The 90/100 ton size class truck crane has been the meat and potatoes of the taxi and steel erection busi- ness for years. The mobility and flexibility of the size class has been popular throughout North America over the past decade. When Link-Belt introduced their class-leading 86110 in 2015, many assumed it was going to lead to the demise of the HTC86100 which was an update from the 90-ton version that was introduced in 2004. The additional features of tilting cab, 164’ boom, three piece bi-fold fly with self erection and swing assist system and the additional 10k in counter- weight added tremendous capability and chart advantages, however, features also add cost and weight. For some, the extra investment just doesn’t make sense financially for them. With a cost savings in the high five figure range, a well-equipped HTC86100 is still the choice for many crane fleet owners. The 90/100 ton size class truck crane has been the meat and potatoes of the taxi and steel erection busi-ness for years. The mobility and flexibility of the size class has been popular throughout North America over the past decade. When Link-Belt introduced their class-leading 86110 in 2015, many assumed it was going to lead to the demise of the HTC86100 which was an update from the 90-ton version that was introduced in 2004.

The additional features of tilting cab, 164’ boom, three piece bi-fold fly with self erection and swing assist system and the additional 10k in counter-weight added tremendous capability and chart advantages, however, features also add cost and

weight. For some, the extra investment just doesn’t make sense financially for them. With a cost savings in the high five figure range, a well-equipped HTC86100 is still the choice for many crane fleet owners.

Fortunately, the leader in hydraulic truck cranes continues to offer both models as well as the HTT version that features all wheel steer.

CRW has both models on order for stock spring delivery.

Buck Construction, Inc. of Presque Isle, Maine is a full-service General Contractor specializing in concrete, heavy Industrial, commercial, and agricultural construction.

They are currently renting the Link-Belt 110RT for the project at McCain Foods in Easton, Maine doing a structural steel roof overlay on a 41,000-square-foot cold storage facility. With the 110RT set at 137’ of main boom and 58’ of jib at a 30° offset, they were able to set a 75’ long, 2,800 lb. bar joist at 145’ radius with ease.

“Wood’s CRW has become a big part of our company over the past 13 years in making projects like this possible for our company” said Grant Clark of Buck Construction, Inc. “We look forward to keeping this relationship going for many years into the future.”

Link-Belt 110RT Spotlight

The first part of the year is when many in our industry begin the planning of what their needs will be for the coming construction season. Many questions are asked: What does our work load look like today? How reliable and safe is my current fleet? Do I have the right mix of machine capacities for my work? Will my current units pass the OSHA and DOT inspections without a major expense?

Mobile cranes are expensive and the decision to expand, update or change fleet mix should never be taken lightly. If you do determine that a fleet change is required, several other factors need to be considered relative to timing. Is my current work load temporary or does it have legs? What is my cost to borrow now vs. later? Are we in an environment where it will cost me that much more next month, next quar-ter, next year to make a fleet move than doing it today?

The 2018 Wells Fargo Construction Industry forecast re-sults indicate that things are going in the right directions for many of us. Their “Optimism Quotient” was measured at a 20-year high -- 76% of contractors expected to grow their business in 2018. Interest rates and the cost of borrowing are moving higher, off from some historic lows over the past few years. The lenders we work with continue to forecast rising rates on a monthly basis over the next few years. Manufactur-ers are dealing with rising labor and input cost, in particular steel, which is such a huge component in mobile cranes.

Is Now the Time to Make a Move? Something we all need to ponder this time of year.

Update Now or Later?

The primary goal of the Wood’s CRW Service Team is to provide our customers with first class after sales support and ensure your fleet of cranes has the highest up time possible. Part of this process is

performing preventative maintenance to avoid costly downtime. A yearly “Boom Tune Up” is an excellent preventa-tive maintenance proto-col to implement which will ensure the most out of your Link-Belt crane. The five primary goals of the Boom Tune-Up are as follows:

1. Assure your boom adjustments are within Link-Belt specification.2. Assure all parts of the latching boom are working correctly.3. Assure your latching boom is working to peak performance.4. Assure a proactive inspection to prevent costly break downs.5. Assure hydraulic pressures are adjusted correctly per Operator’s Manual.

Our highly trained and certified CRW technicians will thoroughly inspect, adjust and lubricate your crane boom as outlined by a very specific factory procedure. We are currently offering a fixed flat rate of $1,495 plus travel and parts (if required), to perform this vital service to your Link-Belt Crane.

Please contact your local CRW Service Dept. to schedule today.

Latching Boom Tune-Up Special

The trend towards larger capacity boom trucks vs. the three-axle hydraulic truck cranes over the past few years has been driven by boom lengths and cost of dedicated crane carriers. If your crane business is serving 6 plus Northeast States, it can be a challenge to buy the “right” truck to mount under your boom truck. For the most part many customers cover multiple states as they service their customers. Within mere miles of a non-permit situation for a customer in his home state, could be a permit required state just down the road. It is crucial for CRW’s Customer Part-ners to have the ability to cross state lines without hold up or hassle. For the solution, CRW has chosen the Peterbilt 567 powered by theCummins ISX12 – 500HP Engine. The 567’s interior combines rugged-ness and durability for the vocational market with comfort and ergonomics for the driver. The strength under the crane lays with the axles of 20,000

Front, 46,000 Rear, and 13,000 Tag. The upgradeable 40-Ton National Crane NBT40-1 is mounted with 127’ Boom including an Internal A2B System and calibrated for the optional 31’ to 55’ Swing and Sting Jib. With a total approximate Gross Weight just less than 59,000 lbs., the NBT40-1 / Pete 567 is Federal Bridge Legal. That’s mobility.

If your particular circumstances require more crane capacity than inter-state mobility, then CRW can upgrade the unit to a 45-Ton Capacity with simply add on of Counterweight, Chip, and Chart. That’s versatility.

Onboard Ground Bearing

Did you know that Link-Belt Telescopic Crawler Cranes equipped with Link-Belt Pulse allow the op-erator to monitor real time the loadings exerted on the support surface? Simulation mode allows an operator to forecast the expected loadings by input-ting the load prior to making the pick. Just another great reason to own or rent a Link-Belt with Pulse.

Christina Steel, Inc. is in the process of doing the steel erection for the new Expo Center at the New York State Fairgrounds. The Expo Center will be the largest conven-tion center north of NYC between Boston, MA and Cleve-land, OH. The 210,000 sq. ft. building consists of 14 truss-es that are 268’ long, 21’ deep and weigh 60 ton. Due to the size of the trusses, they must be assembled onsite.

Christina has three Link-Belt cranes on site -- an RTC-80100 II purchased from CRW and two TCC-750’s on rent from CRW. They are using the RTC-80100 II to off load the truss com-ponents.

The TCC-750’s are being used to assemble the trusses to be hung.

Christina Steel, Inc. specializes in the erection of structural steel. The company was established in 2000 and is a certified New York State Women-Owned Business Enterprise. It is headquartered in Glenville, NY.
