President’s Letter—Stan Anderson

Harrison Road Update - Perhaps by the time you receive

this Newsletter, construction on

Harrison Road work will already

be underway. Mr. Robert

Schrom, City Engineer, has

advised me that work is

scheduled to start on July 5.

Harrison Road, between

Plymouth and Joy, is to have the

Road Rehabilitation Treatment.

That means removal and

replacement of failed sections of

concrete and the milling and

spot base repair of asphalt. This

followed by placement of a 2-

1/2" asphalt overlay on the

repaired road.

West Chicago Blvd.,

between Inkster and Harrison is

also scheduled to be worked on

this summer, receiving the

Planned Preventative

Maintenance. This consists of

removal and replacement of

selective sections of concrete

road, plus joint and crack

sealing.

This work is paid for

by the road repair tax you passed

a few years ago.

Fountain Park Update - Mark

Toarmina, Planning Director,

has advised that the retail store

proposal submitted by developer

Arkin Jonna, has now been

approved by the City Council.

Council felt that the changes, as

requested, had been complied

with. The proposal is quite

similar to the original plan as

previously approved. A

construction start date was not

available.

Wonderland Villages East and

West - The news on this project

is only that progress has been

made on resolving the

differences. No further

announcement can be made at

this time.

Park Clean-Up - If you were

one of the folks who helped rake

and pick up twigs, etc. from our

Clements Circle Park, you are to

be thanked. Leigh McBain

handled all the arrangements, so

thanks to Leigh.

Emerson Middle School Band

Concert in the Park - We finally

had a dry night for the concert

and could hold the event in the

park. I'm sure there were a

couple hundred people in

attendance. The seventh and

eighth grade bands, plus the jazz

bands, provided some great

music. Mr. John Holtfretter and

the students are to be thanked

and complimented.

Neighborhood Garage Sale -

Etheleen Jennings took care of

the details for this annual event.

Several homes participated and,

except for the weather, it was a

very successful day.

Smart Bus Proposal -

Councilman Don Knapp has

provided details about the Smart

Bus Proposal, now approved by

Council, which will be on the

ballot this fall. The plan would

discontinue the SMART tax of

.6 mil and in its place pass a

capital improvement and

transportation tax of .5 mil, thus

achieving a .1 mil tax reduction.

The Plan would stop the

SMART bus service but would

continue to provide bus service

to seniors and disabled persons,

by using the Community

Transportation Program. That

service, and other needed capital

outlays, such as fire trucks and

ambulances, would be paid for

by the new Livonia

transportation capital outlay and

tax of .5 mil.

We now see the large,

long haul buses traveling empty

on our City streets. What do

you think of the proposed

change? Questions? Call

IN THE NEWS

Be Alert When Entering Plymouth Road!

We have had several

complaints and near

misses resulting

from east-west

drivers speeding

through the red light at the Harrison—Plymouth

Road intersection.

We need help from the police in catching and

stopping these scoff-law drivers. Don’t you

become a statistic. Be alert!

Clements Circle Pool

Our neighbors are

worried and

concerned that our

pool may be closed

as a cost savings for

the city of Livonia.

We hope the city can

find a way to keep it

open. Our kids live

too far from the Community Recreation Center to

bike or hike over there, so we need that facility in

our part of town. I’ve talked to users of the pool

who would be willing to pay a higher membership

fee to ensure it stays open.

Don’t hesitate to call our City Council persons and

administration to voice your concerns.

W ell it has begun! The heavy

equipment is here, the

signs are up and I have

orange barrels on my front lawn! Yes

work on Harrison Rd. has begun.

Damaged sections of the road will be

cut out and replaced with new cement

then once all of the patch work is done

the whole road will be paved over

with a nice new layer of asphalt!

This is a long over due improvement

that has been a subject of many

general meeting through the years and

that we have been wait patiently for.

Now that the work has started we

need to do our part to make sure the

construction workers can get there job

done quickly and safely and without

too many interruptions from our

neighborhood traffic.

Please try to plan your travels around

this construction and avoid Harrison

Rd if at all possible! If you do need to

use Harrison Rd. the construction

company has asked that at this time

you use the street as a one way Road

moving from North to South! This

will help to lessen the congestion on

Harrison and keep things flowing.
