Connecting Richmond to the World.

Welcome! The Richmond Forum has a long and rich

history of presenting heads of state from around the world. Tonight, we continue that tradition as we welcome President Bill Clinton, Founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States of America.

It’s difficult to believe that last month was the 20th anniversary of President Clinton’s first inauguration. Since leaving office in 2001, President Clinton has not slowed his pace. His initiatives now span the globe in an effort to make the world a safer, healthier, more sustainable place for all of its inhabitants and a more cooperative community for all of its nations.

Please note that we will not be taking our customary intermission tonight. Instead, after President Clinton’s lecture, we will proceed directly to our Q&A. It will be my privilege to pose questions selected from the many that you submitted in advance of tonight’s program.

As always, on behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, thank you for your support of The Richmond Forum, and we hope that you enjoy this very special evening.

In 2012, Wells Fargo celebrated a milestone anniversary: 160 years of helping customers succeed financially and communities thrive. Since 1852, we have been working hard to keep our customers first—and we will continue to do so as we look ahead to the next 160 years of service.

Wells Fargo & Company is a diversified financial services company providing banking, insurance, investments, mortgage, and consumer and commercial finance right here in Virginia and through more than 9,000 stores, over 12,000 ATMs, and the Internet (wellsfargo.com) across North America and internationally.

One of the Richmond area’s top 10 employers, Wells Fargo is committed to building strong and vibrant communities and making a positive difference where we live and work. With over 3,000 employees in Central Virginia and over 9,400 throughout the Commonwealth, our priorities of customer service and philanthropy remain at the heart of all we do. The more we serve our customers and our communities with the best of our abilities, the stronger we will be.

Wells Fargo promotes economic growth and self-sufficiency, education, social services, the arts, and the environment in thousands of communities. Last year, our local leaders in Central and Eastern Virginia donated over $3 million to local nonprofit agencies through our foundation and bank giving. In addition to our philanthropic investments, our team members generously give their time to volunteer in our communities.

This past September, team members across Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. participated in the Feed the Need initiative and volunteered at local hunger-related non-profit organizations. Team

members in Central Virginia logged over 10,000 volunteer hours and personally donated over $1.6 million to non-profits of their choice as part of the company’s annual Community Support and United Way Campaign.

Now more than ever, Wells Fargo is supporting its customers during these difficult times by helping them keep their homes, growing small businesses, and supporting our communities. We want to help all our customers succeed financially and create long-term economic growth and quality of life for everyone in our communities. Together, we will go far!

solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. So far, more than 2,100 Clinton Global Initiative commitments have improved the lives of 400 million people in 180 nations.

In addition to his Foundation work, President Clinton has joined with former President George H.W. Bush three times—after the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008— to help raise money for recovery efforts, as well as with President George W. Bush in Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. The Clinton Foundation also supports economic growth, job creation, and sustainability in Haiti.

President Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. He and his wife, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, have one daughter, Chelsea, and live in Chappaqua, New York.

William Jefferson Clinton, the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice, led the United States to the longest economic expansion in American history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs.

After leaving the White House, President Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote healthier childhoods, and protect the environment by fostering partnerships among governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and private citizens to turn good intentions into measurable results. Today, the Foundation has staff and volunteers around the world working to improve lives through several initiatives, including the Clinton Health Access Initiative, which is helping 4.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS access lifesaving drugs. The Clinton Climate Initiative, the Clinton Development Initiative, and the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative—are applying a business-oriented approach to fight climate change worldwide and to promote sustainable economic growth in Africa and Latin America. In the U.S., the Foundation is working to combat the alarming rise in childhood obesity through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and is helping individuals and families succeed and to increase small business growth in underserved communities through the Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative. Established in 2005, the Clinton Global Initiative brings together global leaders to devise and implement innovative

The Richmond Youth Jazz Guild brings jazz and acoustic-music performance back into the lives of young people—and that’s just what its founder, Ashby Anderson, intends. Anderson, a jazz composer, pianist, educator, and social entrepreneur, created the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild in 2008, bringing to life his goal of ensuring that great American acoustic jazz music lives on and passes from generation to generation.

Weekly ensemble workshops introduce the students to the creative world of jazz. Working in an actual ensemble gives students a place to increase their music knowledge and inspire and improve their improvisation skills.

The last five years have been very busy for the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild. The Guild has hosted consecutive summer jazz camps, presented master classes with jazz professionals, produced workshops for aspiring young composers, recorded and produced CDs, and participated in national competitions. These competitions include the Downbeat Student Music Awards and the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Competition at Lincoln Center. Students have

also had the rare opportunities to perform with jazz legends Frank Foster, Trombone Shorty, Wynton Marsalis, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The Richmond Youth Jazz Guild is a member of the Berklee City Music Network, a national consortium of community music organizations. This non-profit initiative harnesses the energy of contemporary music to provide music education to fourth through twelfth graders in underserved communities. Students gain access to online music education and have the opportunity to receive scholarships to Berklee College of Music.

In 2011, the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild was proud to have its first student awarded a full four-year scholarship to Berklee College of Music. In 2012, two students were awarded scholarships to attend Berklee’s Five-Week Summer Performance Camp, and one student was awarded a full scholarship to attend Grammy Camp in Los Angeles.

Tonight’s musical performance is made possible by the generous support of Moore Cadillac Company.

George Washington (1789-1797)

“To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.”

John Adams (1797-1801)

“I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.”

Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809)

“That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves.”

James Madison (1809-1817)

“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.”

James Monroe (1817-1825)

“Preparation for war is a constant stimulus to suspicion and ill will.”

John Quincy Adams (1825-1829)

“May our country be always successful, but whether successful or otherwise, always right.”

Andrew Jackson (1829-1837)

“Internal improvement and the diffusion of knowledge, so far as they can be promoted by the constitutional acts of the Federal Government, are of high importance.”

Martin Van Buren (1837-1841)

“As to the Presidency, the two happiest days

of my life were those of my entrance upon the office and my surrender of it.”

William Henry Harrison (1841)

“The prudent capitalist will never adventure his capital . . . if there exists a state of uncertainty as to whether the Government will repeal tomorrow what it has enacted today.”

John Tyler (1841-1845)

“Wealth can only be accumulated by the earnings of industry and the savings of frugality.”

A comprehensive portrait of any United States President cannot be captured completely in a single quote. In looking back on the words of those who have held the highest office in the land, however, we found recurring statements of deeply held convictions, as well as stances on issues that we still debate today.

One of the few things William Henry Harrison accomplished as President (before dying on his 32nd day in office) was to sit for a photographic portrait on his Inauguration Day in 1841. Unfortunately, the present location of that portrait is not known. The earliest extant photograph of a U.S. president is this daguerreotype likeness of former President John Quincy Adams (above), taken in 1843 when Adams was 76.

James Knox Polk (1845-1849)

“There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress…than I had any conception [of ], before I became President of the U.S.”

Zachary Taylor (1849-1850)

“For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory…”

Millard Filmore (1850-1853)

“It is not strange…to mistake change for progress.”

Franklin Pierce (1853-1857)

“The storm of frenzy and faction must inevitably dash itself in vain against the unshaken rock of the Constitution.”

James Buchanan (1857-1861)

“To avoid entangling alliances has been a maxim of our policy ever since the days of Washington, and its wisdoms no one will attempt to dispute.”

Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865)

“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”

Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)

“If the rabble were lopped off at one end and the aristocrat at the other, all would be well with the country.”

Ulysses Simpson Grant (1869-1877)

“I have never advocated war except as a means of peace.”

Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1877-1881)

“Nothing brings out the lower traits of human nature like office seeking.”

This 1846 daguerreotype is the earliest extant photograph of a sitting U.S. President, James K. Polk. Polk, his family, and his cabinet were extensively photographed in office.

Abraham Lincoln sat for well over 100 portraits, before becoming President and while in office, the last being this March 6, 1865 photograph, made by Henry F. Warren, on the balcony of the White House. This is one of two seated poses that day. A third—a standing pose—was recorded but has never been discovered.

James Abram Garfield (1881)

“Whoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and commerce.”

Chester Alan Arthur (1881-1885)

“If it were not for the reporters, I would tell you the truth.”

Steven Grover Cleveland (1885-1889,

1893-1897)

“It is the responsibility of the citizens to support their government. It is not the responsibility of the government to support its citizens.”

Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)

“We Americans have no commission from God to police the world.”

William McKinley (1897-1901)

“Unlike any other nation, here the people rule, and their will is the supreme law. It is sometimes

sneeringly said by those who do not like free government, that here we count heads. True, heads are counted, but brains also . . .”

Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

William Howard Taft (1909-1913)

“The intoxication of power rapidly sobers off in the knowledge of its restrictions and under the prompt reminder of an ever-present and not always considerate press, as well as the kindly suggestions that not infrequently come from Congress.”

Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921)

“Some people call me an idealist. Well, that is the way I know I am an American.”

One in a series of portraits taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston of President William McKinley in 1898. He stands by his desk in his office at the White House. The blurred figure of a clerk can be seen moving in the back right corner of the room.

President William Howard Taft presented his massive figure to photographer A. Chickering in a 1908 sitting. The President is sporting an equally massive buffalo coat, worn perhaps in his high-speed motor outings.

Warren Gamliel Harding (1921-1923)

“Our most dangerous tendency is to expect too much of government, and at the same time do for it too little.”

John Calvin Coolidge (1923-1929)

“Don’t expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong.”

Herbert Clark Hoover (1929-1933)

“A splendid storehouse of integrity and freedom has been bequeathed to us by our forefathers. In this day of confusion, of peril to liberty, our high duty is to see that this storehouse is not robbed of its contents.”

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933-1945)

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much, it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.”

Harry S. Truman (1945-1953)

“We need not fear the expression of ideas—we do need to fear their suppression.”

Dwight David Eisenhower (1953-1961)

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1961-1963)

“If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”

Lyndon Baines Johnson (1963-1969)

“If government is to serve any purpose it is to do for others what they are unable to do for themselves.”

Richard Milhous Nixon (1969-1974)

“The American dream does not come to those who fall asleep.”

Gerald Rudolph Ford (1974-1977)

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.”

James Earl Carter, Jr. (1977-1981)

“The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worthy of emulation.”

Ronald Wilson Reagan (1981-1989)

“America is too great for small dreams.”

George Herbert Walker Bush (1989-1993)

“If anyone tells you that America’s best days are behind her, they’re looking the wrong way.”

William Jefferson Clinton (1993-2001)

“There is nothing wrong in America that can’t be fixed with what is right in America.”

George Walker Bush (2001-2009)

“Recognizing and confronting our history is important. Transcending our history is essential. We are not limited by what we have done, or what we have left undone. We are limited only by what we are willing to do.”

Barack Hussein Obama (2009 to present)

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

Our first president, George Washington, selected the site for the White House in 1791. The cornerstone was laid in 1792, and a competition design submitted by Irish-born architect James Hoban was chosen. President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved into the unfinished house in 1800, after eight years of construction. During the War of 1812, the British set fire to the President’s House in 1814. James Hoban was appointed to rebuild the house, and President James Monroe moved into the building in 1817. During Monroe’s administration, the South Portico was constructed in 1824, and Andrew Jackson oversaw the addition of the North Portico in 1829. During the late 19th century, various proposals were made to expand the President’s House significantly or to build an entirely new house for the president, but these plans were never realized.

At various times in history, the White House has been known as the “President’s Palace,” the “President’s House,” and the “Executive Mansion.” President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901.

In 1902, Roosevelt began a major renovation of the White House, including the relocation of the President’s offices from the second floor of the Residence to the newly constructed temporary Executive Office Building (now known as the West Wing). The Roosevelt renovation was planned and

carried out by the famous New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. Roosevelt’s successor, President William Howard Taft, had the Oval Off ice constructed within an enlarged office wing.

Less than fifty years after the Roosevelt renovation, the White House was showing signs of serious structural weakness. President Harry S. Truman began a renovation of the building in which everything but the outer walls was dismantled. The reconstruction was overseen by architect Lorenzo Winslow, and the Truman family moved back into the White House in 1952.

Every president since John Adams has occupied the White House, and the history of this building extends far beyond the construction of its walls. From the Ground Floor Corridor rooms, transformed from their early use as service areas, to the State Floor rooms, where countless leaders and dignitaries have been entertained, the White House is the home of the President of the United States and his family, a museum of American history, and a place where history continues to unfold.

There are 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 levels in the Residence. There are also 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators.

The White House kitchen is able to serve dinner to as many as 140 guests and hors d’oeuvres to more than 1,000.

Trinity Episcopal School Student Ushers

Trinity Episcopal School advocates service to one’s community as an important aspect of individual character development and the creation of a strong community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as ushers for The Richmond Forum this season. Through their service, the students facilitate an exchange of ideas that

broadens our understanding of the trends and issues shaping our lives and our community.

American Spirit

March 9, 2013

Dr. Jane Goodall

Making a DifferenceApril 13, 2013

On January 8, 2011, Mark Kelly was preparing to command the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour when he learned that his wife, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, had been terribly wounded in an assassination attempt. Kelly’s dedication to family and Giffords’ difficult road to recovery would captivate the nation. Personifying the best of the American spirit, Kelly is a homegrown hero who was a combat pilot in Iraq and astronaut on five space shuttle missions, and Giffords was an ascendant American leader who pledges to return someday to public service. Captain Kelly will be joined by Gabrielle Giffords for a very special and memorable Richmond Forum exclusive.
