markets. Conversely, demand from the US market is thriving at +30.6%.

In Italy, combined door and window sales are up 1.7%.As a whole, sales to both Italian and international customers of finishings for the construction industry are expected to pick up in 2017, suggesting an upcoming turnaround in outbound trade.
