and Annual Meeting
Ancient Hunters and the Great Inland Seas:
9,000 Years of Submerged Prehistory
Shipwreck research isn’t the only underwater archeology
being conducted on the Great Lakes. Dr. John O’Shea’s
research explores the potential human occupation of the
Alpena-Amberely Ridge in central Lake Huron. During a
period of low lake levels, the ridge would have been a
natural migration route for caribou, therefore a logical
hunting ground for humans. Join us to learn about the
research taking place to explore these exciting possibilities.
Dr. John O’Shea is professor of
anthropology and curator of
Great Lakes archaeology in the
Museum of Anthropological
Archaeology at the University
of Michigan. His research is
also split between conventional
land-based archaeology and
underwater investigations of
submerged prehistoric sites and
historic shipwrecks.
Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 1pm At the Toledo Club

There’s More to Come
with Museum on the Move!
Detroit River Tour 2015
2015 was the inaugural year of our Museum on the
Move program. We hoped to introduce our members to
new experiences on the Great Lakes and to introduce
our organization to new people in the Great Lakes
region. We took you on a tour of the Cleveland Harbor
aboard the Holiday in the spring of 2015 and then a
tour of the Detroit River aboard the Diamond Jack in
the fall. We’ve also shown our new documentary A
Good Ship and Crew Well Seasoned: The Fitzgerald and Her
Legacy in Rocky River, Ohio and at the Erie Maritime Muse-
um in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Thank you to everyone who traveled with us to explore
the Great Lakes. We look forward to taking you on
many more adventures!
Based on the interest in the program from its inaugural
year, we are planning some new experiences across the
Great Lakes for our members and friends in 2016.
Along with our Jet Express Trips and our Soo Locks Bus
Tour, we will be having two programs later in the year.
Details are subject to change.
Historical Tour of Marblehead Peninsula: August
2016
-Marblehead Lighthouse, Lafarge Quarry, Lunch at
the Catawba Island Club and a tour of Johnson’s Island.
Detroit River Tour: September 2016
-A trip aboard the Diamond Jack with lunch delivery
by the J W Wescott II, the only floating post office in the

explores the less documented and overlooked history of the
Fitzgerald and her crew before their tragic loss through
unpublished manuscript material and photographs while at
the same time reflecting on the impact of their loss on family,
friends and collogues in the maritime community. The film
takes a refreshing break from debating the possible cause of
her loss in order to direct more time to those important
historical questions not yet asked.

by Bruce Lynn and Christopher Winters
$50.00 (Members $45.00) Four decades after the Edmund Fitzgerald vanished from the radar screen of the trailing steamer,
Arthur M. Anderson, the largest ship ever lost on the Great Lakes continues to inspire our
capacity for wonder and grief.
Great Lakes photojournalist, Chris Winters, and Bruce Lynn,
Executive Director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical
Society, have assembled a comprehensive look at the life and
the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald . Brimming with rare
archival material from GLSHS’s collection and over 250
photographs of the ship above and below the surface, The
Legend Lives On explores the haunting legacy of this vanished
“Queen of the Lakes.”

called the largest merger of Great Lake vessels since the formation of Pittsburgh
Steamship Company a few years earlier. This 132-page volume is a large-format,
soft-cover, coffee table-style book that tells the company’s history using historical,
personal and topical vignettes, as well as hundreds of images of people, boats and
