Michael was raised on a farm in Iowa and in 1969 graduated from Carson High School After high school Michael became a volunteer fireman for The Marengo Fire Department and continued that venture for the following five years He attended Kirkwood College in 1973 and graduated with an AS degree in science In 1975 he entered Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa While at Palmer he became a Chiropractic and Radiology Intern prior to graduation in 1978In 1978 Dr Masteller took the state board in Colorado at Spears Chiropractic Hospital in Denver Colorado He traveled throughout Colorado looking for a place to open a new practice He settled in Longmont Colorado and opened a practice thereIn 1983 Dr Masteller purchased a ranch in Larimer County and began raising Black Angus

Cattle and continued this business until 1995 at which time he sold 119 head of cattle and retired from the cattle businessIn 1988 Dr Masteller built a new Chiropractic Clinic by Longmont United Hospital and started hiring associates at that timeIn 1988 Dr Masteller started the Orthopedic Program sponsored by Southern University Health Science Center in Whittier California (LACC) and received his Diplomate 1991 In 1997 he attended classes for Pain Management at UCLA and in 1998 took a certification examination and became certified as a Diplomate in Pain Management

In 1991 Dr Masteller was elected President of The Colorado Chiropractic Association after traveling through the chairsIn 1996 Dr Masteller was Vice President of The Lyons Kiwanis Club and took a survey of the Town of Lyons on what were the three most important things the citizens wanted in Lyons The response was a Medical Facility Pharmacy and a larger Grocery Store That year he bought land and built a new Pharmacy hired pharmacists and kept it until 2004 when he sold itIn 1990 Dr Masteller was asked to join The Lyons Police Department as a reserve officer which he did after attending The Boulder County Sheriffs Police Academy and continued through 1996 at which time he received an outstanding service awardAlso in 1997 while on a ski vacation in Winter Park Colorado Dr Masteller stopped in Winter Park to have coffee in an old train car located on Main Street Just so happens they were going out of business and since he had an extra lot next to The Pharmacy he purchased The Pullman Dining Car He had to have it brought down the winding side of the road to Winter Park all the way to Lyons Colorado He made this car into a coffee and gift shopIn 1998 Dr Masteller was appointed to The Board of Chiropractic Examiners by then Governor Roy RomerDr Masteller is committed to protect this profession and felt it was time that he returned to his involvement during these trying times in healthcare and to assure that Chiropractic always has it place at the table when insurance decisions are made He is open for suggestions or concerns from the profession and feels that the current CCA Board has the ability to make great strides this year not only legislatively but changing insurance issues for the betterment of Chiropractic in Colorado

One of the most problematic and difficult injuries that I have seen in my career as an injury lawyer is a pain syndrome known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS CRPS occurs when the nervous system becomes highly sensitized to normal stimulus and even light touch becomes extremely painful It can develop after a traumatic injury or a nerve injury and can be very difficult to assess I asked Giancarlo Checa MD a pain physician with a sub-specialty in CRPS to write about the warning signs and treatment of CRPS and when a referral to a pain management specialist is appropriate He gave the following account of one of his patients a teenage boy named Ryan

Ryan a fourteen year old boy accompanied by his mother presented to the University Pain Clinic with a complaint of left knee pain Ryanrsquos mother describes a pain history that began when Ryan was twelve after a school dodge ball game During the game he landed ldquofunnyrdquo on his knee which led to severe sharp localized pain He was seen by his pediatrician the next day who encountered no significant findings on physical exam but who referred Ryan to an orthopedic specialist The orthopedistrsquos exam too was negative but he sent Ryan for an MRI The MRI indicated that there was no evidence of a bone or soft tissue injury

Ryan continued to experience significant knee pain and tried physical therapy narcotics NSAIDS and eventually surgery (during which no abnormalities were found) to address the pain Ryan was unable to run or walk without significant pain and he began to fall behind in school and exhibit signs of significant depression His parents were at a loss as to how to comfort him or help him deal with his pain As his parents continued to pursue specialist referrals Ryan acquired diagnoses of knee pain pain of unknown etiology psycho-somatic pain and malingering

When Ryan presented to the University Pain Clinic his diagnosis was changed to CRPS-Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome The hallmarks of this syndrome are hypersensitivity and allodynia pain that is out of proportion to the injury pain that is very difficult to control early swelling at the injury site redness or a bluish discoloration skin temperature changes and pain that follows a non-dermatomal pattern

The University Pain Clinic initiated standard CRPS treatment including neuropathic pain medications and pain sympathetic blocks While these interventions granted Ryan some relief the pain control was temporary and incomplete

Ryan eventually received spinal cord stimulator which significantly reduced his perception of pain and the pain remained localized to his left leg Both Ryanrsquos grades and mood began to improve and he was once again able to participate in typical adolescent activities

Not every pain patient needs a pain specialist to help manage their pain However when a patientrsquos pain is not controlled not following a typical pattern or just beyond a practitionerrsquos comfort level it may be time to refer to a specialist Having the correct diagnosis can greatly change a patientrsquos therapy and future prognosis With early intervention diseases including CRPS may be controlled with short term injections or medications When diagnosis and treatment are delayed pain syndromes may become more difficult to treat CRPS may spread from just one extremity to all of the extremities and rarely centrally Should you have questions about CRPS or are concerned a patient may have CRPS please feel free to call Dr Checa

This letter was received by a chiropractor that states he needs to send in $125 in order to comply with Colorado statutes on providing minutes from annual meetings from a chiropractic practice It looks very official and quotes statutes DORA does not send anything like this It looks like a quick scam to get chiropractors to send in $125 to

this company The information provided on the form is public information that the company could have requested to make it look like its a government request This is a scam and you do not need to comply

EDITORIAL Federal Investigation Shooting and Psychiatric Drugs is Overdue

We see in the news that 20 small children and six adults were killed in Newtown Connecticut Will it also be the next act of senseless vio-lence linked to psychiatric treatment- and specifically to psychiatric Drugs

NBC News reports that the 20-year-old shooter Adam Lanza had a history of mental turmoil If Adam Lanza was receiving psychiatric treatment he almost certainly would have been given mind-altering psychiatric drugs The same thing goes for the alleged shooter in the massacre at Aurora Movie Theater here in Colorado

In dozens of cases of mass murder or acts of senseless violence the perpetrators are known to have been under the influence of psychi-atric drugs that have been documented by international regulatory agencies as causing adverse effects that include mania psychosis aggression violence and homicidal thoughts In fact there have been 22 International drug regulatory warnings issued on psychiatric drugs causing violent reactions (httpwwwcchrintorgpsychiatric-drugsdrug_warnings_on_violence)

It is high time the public and public officials demand a federal investi-gation into shootings at schools malls and workplaces and any other acts of senseless violence for links to the mind-altering psychiatric drugs the shooters have taken There is more than enough evidence to merit an investigation and countless innocent lives are at stake

New York has proposed a Bill to Report Violent CrimesSuicides Committed by Persons Using Psy-chotropic Drugs There is a large body of scientific research establishing a connection between violence and suicide and the use of psychotropic drugs in some cases

The Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza was a product of the mental health system and had been taking ldquomedicationrdquo since the age of ten and reportedly seeing a psychiatrist from at least the age of 15 hellipthe LARGE QUESTION IS How many times does this scenario have to play out before law-makers finally acknowledge that the supporting data already exists and to date has been repeatedly and deliberately been ignored Between 1998 and 2012 fourteen schools shooting occurred taking the lives of 58 and wounding 109 All fourteen of those shooters were taking or withdrawing from a psychiatric drug and seven of them had been under the ldquocarerdquo of a psychiatrist or psychologist

James Holmes the suspected perpetrator of the July 20 2012 mass shooting in a movie theatre in Aurora CO was seeing psychiatrist Lynne Fenton yet no mention has been made of what psychiat-ric drugs he had been prescribed

Antidepressants are at the top of the list of the drugs indicated in these shooting including Prozac Trazadone Effexor Celexa and Luvox to name a few

Consider that 11 of the US population over the age of 12 is taking at least one anti-depressant and nine out of ten children who visit a child psychiatrist leave with a prescription for a mind-altering drug and even more outrageous 1 in 70 preschoolers are taking a psychiatric drug These are the same drugs named in studies warning not to be used with children

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are being diagnosed as Mentally Ill and hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent and more is being asked for to help cure this problem Ask these questions Who is saying you are Mentally Ill Who is prescribing the drugs Who is asking for the Appropria-tions and Funding from the Government Who is making the profit from these lies Who is getting no help and killed

Prof Thomas Szasz MD Professor of Psychiatry wrote ldquoIf some doctors harm-torture rather than treat murder the soul rather than minister the body-that is in part because society through the state asks them and pays them to do sordquo Think about it An investigation into Psychiatric Drugs needs to be made at a Federal Level and we must all push for this to happen Gun control with more psychiatric testing and medicating as a solution is like pour-ing gasoline on the fire

Warning Any one wishing to discontinue psychiatric drugs is cautioned to do so only under the su-pervision of a competent medical doctor because of potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms

Letrsquos Talk About Patientrsquos Money and Doctorrsquos Compliance

When I am talking with doctors about their compliance I find many doctors are concerned or uncomfortable when talking to their patients about money This is especially true when dealing with patients who are near to maintenancewellness care or who have exhausted their insurance benefits The patient still wants care and the patient still want someone else to foot the bill

Dr Sid Williams - founder of Life UniversityChiropractic Legend Dr Sid Williams died Thursday morning December 27 due to complications from pneumonia

Dr Sid Williams was born in Rome Georgia on March 18 1928 His early life met with much athletic success landing the young Sid a football scholarship to Georgia Tech An injury on the field that medical doctors failed to fix led the acclaimed athlete to a chiropractor and served as a catalyst to his monumental career

After finishing a bachelors of science degree in industrial management from the Georgia Tech Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa became his next stop with college sweetheart and new bride Nell Williams Dr Sid Williams and Dr Nell Williams graduated from chiropractic college in 1956 with diplomas in hand they returned to Austell Georgia

to open a chiropractic practice Their success turned into 19 chiropractic clinics covering the southeastern United States

1964 marked Dr Sid Williams assent to stardom in the Chiropractic profession with the start of the Dynamic Essentials Dynamic Essentials or DE as it later became known offered chiropractic motivational seminars that drew DCs from around the country and Canada Chiropractors staff and their families alike listened to the principled lectures of chiropractic and learning how to spread the word of a growing profession

The success of DE and the related chiropractic business aided Dr Sid and Nell Williams in creating the Life Foundation in 1965 Originally structured as a nonprofit chiropractic

organization dedicated to the purpose of service education and research Early projects included a newspaper with chiropractic patient success stories distributed by chiropractors to their patients Having sites on educating the world about chiropractic The Life Foundation created a public service announcement featuring Robert Goulet published brochures and built the a mobile chiropractic clinic that toured the country called the Health Mobile

From the success and visibility of their other projects Dr Sid Williams along with his wife Dr Nell Williams founded Life Chiropractic College in 1974 The first class of twenty-two students taught by 3 faculty members started in 1975 in rented trailers in Marietta Georgia Over the next 20 years under his leadership Life Chiropractic College became Life University and grew into the largest chiropractic college with an expansive 100 acre campus and more than 3500 students at its peak

After years of empowering the profession Dr Sid Williams was elected the president of the International Chiropractic Association (ICA) in 1982 and that same year reached an agreement with the struggling Pacific States Chiropractic College to establish Life West in California

Dr Sid Williams retired from Life University in 2003 continuing to his spread his vision of Chiropractic until his death at the age of 84
