Dear GCDA Members: Welcome to the winter GCDA newsletter. We are a little more than midway through our membership year and time is flying by. I’d like to thank all of you our members for attend- ing meetings, encouraging others to join and for your contributions to our profession. I’d also like to thank the incredible GCDA Board for many hours of hard work! I would like to encourage every member to discuss the benefits of GCDA with someone who is not a member, to encourage them to join. Having a robust group allows us the greatest diversity in both programs provided as well as opinions and help in moving the organi- zation forward. Thank you to the presenters from our first two membership meetings. The expertise and information presented was outstanding. This is one of the greatest benefits of this wonderful group getting to know other nutrition profes- sionals and learning from them. We are all lifelong learners after all. As you look through the newsletter please consider attending the February membership meeting detailed on page 2. Our field is so unique and diverse. Have you considered starting your own business, perhaps undertake consulting…. Statistics show that moving forward the work place will continue to evolve and most of us will change jobs numerous times. Are you prepared for what might lie ahead, even if you don’t think this applies to you today? Additionally, as you will see in reviewing the newsletter, our members have been very busy. Please consider helping in the various ways detailed in the newsletter and remember NNM is just around the corner. Additional opportunities for community assistance will be noted on our GCDA homepage prior to March. We hope you all will consider attending the OAND Conference in May as we celebrate the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 100 th anni- versary. Our own Jason Roberts has worked countless hours leading the team putting this tremendous event together. Jason has also worked very hard in championing helping as many students as possible attend the confer- ence. You can still help by making a dona- tion. (See page 9) On a final note, please use the guest pass and invite a friend to come to the next GCDA membership meeting. We welcome all for a meal, learning and fellowship. Dear GCDA Members:

Welcome to the winter GCDA newsletter. We

are a little more than midway through our

membership year and time is flying by. I’d like

to thank all of you – our members – for attend-

ing meetings, encouraging others to join and

for your contributions to our profession. I’d

also like to thank the incredible GCDA Board

for many hours of hard work!

I would like to encourage every member to

discuss the benefits of GCDA with someone

who is not a member, to encourage them to

join. Having a robust group allows us the

greatest diversity in both programs provided as

well as opinions and help in moving the organi-

zation forward.

Thank you to the presenters from our first two

membership meetings. The expertise and

information presented was outstanding. This is

one of the greatest benefits of this wonderful

group – getting to know other nutrition profes-

sionals and learning from them. We are all

lifelong learners after all.

As you look through the newsletter please

consider attending the February membership

meeting detailed on page 2. Our field is so

unique and diverse. Have you considered

starting your own business, perhaps undertake

consulting…. Statistics show that moving

forward the work place will continue to evolve

and most of us will change jobs numerous

times. Are you prepared for what might lie

ahead, even if you don’t think this applies to

you today?

Additionally, as you will see in reviewing the

newsletter, our members have been very

busy. Please consider helping in the various

ways detailed in the newsletter and remember

– NNM is just around the corner. Additional

opportunities for community assistance will be

noted on our GCDA homepage prior to March.

We hope you all will consider attending the

OAND Conference in May as we celebrate the

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 100th anni-

versary. Our own Jason Roberts has worked

countless hours leading the team putting this

tremendous event together. Jason has also

worked very hard in championing helping as

many students as possible attend the confer-

ence. You can still help by making a dona-

tion. (See page 9)

On a final note, please use the guest pass and

invite a friend to come to the next GCDA

membership meeting. We welcome all for a

meal, learning and fellowship.

Thank you and good health to all!

The first GCDA Member Meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 28th was a GREAT event! The topic:

“School Foodservice: Successful Strategies to Meet Federal School Nutrition Guidelines and Improve Kids’ Health” was held at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in their fabulous Cooking Theatre!

A big thank you goes out to GCDA member Laura Horn for working hard as our liaison at Cincinnati State and she

put a lot of behind the scenes work in in getting everything arranged and set up.

GCDA member Jessica Johnson, RD, LD, SNS, Food Service Director of Milford Schools; and Rachel Tilford, DT,

SNS, Food Service Director of Little Miami Schools tag teamed their fabulous presentation. They are very passion-ate about their jobs and feeding hungry kids a healthy breakfast and lunch so they can learn! And so much more!

It is clear they are hard workers benefiting our profession. Jessica and Rachel made a wonderful sage squash soup and provided a cooking demo. Everyone loved the soup and asked many questions. It was a fun night.

10 new 'Lil Pantry' locations to open around the Tri-State

LOCAL HEROES NEEDED!!!

To help with the project called People’s Pantry Cincy. The project is funded by a People’s Liberty grant which provides

$10,000 to provide 10 mini food pantries in food insecure neighborhoods in Cincinnati.

The pantries will be similar to the little librar-ies that you see around many Cincinnati and

NKY neighborhoods where neighbors can donate books and others can take

them. Local artists will design/decorate them

using old newspaper metal boxes.

We are looking for civic-minded individuals that are interested and willing to “champion”

one pantry by engaging the neighborhood

where it is placed. This can be done using social media, going to community council

meetings, writing press releases, etc. We want the food pantries to be engaging and

sustainable in each neighborhood. You do not have to live or work in the targeted

neighborhoods, but if you have a connec-

tion there, it will make it easier to man-age. Ideally, they should be placed near a

church, recreation center or bus line for safe, easy access.

These are the neighborhoods we are targeting:

Avondale

Camp Washington (have a possible champion) Lower Price Hill (have possible champion)

Millvale/South Cumminsville North Fairmount

Please email or call Lisa Andrews (513-675-6780) | [email protected] if you are interested in helping

with this project. It takes a village! Thank you!

The Lil Pantry in Pleasant Ridge that has served as the pilot for the project. Check out facebook/pleasantridgepantry for info about how to donate and what needs are. So far, the pantry is either full or empty. Neighbors tend to donate a few times per week and we have received some feedback from those using it.

Over the Rhine (OTR) Roselawn

Walnut Hills (have a possible champion)
