Thanksgiving may not be a part of our Soto Zen tradition, but the underlying sentiments and values of this iconic American holiday are. At this time of reflection and of giving thanks for life’s blessings, we are reminded that the Buddha teaches us to be mindful, to practice generosity, to have compassion, and to do what is right. With these precepts in mind, we are truly grateful for the heartwarming response to our recent fundraising campaign. So many of you have sent in your generous monetary donations in support of our temple bell restoration and shoreline erosion mitigation projects. Knowing that Mantokuji’s members and supporters still honor the temple’s long history and its important connections to our families and community strengthens and encourages us in our efforts to do our best for Mantokuji. Mahalo to all those who have purchased tickets for Mantokuji Fujinkai’s upcoming Nishime Sale fundraiser on Saturday, November 17. A limited number of tickets may still be available and you may call Cathy Murayama, (808) 283-6125 for more information. On Sunday, November 18 you are invited to a Family Service and Shichi-Go-San Ceremony. We will be celebrating milestone years for some special 7-, 5-, and 3-year old children. Take care. There are now four beautiful banners hanging in the Mantokuji temple. The banners represent each of the fourWisdoms: “Giving,” “Kind Speech,” “Good Deeds,” and “Empathy.” The banners were thought of and developedby the Reverends Jiko Nakade and Myoshin Kaniumoe of the Big Island. The Four Wisdoms are based on theShusho-gi written by Dogen Zenji, the founder of Soto Zen Buddhism. We thank them for all their time and effort. We also say mahalo to the Hawaii Soto Mission Association for sponsoring the project and the cost of providingeach of the Soto Shu temples with a set.

Giving, Kind Speech, Good Deeds, Empathy

“Giving” (Fu-se) means not to covet. In principle, although nothingis truly one’s own, this does not prevent us from giving. Do notdisdain even a small offering; its giving will surely bear fruit. Therefore, we should give even a line or a verse of the dharma, sowing good seeds for this life and other lives. We should give evena penny or a single blade of grass of resources, establishing goodroots for this world and other worlds. The Dharma is a resource, and resources are the dharma. Without coveting reward or thanksfrom others, we simply share our strength with them. Providingferries and building bridges are also the perfection of giving.Earning a living and producing goods are fundamentally nothingother than giving.

“Kind Speech” (Aigo) means, when meeting living beings, to thinkkindly of them and offer them affectionate words. To speak with afeeling of tenderness toward living beings, as if they were one’sown infant, is what is meant by kind speech. We should praise thevirtuous and pity the virtueless. Kind speech is fundamental tomollifying one’s enemies and fostering harmony among one’sfriends. Hearing kind speech to one’s face brightens one’scountenance and pleases one’s heart. Hearing kind speechindirectly leaves a deep impression. We should realize that kindspeech has the power to move the heavens.

“Good Deeds” (Rigyō) means to devise good ways of benefitingliving beings, whether noble or humble. Those who encounteredthe trapped tortoise and the injured bird simply performedbeneficial deeds for them, without seeking their reward or thanks. The foolish believe that their own interests will suffer if they put thebenefits of others first. This is not the case. Beneficial deeds areone, universally benefiting self and others

“Empathy” (Dōji) means not to differentiate; to make no distinctionbetween self and others. It is, for example, like the humanTathagata who was the same as other human beings. There is away of understanding such that we identify others with ourselvesand then identify ourselves with others. At such times self andothers are without boundaries. The ocean does not reject any water;this is Empathy. It is because of this that water collects andbecomes an ocean.

From Rev. Myoshin Kaniumoe of ‘Alaneo Zendo in Hilo
