MAMMOTH PRINTSHOP BACKGROUNDER

Mammoth PrintShop is a full-service screen-printing facility specializing in handcrafted

products and designs in Auburn, Ala. Its experienced staff is trained to help customers with their

order from start to finish from finding the right style garment to creating a design or logo.

Owners Eric and Jessica Graham have more than 15 years of screen-printing experience.

After years of working in the industry, the Grahams decided to open a business of their own

which led them to create Mammoth PrintShop. In 2004, after working with borrowed equipment

and workspace, they moved the business into a small building on Pear Tree Road on the outskirts

of Auburn. It was at this space they started screen-printing with just one little purple press and

dryer.

Today they have since expanded to a 20,000 square-foot space in Auburn Industrial Park

and are the largest screen-printing shop in the Auburn/Opelika area. Some of their clients

include VH1, Burger King, Johnny Cupcake and the Bacon Brothers. T-shirt orders can range from

24-100,000 shirts depending on the clients’ need. While Mammoth PrintShop receives most of

its business from Internet orders, they plan on expanding more in the community.

ERIC GRAHAM

CO-OWNER

Eric Graham, co-owner of Mammoth PrintShop, was born and raised in Prior Lake, Minn. During his senior year of high school, he realized just how fervent his love for screen-printing was when working at Streamline Design. Unlike most 18-year-olds, Eric quickly learned in the midst of his freshman year at St. Olaf College that his skills and passion in the screen-printing business surmounted the opportunities he would have as a college graduate. Eric worked at Streamline Design from 1995 to 1999, serving as manager for the majority of his employment.

In 1999, weariness set in as Eric decided to take a break from screen-printing. He moved to Auburn, Ala., in order to pursue a self-employed web design business. Resistance failed, and he could no longer stray away from his first passion. He worked for two local screen-printing companies, Southern Man Design and Standard Deluxe, a few months later. The companies left Eric with a desire for a heavier challenge: Entrepreneurship.

In 2004, Jessica Graham, Eric’s wife and co-owner of Mammoth PrintShop, encouraged and supported his business endeavors. Though they were without a business plan, Eric established Mammoth’s first foundation of clients through his musical history. The young couple began the company without capital, investors, a building or much equipment. Their hopes encompassed only one goal: to own a screen-printing shop. Due to Eric and Jessica’s creativity and background, Mammoth quickly moved from a small, rented building to a 20,000 square ft. warehouse.

As a business owner, Eric believes it is important to understand how to perform each procedure within the screen-printing process. His main responsibilities consist of e-mail correspondence, invoices, work schedules and T-shirt orders. Most importantly, he ensures that all employees reach the standards of Mammoth with the greatest quality and efficiency. Eric’s success can be accredited to his motto, “Work smarter, not harder.”

Their dedication to Mammoth has proven successful, bringing in clients such as Burger King Studios, VH1 and the Bacon Brothers. Mammoth has also been featured in national music magazines along with local newspapers. Eric and Jessica are currently striving to build their local clientele and hope to expand more internally in the near future.

How should we prepare our artwork? Mammoth PrintShop prefers Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files. Please convert all text to paths/outlines or curves to eliminate the need for fonts. How should I size my artwork? Clients can print artwork on paper first to see what size looks the best up against an actual shirt or garment. The more shirts a client orders, the cheaper they are per shirt. Orders under 24 may be subject to additional fees. What forms of payment do you accept? A Day in the Life…

Seven years ago, Eric Fisher did not know screen-printing was even a possibility as a profession

and now he is the traffic manager at Mammoth PrintShop. After moving from Syracuse, New York, to

Auburn, Ala., in 2007, Fisher planned on applying at the local Olive Garden when Eric Graham offered

him a job at Mammoth.

Today Fisher’s days at Mammoth follow a routine schedule that is always subject to change

depending on what the first part of his day brings. After clocking in, his first hour includes checking the

emails and phone messages received from the night before. Usually he addresses e-mails by the date

and time they were received and coordinates orders with Graham. The duo places all the jobs they

want to send out that day on the shipping board to help keep orders on the correct time schedule. This

part of his day is often the most important because it is helps prioritize which orders need to be done

each day. Most of the 20 to 30 e-mails Fisher receives daily are quote requests and production-oriented

questions.

“The questions can vary from ‘what is the difference between the foil and metallic ink?’” Fisher

says, “To ‘how quickly can I get an order?’”

The next step in Fisher’s day is recording all the clients’ names and orders in his log which

consist of a thick notebook, his seventh to date. After this, he prints the new orders that have come in

and does a “lap” around the store to make sure all parts of production are up to date on the which

orders have priority. Most of his morning is spent doing preparation work so that he has a clear path for

the rest of the day.

Answering the phone also stands as a constant responsibility during his day. “I am constantly

doing something else and the phone will ring and I have to readjust whatever I am doing,” Fisher

explains. Though he is required to multi-task, he enjoys this part of his job and finds it exciting because

he’s “not afraid to ask them how [the customers] are doing and treat them like a real person.” Because

he is invested and interested in his work, Fisher knows that elicits a positive response from customers.

After a quick lunch break, Fisher organizes the individual clients’ orders, specifically

documenting the quantities, styles and colors of the client’s preference. Next, he orders shirts from

distributors. Mammoth typically works with three to four distributors, among them being Alstate and

American Apparel. After placing orders with distributors, Fisher makes another round to check out the

production in the warehouse to ensure efficiency and accuracy among the employees. He also checks on

the garments that are already in stock just in case a client calls in last minute for a rush order.

Fisher continues his day in a style similar to the beginning of his day; rather this part is based

more around shipping. He assesses the jobs that need to be sent out at the end of the day and

collaborates them into their determined destinations.

Three stages take place prior to the official shipping out of the orders. First, the shirts are

“pulled.” This process is the most tedious because of the inspections that must be made when the shirts

arrive from the distributors. The shirts must be counted and inspected for any defects. After ensuring

that each shirt is flawless, it is printed. Stage two consists of folding and re-counting the shirts. There are

two ways a shirt can be printed: (1) manual press or (2) automatic press. During the automatic press,

stage two begins during the printing and production process while stage two happens after production

when using the manual press. All shipments are double checked before the last stage. Finally, stage

three completes the process by Mammoth employees boxing up the shipments and preparing them at

the door for the UPS driver to pick the orders up by 4:30 in the afternoon. On average, six to 24 boxes

are shipped out every day.

At closing time, around 5 p.m., Fisher takes all of the information he had written down from his

phone log and converts it into an e-mail for Graham. Overall, Fisher states that the phone log is the most

important part of his job. The e-mails he sends to Graham after each day ensure clear communication

lines between Fisher and Graham while also helping to create a basic understanding among

management of all orders, complaints and praises throughout the day.

Fisher brings passion and fervency to Mammoth PrintShop. He thinks screen-printing is more

personal than other retail industries because the company creates a specific product targeted to a

client’s interest and design preferences. To emphasize their passion for their clients, Mammoth writes

down the client’s personal shirt size on the order form and sends free T-shirts with each shipment.
