President, Cox College

Springfield, Missouri

CONFIDENTIAL

Prepared by

David Boggs April Allen May 2013 This Position Specification is intended to provide information about Cox Health/Cox College and the President position at Cox College. It is designed to assist qualified individuals in assessing their interest.

Overview of Cox College

Cox College is a private, non-profit college accredited to provide nursing and allied health programming. It has a long history of educating compassionate, competent and dedicated nurses and other allied health professionals in Springfield and southwest Missouri. The rich history of this college dates back to the early 1900’s with the admission of three ambitious students studying at the Burge Deaconess Training School for Nurses. Since then, the college has educated more than 2,600 diploma graduates and has served as the backbone of the nursing community in the region and beyond. Recognizing that healthcare in general and nursing profession in particular are constantly changing, Burge School of Nursing became Cox College in 1995. It is an affiliate of CoxHealth, a locally owned non-profit health system with five hospitals in the Springfield-Branson, Missouri market. The components of CoxHealth are described in detail to follow, but this is a key advantage of the program offering all manner of both clinical teaching settings as well as future employer to graduating students. Currently, Cox College has over 850 students and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and numerous program specific organizations. There are two affiliation agreements in place with two Missouri schools. There is a Dual Degree program in place with Drury University campus in Cabool, Missouri (Drury’ main campus is in Springfield) and an RN to BSN program in place with Southeast Missouri College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Collaboration with local schools/colleges and health providers is a key part of Cox College’s success. Educational programs and services offered by Cox College include an Associate, Baccalaureate and Masters degrees and Certificate programs in Nursing and Health Sciences. The Department of Nursing includes a career ladder model: Nursing Assistant certificate, Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and a Nurse Re-Entry program allowing non-practicing nurses to return to the workforce. The Department of Health Science offers entry level programs including certificate programs (Medical Billing and Coding and Medical Transcription), a post-baccalaureate Dietetic Internship and an Associate of Science in Medical Assisting. The career ladder model in Health Science includes the Associate of Science in Radiography (ASR) and post ASR certificates in diagnostic imaging. The college has added a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Imaging (BSDI) bringing the post-ASR certificates to a degree. Additional programs recently added include a Masters Degree in Nutritional Diagnostics and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MOT) to meet the needs of CC customers.

The career ladder concept is being extended as Cox College transitioned the CoxHealth Education Center (CEC) to the college. With the addition of the CEC, Cox College will provide a continuum of learning for students and the health care community: entry level and advanced academic programs, professional development and continuing education. This transition has just begun and will be addressed in the application in terms of future growth to meet the needs of CC customers as well as facilitating internal workforce learning.

CoxCollege is located on the Cox North campus in Springfield. Many of the health system’s acute care services have moved from the North campus to the newer Cox South campus. This has allowed for an abundance of space for faculty and staff offices, classrooms and lecture halls for teaching/community education, the bookstore, and state-of-the-art simulation labs/Learning Resource Center. Some examples of these include a refurbished critical care unit and operating room for simulation as well as imaging equipment and

human patient simulators. In addition there are several fixed computer labs, a mobile computer lab, and other technology/tools in place to facilitate interactive learning. Tuition and other sources of revenue are in excess of $7.1 million and they have a positive contribution margin of 14 percent. In addition to scholarships, grants and loans, there are many ways that Cox College has made this education affordable and accessible to a diverse group of people within the region and beyond. Key areas of focus for the future are excellence in customer service to all constituents (particularly students), offering educational programs that meet the needs of the healthcare community, being metrics and outcomes driven, as well as retaining employees of the College. They are defined by a core value of Agility meaning they can quickly adapt to the changing needs of the healthcare community. The table below provides an overview of staffing and student figures.

In 2011, Cox College implemented a strategic plan to help guide the college through the next three years. The plan is organized using Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) specific to each of the college pillars: Educational Programs, Customer Experience, Workforce Experience, Business Practices and Systematic Assessment. The 2011-2013 Strategic Plan indentifies the KPI by Pillar and includes a target and stretch goal that will be reevaluated on an annual basis for appropriateness and progress. In addition, there are four cost centers that roll up to the College: Bookstore, Library, CoxHealth Education Center, and the College.

physicians and their patients since 1985. It is the flagship of the system and offers tertiary services such as cardiovascular services (including open heart surgery), neurosciences, pediatric services, and many more. In 2010, Cox South opened a new emergency department, and in 2012, it was designated as a Level 1 trauma center. This new patient tower will connect to Cox South’s existing tower and will house a Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a Neuroscience Hospital, and will include room for future expansion. The growing campus includes many physician offices, and numerous other special services. Cox North was the original site of the 1906 opening of Burge Hospital, which has become CoxHealth. The facility has over 1,100 employees that help operate the hospital and its numerous clinics.
