In short, the standout AI feature of KIBIT is that it can understand the subtle behavior of humans – which is often inexpressible by words – providing support to people in a wide range of everyday situations. KIBIT is an original AI-based search engine created by FRONTEO in Japan. The name KIBIT is derived from the Japanese word “kibi” (meaning subtlety) and “bit,” the smallest unit of information in computing. KIBIT incorporates our desire to one day create “AI that can understand the subtle traits of human behavior.”

KIBIT integrates a variety of AI technologies related to machine learning and data evaluation and a knowledge base that has been built up and systemized from actual data analysis in real-world situations. Using these resources, KIBIT can identify “kibi” (tacit knowledge, judgment systems and feelings of individuals) from only small sets of training data. KIBIT is integrated across all our products in each business domain. The following examples illustrate its high level of perceptiveness.


Patents that Support Our AI-based Data Analysis BusinessFRONTEO has been awarded a total of 79 patents. As of October 31, 2015, core technologies related to the concept of replacing or supporting human decision-making (AI technologies) account for 62 of those patents (78%).

FRONTEO has secured 51 patents for proprietary machine learning technologies (technology that evaluates the relevancy of data to certain events), accounting for 65% of all FRONTEO patents. This illustrates how we are building an unrivalled position in machine learning over our competitors. The patents provide powerful protection to a wide range of products underpinned by our AI-related technology (Landscaping) that help users answer questions about the importance of certain data, such as: “Is the data relevant to a particular legal case?” (litigation support), “Does the data point to an elevated risk of in-hospital falls?” (medical risk forecasting), and “Does the data match user interests?” (digital marketing services).

We have also secured 15 patents related to the unique FRONTEO concept of Behavior Informatics (technology that analyzes and uses human behavior models), accounting for 19% of the total, and 13 patents for our natural language processing technology (technology that analyzes and uses sentence structure), accounting for 16% of the total.

At FRONTEO, we put considerable emphasis on protecting our proprietary technologies, unique brands and other intangible assets as intellectual property through the use of patents and trademarks. As a technology company involved in data analysis worldwide, we are actively applying for patents and acquiring rights in multiple overseas jurisdictions.

FRONTEO’s operations are focused on providing support for the discovery process for clients in the United States and across Asia (cross-border litigation support). FRONTEO mainly uses the PCT application route to secure rights in the U.S. and Asia (China, South Korea and Taiwan). Also, we have acquired new European corporate clients through our M&A activity. This enables us to further develop our presence in the European market, which will include securing business rights in the region.

In this way, our business is likely to become increasingly global, so we intend to secure business rights in each country as an initial step to protect our IP. We will also implement a patent strategy to mitigate legal risk.
