Norwegian Elkhound AssociaƟon of American, Inc. January — February 2012 Two months and counƟng. I am geƫng excited. I am hav- ing ashbacks to past NaƟonals and the people that made them special. Can I get organized in Ɵme? Will I be able to do everything that I want to do when I get there? I don’t know! If you have not made reservaƟons, do it NOW! The reservaƟon desk may tell you that there is a $75:00 pet fee and $15:00 a day parking fee. We do not pay those fees. You will be charged directly for any room damage, and you will have one free parking space for each room. Parking is at a premium on Shelter Island be- cause of Port Police, and Home Land Security re- stricƟons. Event parking is $15:00 a day and hourly park- ing is more than that. People commuƟng from San Diego should plan for a thirty minute drive during rush hour. We have exceeded the number of rooms that we had blocked out. I have asked the hotel to hold ten more rooms through the end of February. Mr. Harry Hawn will be the Sweepstakes Judge, and Ms. Sky Masson will be the Futurity Judge. We have 52 liƩers entered for the Futurity. Don’t miss it. This should be a show to remem- ber. I hope to see you there. See the arƟcle in this newsleƩer on our 75 th Anniversary for NEAA. The show commiƩee is puƫng together a presentaƟon for the hospitality room. If you have infor- maƟon to contribute about NEAA history, contact Leslie Trapnell or Margaret Williamson. AKC has started charging for the performance staƟsƟcs. It took your board weeks to nd out how to buy them. I quesƟon how long we will be able to support the AKC lifestyle. They might have to downsize like the rest of the world. Dr. Susan Goss has sent your board the new NEAA Ca- nine Health commiƩee recommendaƟons to guide us through the evaluaƟon and tesƟng of our elkhounds. CHIC has also made grant recommendaƟons for the Ca- nine Health Fund. Both are under review by your board. This commiƩee is doing its job. NEAA will be taking bids to go on a moose hunt in Swe- den. Contact Ron Peters for details. I am about to complete the maximum term as president of NEAA. That is a good thing. I ask that you support the new board in their eorts to unite the membership. This was my main goal that I did not reach. NEAA has such potenƟal. Rally around your next president and help them to reach that potenƟal. Best wishes; Ray Beathard President’s Message

Sunshine February 1, 2012

Here we are a er a glorious fall and unusually warm start to winter. The weather has finally brought us the severe

cold, blowing snow and slippery ice that we, in West Central Wisconsin have come to dread.  The water freezes in

the rabbit pans and the dog buckets, and I have to bundle up and wear my “Yak-Traks” when I go outside. Let me

say those are a wonderful inven on. There are probably many brands, and no ma er which you buy, they are a

good investment to avoid falls on slippery snow or ice.  Of course I had to take a small tumble on wet grass under

snow before I a ached them to my boots!  No harm done, thankfully.

At the end of 2011, Betsy Brown had eye surgery and also fell again. She is facing the  possible prospect of more

surgery.  Last year she had quite a  me of it, and I hope that her bad luck will soon end and she can return to a

healthier life.

I stopped the sta n drugs which have given me trouble with side effects for the past several years with muscle

pain and weakness. In addi on, my two minor surgeries went well, one to remove a large varicose vein and the

other a  small skin lesion (believed to be benign but awai ng the report). Obviously there hasn’t been much

sunshine news in that I have to put myself into the  report!

Star ng off  the new year. We find Betsy Brown having physical therapy . Jerrie Schweizer had good news in her 3

month check up and is in remission. We sure enjoy hearing that.  Please keep Diane Coleman in your thoughts as

she recovers from surgery.  We wish also healing thoughts to Leanne Sines who was hospitalized in early January.

Please do let me know if you are ill or hospitalized. [email protected] is the email to use to contact me.

Stay well and stay ver cal. If you live in an area of snow and ice, use some sort of cleats on your boots. Its sort of a

nuisance but well worth it to avoid a fall.

2011 VERSATILITY REPORT By Kari Olson

It  was a produc ve year for many of our members who are really enjoying a variety of ac vi es with their dogs  Earning Versa le Norwegian Elkhound  tles, with AKC  tles in two venues, we had a total of fourteen teams of dogs and han-dlers! The advent of the new class last year , “Beginner Novice “,  has proven to be  a boon for young dogs, old dogs or people just breaking into obedience.  I really like this class. It is not as stressful for handler or dog as the regular Novice class.  The other  tle added by AKC that was new this year,  was the Therapy Dog Title or THD. It was about  me that these valuable and hard working Therapy dogs got credit for their work.    Five teams of dogs and handlers went beyond that,  to earn a Versa le Norwegian Elkhound Excellent  tle. This means they earned AKC  tles  in three areas of performance..   For the first  me since 2002 we have an Outstanding Versa le Norwegian Elkhound Excellent. I was very excited to hear that. What a testament to versa lity. This dog and handler team earned AKC  tles in FOUR different areas.  The AKC keeps coming up with new  tles and I have to keep changing the Versa lity Rules. Might I say that if a dog  tles in one of these new classes and it is not yet in the Working Rules,  I am s ll giving them credit.  Several of them , Therapy Dog and Lure Coursing Titles are not earned through compe on, rather by comple ng a set number of requirements. I will be upda ng the rules this year to condense some of the redundant descrip ons, and , to make a clause for credit for new AKC Titling venues.   This in its first year of awards, the Therapy Dog program at AKC, requiring 50 visits at a nursing home or other se ng, awarded the THD to five Norwegian Elkhounds. I have listed them below, following the Versa lity list.   2011VERSATILITYVNE (14) Ancient Ridge Magic Arrow CD RE THD      Marilyn Slaton Ch Apple N ThomThom Isabelle   BN      Chris ne Olson/Gayle Thomas CH Arc cRidge's Worf CD          Roberta/Richard Oxley Ch Janor’s Guilty as Charged CD RE        Dennis Bell Peer Gynt’s Could It Bee Majic BN RN THD      Marilyn Slaton CH Rai-Mai's Cocoa Cabana Banana NAJ      Ron / Sandra Peters Ch Rai-Mai’s Mudpie Mojo NA NAJ        Ronald/ Sandra Peters CH Ridgerunner's Arc c Nite Stargate CD        Roberta/ Richard Oxley Ch Royal Crown’s A C Delco RN        Mike Ellison   Ch Snojager Midsummer Fireworks BN       Dominique Mercurio      Ch Strom Dancing With The Stars CD      Karen Freudendorf         Ch ThomThom N Apple Independence BN      Cecelia Cathey        Ch Vikrest Silver Streak CD         Leslie Forrest/Pat Viken            Ch Vindarne’s Earth Wind and Fire NAJ      Tracy L Smith VNEX (5) Ch Charilor Klassic Nordic Idun RN MX MXJ      Edith Finsaadal / Lori Machacek/ Margaret M Kabala/ Eric Lanzl   Ch Kamgaard Kaballero CD NA         Mallory Golladay      Ch Kamgaard Katch The Buzz RE OA OAJ OF      Antoine e Sibrel        Ch Peer Gynt’s Remarkable Deed CD THD      Mallory Golladay   Ch Snojager Midsummer Fireworks BN NA NAJ    Dominique Mercurio         Windy Cove A Wild Rose Grows VCD1 RA TDX NAP    Sue Ellen Green         OVNEX (1) Ch Hestsko’s American Patriot RN TD THD      Angie/Bre  Morgan    ********************************************************************************************************** 2011THERAPYDOGTITLESTHD  (5) Ancient Ridge Magic Arrow CD RE THD      Marilyn Slaton Ch Hestsko’s American Patriot RN TD THD      Angie/Bre  Morgan  Peer Gynt’s Could It Bee Majic BN RN THD      Marilyn Slaton   Ch Peer Gynt’s Remarkable Deed CD THD      Mallory Golladay   Tungsten’s Go a Get A Gund THD        Patricia Broyles

Report from your AKC Delegate, Margaret K. Mott

From the AKC Chairman, Ron Menaker comes the following message: “This month, we're pleased to launch a new event that will take place at select dog shows around the country - the AKC Owner-Handler Series. Owner-handlers are the core of the conformation dog sport, making up the majority of show entries. We're pleased to put the spotlight on all of our owner-handlers and acknowledge the time and dedication they put into their dogs. The AKC Owner-Handler Series will take place after Best of Breed judging in each breed ring. This competition will be open to all non-professional owner-handlers, whether experienced or novice. All dogs' eligibility must be indicated by checking the Owner-Handler box on the entry form at the time of entry and will be marked as Owner-Handler eligible with an asterisk (*) in the steward's book and catalog. Owner-Handler Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competi-tion including Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handler eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handler Best of Breed/Variety. If BOB is ineligible and Best of Opposite Sex is eligible, BOS will compete against the eligible Best of Breed dogs of the other sex. If the BOB and BOS winners are both ineligible, the judge will choose Owner-Handler Best of Breed from the eligible Selects and eligible WD or WB. If one of the Se-lects is eligible, the judge will excuse dogs of the same sex as the Select and judge the remaining dogs of the oppo-site sex including the eligible WD or WB. If the BOB, BOS and Selects are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog remaining in the ring. Based on points from Breed, Group and Best in Show wins accrued throughout the year, we'll rank the dogs and in-vite our top owner-handled exhibits to a special year-end event to compete for a Best Owner-Handler Award. AKC Owner-Handler Series Point Scale: (Note: Owner-Handler Series points do not contribute to championship points) Best in Show 100 Group 1 30 Group 2 20 Group 3 15 Group 4 10 Best of Breed 5 I hope that many of you will take part and we look forward to your feedback about the new Series. The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

In the American Kennel Club’s ongoing efforts to recog-nize and celebrate its volunteer club members, The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program was estab-lished in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC Medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis.

This award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsman-ship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club. Medallions are awarded solely at the club’s discretion.

The NEAA is once again soliciting nominations for the AKC Sportsmanship Award. Please send your nomina-tion to NEAA Corresponding Secretary Margaret William-son before the deadline of April 1, 2012. The medallion will be presented at the banquet at the National Specialty.

As always, I‘m here to help you with any AKC questions, problems or concerns which you might have.

Greetings to all Elkhound fans, I hope you are finalizing your trip plans. We have an exciting event scheduled for the San Diego NEAA 75th National Specialty. The committees have been working hard to make this a memorable show. The oceanfront location is fabulous with great views of the harbor and fantastic sunsets. We have a morning walk scheduled, a beach bonfire with s’mores, and a historical showcase of West Coast Kennels of the past. There will be lots to do at the show itself but if you find time, there are many attractions to venture off to....Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Coronado Island, La Jolla, the USS Midway museum and many more. Come see old friends, make new ones and give appreciation to our Great Grey Dogs. Leslie Trapnell NEAA 2012 Show Chairperson

Legislative Corner – Amy Peterson Limit Laws A month into the new year, many state and local legislatures have already had anti-breeding bills introduced into their sessions. Under New Jersey’s proposed A736, anyone selling or offering to sell more than five dogs per year (that’s les than a normal litter!) would be considered a breeder, subject to all the law’s conditions. Any building or other structure, or area whether indoor or outdoor, where more than two dogs are housed for the purpose of selling their puppies for any purpose would be a breeding facility. As of this writing, New Hampshire and Hawaii also have also introduced new anti-breeding bills into their sessions. According to the AKC*, when animal control concerns arise, legislators often look to limit laws as a quick fix. In reality, limit laws cause more problems than they solve. Here is why:

• Limit laws do not address the heart of the problem, which is irresponsible dog ownership. • There is no link between a specific number of dogs and nuisance problems. One dog that barks or runs loose

will cause trouble, while several dogs that are quiet and stay home will not. • Limit laws are extremely difficult to enforce and can be evaded by irresponsible animal owners. • Limit laws may result in a decrease in the number of dogs licensed, since individuals may choose not to license

their pets as a way to avoid giving up a beloved pet. Animal control officers therefore have no way of knowing how many pets an owner has unless they make regular door-to-door inspections, an expensive and time-consuming process that in many cases would require a search warrant. A drop in licensing would also se-verely impact a community’s animal control budget.

• Hoping to evade limit laws, pet owners may try to hide the number of dogs they own. To do so, owners avoid taking their animal to veterinarians and getting needed vaccinations. This not only jeopardizes public health, but also affects rabies prevention and threatens public safety.

• People who are forced to give up their dogs due to limit laws usually relinquish them to local shelters, creating additional financial and emotional burdens for animal control and shelter officials.

• Limit laws would impact those who rescue unwanted animals and either adopt them or find them permanent homes.

• Limit laws target all owners, regardless of their actions or the behavior of their animals. Responsible owners should be allowed to use their own discretion in determining the number of dogs they can keep on their own property.

Also according to the AKC, better alternatives include:*

• Vigorous enforcement of animal control and nuisance regulations, that often already exist, designed to keep communities safe and enjoyable for everyone.

• Effective leash and clean up laws prevent irresponsible owners from letting their pets run loose, possibly endan-gering the public and other animals.

• Public education campaigns to teach residents about responsible dog ownership, such as how to properly care for and interact with pets.

• Use of an arbitrator to mediate neighborhood animal disputes would help settle personal arguments that are not indicative of an animal control problem.

• Alternative sentencing for nuisance law violators, including participation in obedience training classes or com-munity service at an animal shelter.

The AKC advocates responsible breeding practices. Dog owners and breeders bear a special responsibility to their canine companions to provide proper care and humane. treatment at all times. The American Kennel Club (AKC) and its member clubs understand the challenges in. creating effective animal control ordinances for a community. That is why it supports laws that target irresponsible dog owners and substandard animal care. These are the issues that need to be addressed in any law seeking to regulate substandard kennels. Regulations such as limit laws and strin-gent engineering requirements, however, are ineffective, difficult to enforce, and unfair to responsible dog owners. Government officials should instead focus on reasonable, enforceable legislation to crack down on irresponsible own-ers without punishing responsible breeders.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

• AKC SUPPORTS ANIMAL CRUELTY LAWS AND STANDARDS OF CARE. The heartbreaking stories and pic-tures of mistreated dogs are not the result of an individual owning too many dogs. They are the result of irre-sponsible owners who are unable and/or unwilling to properly care for their animals. The AKC strongly oppos-es the breeding of dogs by those who do so without regard for the dogs’ welfare. It supports scrupulous en-forcement of the federal Animal Welfare Act and state and local regulations governing the humane care of animals.

• LIMITING DOG OWNERSHIP WILL NOT PROTECT DOGS. Irresponsible owners exist regardless of how many

dogs they own. There are responsible owners of many dogs and irresponsible owners of one dog. Selecting an arbitrary limit will not prevent these people from being bad owners. A limit on the number of dogs an indi-vidual can own would restrict the many responsible breeders who raise and breed purebred dogs. These breeders make a serious commitment to their animals and to ensuring the future health, welfare and breed type of their individual breeds. They work to carefully screen potential owners to make sure the dogs will be placed in a safe, caring environment. In addition, many proposed laws that target “puppy mills” impact the many responsible fanciers and dog owners who also rescue unwanted animals and either personally adopt them as pets or find them permanent homes.

• LAWS SHOULD IMPLEMENT REASONABLE, ENFORCEABLE STANDARDS. Any bill that seeks to improve

the quality of life and care of dogs must focus on responsible ownership and strict enforcement of neglect and cruelty laws. Laws should be passed and enforced that establish reasonable standards of care. These laws should not, however, impose rigorous engineering and other requirements on breeders that are difficult to follow and enforce.

• LAWS SHOULD NOT CREATE MORE BURDENS ON A COMMUNITY. Limit laws are very costly and burden-

some to enforce. If someone owns more than their allotted number of dogs, they will then be required to dis-pose of those over the limit. These dogs will end up housed in shelters and/or euthanized at the community/taxpayer’s expense. In addition, implementing a bill with stringent engineering and other standards is difficult to enforce and results in an enormous strain on animal control officials.

AKC Meet the Breeds ‐ Orlando Florida –December 17 & 18, 2011

The AKC Meet The Breeds 2011 was held this year during the Eukanuba Invita onal at the Orange County

Conven on Center in Orlando Florida. Highligh ng responsible dog ownership this event gave visitors the

chance to get up close and personal with over 160 breeds.

Members of the Cherokee Foothills Norwegian Elkhound Club offered to par cipate represen ng the Nor-

wegian Elkhound at this event. With the help of some of our NEAA members who were exhibi ng at Eu-

kanuba, the Elkhound breed was well represented. Manning the booth were club members Ken and Debbie

Walker, Brooke Hildago, Doris Ingles, Joanna Ingles and Donna Weeks.  Stealing the show were canine am-

bassadors Cederbends Playing with Fire, CH DInors Indian Love Call, CH Dinors I Got My Game On, Elgwoods

Ice Diamond, CH Quiquen Quartz, and Norelka Aspens Polar Express, and UAGI Kuma Bear.  The elkie ages

ranged from puppy to veteran.

The Breed booths were set up in the West Concourse of The Orange County Conven on center main en-

trance lobby area. This was located between the Conforma on hall and Agility hall as well as in the adjacent

ballrooms. Our booth was located in a ballroom. An official Show Guide was given to each person who en-

tered the venue with detailed maps of booth loca ons as well as demonstra ons and compe ons being

held.

Decorated with a moose-forest backdrop, the booth included a 3 panel photo display board with pictures of

Elkhounds as conforma on dogs, agility –obedience dogs and companions. A digital frame provided a slide

show of elkhounds at play and at work. Handouts with informa on on the breed were available to all who

visited our booth. Ken Walker donned his Viking costume and along with a Cast Iron cook pot used by hunt-

ers to cook their game, with logs and ba ery powered flames added a note of authen city to the booth. The

dogs were by far the most popular part of our booth. In typical Elkhound style the pups were more than will-

ing to be loved on.  We had quite a few visitors who stopped with stories of an Elkhound that once was a

part of their life.   Our ambassadors tried their hardest to

convince these folks that one needed to be a part of their

lives again!

This event is well organized and offers parent clubs an ex-

cellent venue for one on one contact with poten al own-

ers.  This is a great educa onal ac vity and should be giv-

en support by parent and local clubs alike.  If you have a

chance to a end this event, do so. Be er yet volunteer to

be a part of it!

To all who par cipated on behalf of our beloved Elk-

hounds, THANK YOU !!!

2012 NEAA National Specialty

NEAA VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES & RECEPTION

Thursday evening, May 10th at 7pm will be a very special time. A glamorous evening is planned for our beautiful veteran dogs and bitches. Our veterans will compete for the title of Best Veteran Dog and Best Veteran Bitch. Many of our veterans have not had an opportunity to come out and strut their stuff in awhile. Your dog does not have to be a champion to compete in this wonderful event. To honor the occasion, dress code is upscale. There will be an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, canine treats and plenty of time to mingle, making new friends and renewing old acquaintances.

Hope to see you there!

NEAA/NEASC RESCUE PARADE

The Parade of Rescues will precede the NEAA Veteran Sweepstakes and Reception on Thursday, May 10 at 7:00pm. All Norwegian Elkhounds adopted from a shelter or rescue group are eligible to participate. Individuals are allowed a write-up of 200 words or less, which will be printed in the show catalog. Entry is free — completed entry form (below) and write-up must be submitted by mail or email before April 1, 2012 to:

Swedish moose hunt to be auctioned off!

Available at the NEAA Auction on Friday evening, May 11, 2012, will be four (4) Moose

Hunt Excursion Gift Certificates offered by Arvid Göransson of southern Jämtland in Sweden.

Each certificate entitles one individual to a seven-day (7) moose hunting excursion during September 10th – 24th, 2012 or during September 09th – 23rd, 2013 in North Swe-den with Arvid Göransson acting as host. Meals (hunter’s fare) and lodging will be inclusive with wilder-ness bath and/or shower and toilet. Individual travel expenses and/or airfare are not in-cluded. Recommended air travel from the United States would be into Stockholm-

Arlanda International Airport (IATA: ARN) and then by regional service, such as Scandinavian Airlines, to Åre Östersund International Airport (IATA: OSD) in North Sweden.

Each moose hunt will last on average 3 to 4 hours, trailing a Norwegian Elkhound in arduous terrain of rolling hills, forested mountains, and river valleys. If you’re not up to the demanding hike, you can go with a sniper and sit in a special forest location.

For comfort wear practical clothes in layers with a sweat-er and/or windbreaker as well as rugged walking shoes. September in Sweden is normally mild with occasional

rain and average daily temperatures around 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. In the northern re-gions of Sweden the average daily temperature is around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.

For additional information, contact Ron Peters at [email protected] or (828) 625-8820.

brought us to where we are today. The Norwegian Elkhound Association of America was Licensed as a Parent Club by the American Kennel Club in Decem-ber, 1936. What follows are excerpts of events reprinted from the book, The New Complete Norwegian Elkhound, written by Olav Wallo with the assistance of Karen Elvin (Sangrud Kennels) as well as comments taken from the Fourth National Specialty catalog, compiled by Susan D. Phillips. “Just when the Elkhound first came to America is not definitely known, but the earliest record of the breed in this country apparently is the registration of three Elkhounds in the 1913 American Kennel Club Stud Book…These three imports were owned by Gottlieb Lechner, Weiser Idaho. The offspring of these dogs were widely distributed …. Registrations were few in the early years – only 22 Norwegian Elkhounds were registered by the AKC in the first ten years…It was not until 1924 that the American public got its first real impression of the breed when the imported CH. Grimm of Lifjell was placed fourth in the Miscellaneous Class at Westminster. Over the years, Elkhound imports grew in number as dogs arrived here from Norway, England, Scotland and Canada. Ronnie av Glitre was a famous Elkhound, having been owned by President Herbert Hoover and wife. Ronnie (also known as Weijee) was reportedly a gift from the people of Norway as a token of their appreciation to the President for what he did for the country of Norway in their hour of need after World War I. Time magazine featured an article during that period that stated in part, “A small, saucy two-month-old dog with large brown eyes and tail curled up behind arrived in Manhattan last week on the steamer Stavangerfjord. It was one of Nor-way's best elkhounds, on its way to Washington to be First Puppy of the Land. The Norwegian Elkhound Association of America, which met the dog at the boat, had purchased it from Dr. Dyrlage T. Hemsen, one of Norway's most famed dog breeders. They planned to present it to President Hoover to take the place of the late German shepherd King Tut “

Fanciers of the Norwegian Elkhound during the early 1930s were perceptive enough to realize that the best qualities of the breed could be fostered and preserved through an association of interested breeders and exhibitors. At the Morris and Essex show in May of 1934, a group…met to discuss the establishment of such an organization. Bayard Boyesen, Edith Cluett and Amory Coolidge were appointed to draw up a Constitution and By Laws for the group and in February of 1935 the new group was established and included four breeder members and nine associate members. The Constitution and By Laws were adopted at the end of 1935 and the club’s first specialty show was done in May, 1935 and included an entry of 52 Elkhounds, with Norwegian judge Mr. Johnny Aarflot doing the judging. Mr. Johnny Aarflot, was considered an outstanding authority on the breed in Norway and after the show he gave an encouraging talk to the Elk-hound fanciers and awarded a trophy to the dog he considered the best American-bred, Champion Vaaben av Vindsval. The Norwegian Breed Standard as translated by Mr. Aarflot was subsequently adopted and approved by the American Kennel Club in 1935. In December 1936, the club was admitted as a member club of the American Kennel Club.

During the early years, the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America sponsored several what we would call today, “supported” specialties. It was not until an NEAA board meeting, held February 13, 1961 that it was suggested by then President Robert Crafts that the Association undertake a true specialty show. NEAA’s first independent National Specialty was organized and held in April 1962 in conjunction with the International Kennel Club in Chicago. Subsequent National Specialties and results beginning in 1962 were as follows:

1962 First National Specialty: Held in conjunction with the International Kennel Club, in Chicago in April of 1962.
