AS+P mourns the loss of Professor Albert Speer

AS+PAlbertSpeer+PartnerGmbHmournsthelossofitscompany´sfounderandlong-standingManagingDirectorProfessorAlbertSpeer.ProfessorSpeer,aged83,passedawayintheafternoonof September 15thsuddenlyandunexpected,surroundedbyhisclosestfamilymembersandfriendsinFrankfurt.

Untiltheendof2016,ProfessorSpeerwaspartoftheManagementBoardofAS+Pandcontinuedtobeavaluableadvisorandsourceofinspirationandideasforourarchitectureandplanningoffice.Togetherwiththechangeofmanagementsuccessfullycompletedattheendof2016,thetransitiontoanewgenerationtookplace.ThistransitionhadalreadybeeninitiatedbyProfessorSpeerhimselfatanearlystageandwasrelevantlyshapedbyhim.Untiltoday,thephilosophyandapproachofAS+ParebasedonprinciplesandvaluesstronglyrepresentedbyProfessorSpeer`sideals,andonthepassion,curiosityandcreativitywithwhichheinspiredeveryone.

Indeepsadness,webidfarewelltoanextraordinarymanwhowasalwaysmoreafatherlyfriendthanasuperiorandwhowillremainaninspirationandidoltoallofus.OurcondolencesandsinceresympathygotothefamilyofProfessorSpeerandallthoseclosetohim.

ProfessorAlbertSpeerwasbornin1934inBerlin;heinitiallytrainedasacarpenterandgainedhishighschoolleavingcertificatebeforestudyingArchitectureinMunich;hethenwentontospecializeinplanningentirecitiesandregionsworldwide.ProfessorSpeerwasChairofUrbanandRegionalPlan-ningatKaiserslauternTechnicalUniversityforover25years.Inthisfunction,heinfluencedmanyofhislatercolleaguesalreadyduringtheiruniversitystudies.In1964,hefoundedhisownarchitectureandplanningfirmwhichhe,togetherwithpartnersandcolleagues,furtherdevelopedintoaninternationallysuccessfulandacknowledgedcompany.Nowadays,AS+Pemploysmorethan200employeesinitsofficesatFrankfurtandShanghai.

ProfessorAlbertSpeerhasbeenamemberoftheGermanAcademyforUrbanandRegionalPlan-ningsince1970.In1995,hefoundedtheProfessorAlbertSpeerFoundationwhichisdedicatedtothetrainingandpromotionofyoungarchitecturalandplanningtalents.In2004,hereceivedtheLeadingArchitectureAwardfromtheGermanAssociationofArchitectsandCivilEngineers.Since2008,hehasbeenamemberoftheBoardofTrusteesof“NationaleStadtentwicklungspolitik”(NationalUrbanDevelopmentPolicy).Prof.AlbertSpeerhasreceivedtheGoetheBadgeoftheCityofFrankfurt/Main,theLeadingArchitectureAward,andtheFederalOrderofMerit.In2011,hewasmadeanHonoraryProfessoroftheTechnicalUniversityinMunich.

ProfessorAlbertSpeerwasbornin1934inBerlin;heinitiallytrainedasacarpenterandgainedhishighschoolleavingcertificatebeforestudyingArchitectureinMunich;hethenwentontospecia-lizeinplanningentirecitiesandregionsworldwide.Prof.SpeerwasChairofUrbanandRegionalPlanningatKaiserslauternTechnicalUniversityforover25years.Nowadays,thearchitectureandplanningfirmhefoundedin1964hasapayrollofmorethan200employees.FromtheoutsettherewasaninternationalthrusttoAlbertSpeer’swork.In2007,AS+PAlbertSpeer+PartnerGmbHopenedabranchofficeinShanghai.

HismostimportantprojectsincludethemasterplansforseveralnewcitiesinChinaandfortheEXPO2000inHanoveraswellasthesuccessfulbidfortheFIFAWorldCupTM2022inQatar.Amongotherthings,Prof.AlbertSpeerdesignedtheDiplomaticQuarterinRiyadh,SaudiArabiaanddrewupconceptsfortheCentralAreaofAbuja,theNigeriancapital.Since2010,heworkedonthestrategicmasterplanfortheCityofAlexandriainEgypt.InGermany,hedevelopedthemasterplanforColognecitycenterandthememorandum“FrankfurtforEveryone”,astrategicurbande-velopmentstudywhosetargethorizonis2030.2013sawthecompletionoftheFraportAGhead-quartersatFrankfurtAirportandoneofthenumerouspassiveapartmentblockprojects,the“LyonerCarrée”.From2012to2014,theofficewasworkingonthepioneeringmasterplanandinnovationmanualforInnovationCityRuhr|ModelCityBottrop.ThenewconstructionfortheHeidelbergCe-mentHeadquarterswillbereadyforusein2019.

ProfessorAlbertSpeerhasbeenamemberoftheGermanAcademyforUrbanandRegionalPlan-ningsince1970.In1995,hefoundedtheProfessorAlbertSpeer-Foundation.In2004,hereceivedtheLeadingArchitectureAwardfromtheGermanAssociationofArchitectsandCivilEngineers.Since2008hehasbeenamemberoftheBoardofTrusteesof“NationaleStadtentwicklungspolitik”(NationalUrbanDevelopmentPolicy).ProfessorAlbertSpeerhasreceivedtheGoetheBadgeoftheCityofFrankfurt/Main,theLeadingArchitectureAward,andtheFederalOrderofMerit.In2011,hewasmadeanHonoraryProfessoroftheTechnicalUniversityinMunich.

In a world in which planning and building projects are becoming ever more complex, AS+P consciously opts for a multidisciplinary approach. Our team of 200 architects and urban plan-ners, landscape architects and transport engineers develops and conducts projects on all scales together with BIM coordinators, geographers, interior designers, and project managers. From our offices in Frankfurt and Shanghai we are active on projects all over the world.

Alongsideourclassicfieldsofwork,includingdesigningofficesandhousing,andprovidingurbanplanninganddesignservices,weareactiveinanumberofspecialistfieldssuchascultureandeducation,sportsvenues,airportandtrade-fairplanning,nottomentiontheplanningofmega-e-ventsandmajorsportingevents.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatourobjectiveistocreateresource-sa-ving,energy-efficientcities,neighborhoods,andbuildings.
