The portmanteau "mechatronics" was first coined by Mr. Tetsuro Mori, a senior engineer of the Japanese company Yaskawa, in 1969. Mechatronics may alternatively be referred to as "electromechanical systems" or less often as "control and automation engineering".

Why we should adopt mechatronics?

In traditional electromechanical systems approach was to inject more reliability. Then control part gets added to enhance the reliability. Less use of computer systems i.e. Sequential design approach (not integrated approach).Because electrical and electronic systems are developing very rapidly and they have fantastic features, interfacing and applications. E.g. electrical machines, semiconductor devices, power devices, microprocessors, microcontrollers, embedded systems, digital control systems, data communication networks, process controllers, etc. Advent combination of computer hardware and software. These electrical and electronic systems can be integrated with mechanical systems and processes.

• Control Design and Implementation is still the domainof the specialist.

• Controls and Electronics are still viewed as afterthoughtadd-ons.

• Very few practicing engineers perform any kind ofphysical and mathematical modeling.

• Mathematics is a subject that is not viewed as enhancing one’s engineering skills but as an obstacle to avoid.

• Very few engineers have the balance between analysisand hardware essential for success in Mechatronics.
