Yes, we now have our very own Facebook Group! This is the place to share your photos, opinions, information and knowledge with other members and friends of the Guild.

Some possible other uses include: forthcoming guild and local special events, a list (and reviews) of Ontario quilt shops, links to our members’ blogs, a “classified” section where you can buy or sell u s e d q u i l t i n g supplies/equipment, and an advertising section for small home-based or local businesses.

The group is “closed,” which means you must be approved by the administrator to join – all you have to do is ask! (Non-members will be unable to see what has been posted by members.)

Search for “Common Thread Quilt Guild (Ottawa)” and join in the fun.

Our guild is a dynamic and active group of quilters. We can be proud of the quality of activities that are offered throughout the year. Its functioning relies on volunteers to help make our guild be the success that it has.

There are four (4) guild volunteer positions open:

Newsletter: The newsletter allows information (ex: programm of the month, future workshops, fat quarter theme, community projects etc.) to be available to the membership prior to the guild meetings.

Vice President: the first year, the vice-president is learning the job for the following year, where she becomes the president, there is a lot to learn but all of it is done in a friendly atmosphere through the president and past president.

Retreats: Barb Till has done a wonderful job ever since 2008, the guild’s retreat are very popular and appreciated, Barb and her team of volunteers made them a real success. Barb would like to pass the guild’s retreat lead to anyone willing to take over her position.

Fat quarter: We need one more volunteer to keeping the fat quarter club going.

If any of these positions interests you, please contact Chantale Richard, vice president, before or during the April meeting. The guild needs YOU!

Retreats Barb Till

T’was the Month after

Christmas

T'was the month after

Christmas and all through the

house

Nothing would fit me, not

even a blouse

The eggnog I'd tasted, the

cookies I'd nibbled

The roast turkey and gravy,

who was I to quibble

The wine and the cheese I

ate all in haste

Now all the holiday parties

have gone to my waist

When I got on the scale, it

arose such a number

I thought to myself, you are

an absolute wonder

So away with the last of the

sour cream dip

Get rid of the fruitcake, every

cracker and chip

Every bit of food I like must

be banished

Till all of those extra pounds

have vanished

I won't have a cookie, not

even a lick

I'll want only to chew on a

long celery stick

I won't eat candy or have any

pie

I'll munch on a carrot and

quietly cry

Oh dear how life will be a

bore

But isn't that what January is

for

Happy New Year to all, and to

all a good diet

Our guild held our fall in-town retreats at the Notre-Dame-des-Champs Community Centre at the end of October. We had 25 members and 3 guests attend the first weekend and then 26 members and 2 guests during the second weekend. In addition to quality time sewing with our friends, we enjoyed Carrot & Brie Soup, Beef & Barley Soup, Chili, Kassler, Sauerkraut, Scalloped Potatoes, Chicken Cacciatore, Moroccan Beef Stew, Seafood Casserole, Quinoa Salad, and more tasty desserts than we should probably admit to having had. A big thanks to all who helped make such good food! Two of our guests were Joan Blois’s grandchildren Sydney and Erin; it was a pleasure to have such interesting young quilters there. With Joan’s guidance, and I presume fabric stash, they were making themselves two beautiful quilts. (It’s best they save for post-secondary education prior to

accumulating stashes of their own). Both said they would not hesitate to come back, despite my enlisting them in the kitchen for dish cleaning duties.

The weekend of Nov. 21st-23rd we went to Cornwall for an out-of-town retreat. Twenty-five of us stayed at the Nav Centre for two nights and enjoyed a busy weekend sewing and no dishes. It was a nice treat to walk to a bedroom when the sewing was done. The centre has a fairly decent buffet and we enjoyed too much eating – again! On Sunday it was Barbara Thomas’ 80th birthday and we joined in, for a mini-celebration. Barbara’s daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren Emma (11) and Audrey (9) came to surprise her for b r e a k f a s t . E m m a designed and created special labels, she and Audrey applied them to

Lindor Truffle 3-packs and we were each given one as party favours. Birthday parties are such fun! Thank-you! It didn’t end there. Audrey had her own special birthday gift for Barbara; she is studying the violin and we were all treated to Barbara’s gift. We heard ‘Happy Birthday’ first and then Giovanni Martini’s ‘Gavotte’. Retreats can now add ‘concerts’ to the list of things we do.

Our next in-town retreats are in January. You have a choice of January 23-25 or January 30th- February 1st; times are posted on the website. Space still available - sign-up for either weekend by email.

Modern Quilt Perspectives by Thomas Knauer gives insight into

possible sources of your personal inspiration and 12 projects. (682)

You can reserve these books by e-mailing me at library@common thread.on.ca. Please include the title of the book and the number if you know it.

I have updated the inventory and created a new category for modern and improvisational quilts. The categories are p a t c h w o r k , a p p l i q u e , instructional, art, speciality (includes seasonal, baby, and other des ignat ions ) , and m o d e r n / i m p r o v i s a t i o n a l quilts. Some books could be classified into more than one category; however I have selected one category for each book. The updated inventory has books so r ted by ca tegor y and alphabetically by title within each category. It is in the library and available soon on the website. You can e-mail me with any questions you may have.

We were a small but productive group at the Accuquilt Go Log Cabin course with Katrina Kahn. She gives lots of good hints for using the system. Here are the blocks that were done. The ones in the bottom right hand corner are Katrina's.

We will be having her back in the fall for another course. What die would you like to learn about?

Q: How can I help you give to children in Ottawa?

A: Give us quilts or donations of fabric with BOY STUFF on it: cars, dinosaurs, dogs, etc. Give us quilts or donations of fabric that are unisex: bright but absolutely no pink, children, geometrics, stars, etc. Give us 100% cotton solids/blenders (tone-on-tone), please no poly-cotton broadcloth.

Outreach Recipients Catherine Parkinson

The Commi t t ee co l l e c t s donations of fabric, batting or thread and produces kits of fabric to be sewn into tops or finished quilts. Labels identify the quilts as products of our Guild and will be distributed to these programs:

Cuddle Quilts: 22” x 22” These are given monthly to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at the General Hospital. They can be cotton or flannel or a mix but please NO invisible thread. The Community Projects table has battings and backings cut to size for your convenience. Please limit yourself to taking at most three battings/backings per meeting.

NEW! Ronald McDonald House, Ottawa: 40” x 60” or smaller. Children from birth to the age of 18 who have to come to Ottawa for outpatient work through CHEO can stay with their family here. The quilts will be given to the patients by the House Manager.

CHEO Dialysis: 40” x 60”. The recipients are children on dialysis and/or awaiting a transplant. The ages range from 2 to 18.

Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre, Orleans: 40” x 60”. The Centre uses our quilts as part of their programs for the elderly and for abused women.

Interval House, Ottawa: 40” x 60” or smaller. Interval House is a place of refuge for abused women and their family. Quilts are used on their premises as well as taken home by the families.

Chernobyl, Europe: any size finished quilt, tops should be 40” x 60” or smaller. One Canadian’s dedication to aiding the people of this poverty stricken area has resulted in 15 years of giving to orphans, the elderly, children and families. Quilts of every size and type are just one of the items sent with his shipment every spring.

NEW! Cornerstone Housing for Women, Ottawa: 40” x 60”. For 30 years, homeless women have found a home through Cornerstones. Through the staff at the Booth Street residence, we will offer the long and short term residents there a quilt.
