President

The third president of Charleston Southern University (CSU) will assume leadership at the launching point for its next significant phase of growth and maturity. Both the university and surrounding community are experiencing dynamic growth. Charleston Southern is a faith-based liberal arts university and is South Carolina's largest accredited, independent university, enrolling approximately 3,600 students, with a goal to reach 4,000 students by 2020. The university's vision is to be nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving. The university recently completed its 10-year reaffirmation of accreditation through the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There were zero recommendations for improvement. This achievement is the epitome of excellence in teaching and learning. Beyond the classroom, CSU’s experiential learning initiative (ELI) provides students with enriched educational opportunities via internships, practicums, clinicals, field courses and other real-world application of classroom theory. Students participate in 38 campus organizations including academic clubs, community service, intramural athletics and campus ministries. The university offers intercollegiate athletics with approximately 400 student-athletes competing in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference, fielding 16 men’s and women’s teams. CSU is located on 300 acres strategically nestled in the heart of the Charleston Tri-County area. The university was recognized as one of the 50 Most Beautiful Christian Colleges and Universities, according to Christian Universities Online. Over the last 30 years, the university has invested $90 million in capital projects. CSU operates today with solid financials and the prospect of sufficient resources to fulfill God’s call. This strong foundation and positive trajectory will provide the next president the opportunity to lead CSU in becoming one of the country's great Christian universities. The university is seeking a dynamic, spiritually and intellectually mature leader committed to its founding principles, mission and biblical core values. The president should possess a comprehensive understanding of and an appreciation for CSU's Baptist heritage and the integration of faith in learning, leading and serving. The president must commit to becoming a member of a local S.C. Baptist Convention church and affirm the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The president must have an understanding of the higher education landscape and the challenges that are on the horizon nationally and globally. The leader must possess a terminal degree and a successful record of higher education administration or executive experience necessary to lead a complex institution. The next president should be committed to fundraising initiatives for the university, utilizing skills to cultivate key donor relationships and accomplish significant fundraising campaigns. The next leader must possess an understanding of higher education finance and the business acumen to make wise decisions based on an understanding of sound principles.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The president must have a vision for and knowledge of NCAA athletics rules and policies, including compliance and student-athlete academic success. Additionally, the university is seeking demonstrated leadership qualities, ability and achievement in the following areas:

Modeling the integration of faith and learning, and encouraging exceptional pedagogy and

scholarship.

Visioning for the future that resonates with the defined culture of CSU while attracting new

students, faculty and partners.

Strategic planning, enrollment management, budgeting and facilities master planning.

Engaging and inspiring alumni to be active participants in the life of the university.

Promoting an institution, building reputation, expanding visibility, fostering community

partnerships and branding its distinctiveness.

Fostering, preserving, and improving a dynamic, innovative educational environment for a

diverse student body.

Identifying, cultivating and developing alumni and donors.

The successful candidate should demonstrate an authentic desire to become part of the CSU

community and build relationships by being approachable and accessible. The president must lead

with vision, clarity, integrity, humility, collaboration and a caring, compassionate heart.

Charleston Southern University, formerly Baptist College at Charleston, is the largest accredited, private university in South Carolina. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the university offers 52 undergraduate degrees, 15 graduate degrees and 18 online programs and enrolls approximately 3,600 students. The university has graduated more than 18,000 students in its 50-year history. Charleston Southern University was founded upon the principle that students should have an opportunity for a quality education under the guidance of Christian faculty. The university promotes academic excellence in a Christian environment. The urgent need for another college in the Lowcountry became a matter of active and organized consideration in 1953. South Carolina Baptists made its establishment a matter of official deliberation at a meeting of the General Board in September 1954. After securing sufficient funds 10 years later, The Baptist College at Charleston started in 1964. After considerable study by official education committees, both locally and convention wide, the Capital Needs Committee of the State Convention brought a recommendation which initiated efforts to begin seeking both a site and funds for the establishment of a college. The campus is located 16 miles from the City of Charleston within the city limits of North Charleston. The institution changed its name to Charleston Southern University in 1990 to reflect the offering of graduate programs.
