The Snohomish County Bar AssociationAnnual Dinner

Saturday, May 3, 2014 5:00 p.m.

Rosehill Community Center in downtown Mukilteo

This past Sunday was a momentous occasion in my family. Wedding bells rang, our glasses filled to overflowing with joy and champagne, two families joined together by my eldest step-daughter and now son-in-law uniting in marriage. My step-daughter looked stunning in her pure white gown, glowing from her expression of love and the emotion of the moment. My new son-in-law was beaming his own pride and happiness as they stood before each other expounding on how their lives have come together. The wedding took place at my house, and although the decorations and planning came together under my step-daughter’s critical eye for detail, it was truly a group effort in the weeks leading up to, and on the day of the event. My sweet little daughter and her cousin were bursting with pride at being able to be included in the ceremony as the flower girls in their matching white dresses. My sister-in-law, ever the professional, took the pictures that will remind the couple of the magic of this moment for years to come. My son-in-law’s family provided and took care of all the food preparations. My wife was on video duty recording the whole ceremony and sniffling throughout it as she watched her eldest daughter move into a new phase in her life! Even I was in on the action, as I had been asked, to my great honor, to officiate the ceremony. I spoke my words of wisdom, (and yes, I am rolling my eyes at that statement just as much as you are), reminding the family members present at the intimate ceremony that they have all contributed in some way to this milestone in the young couple’s lives. I also reminded the couple that marriage is something you have to work at and remember to not take the other for granted along the way. The moment reminded me that the transition into new beginnings was not the only one for me this month. Over the course of the past year, I have had the great opportunity and honor to serve you, our members, of our local bar association. I want to take this opportunity to thank-you, all of you, for trusting me to act on your behalf to the best of my abilities. However, as in most things life has to throw at you, the work of the past year has not been of a singular effort. I have had the good fortune to work with some of the hardest working people – your Board of Trustees. These individuals volunteer their time and expend countless hours in board meetings, committee

meetings, planning events/CLEs, and trying to come up with more ways the bar association can help to benefit you as its membership and not let you down. For the tireless efforts they have provided, I thank and commend them. I look forward to the next year as I take on the new role of past president to help the future leadership serve you to the best of our capabilities. Humbly yours, Will Steffener

Tesla: Clarifications and RetractionsMea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa.

Last month, I dashed off the dispatch for this column without considering there may be someone in the bar that has more experience with the Tesla car than me. My errors were quickly pointed out.

Jeff Donchez, a member of our local bar, wrote to me to shortly after last month’s column was published. Jeff has owned a Tesla since February 2011 and is thrilled with it. Here is what he wrote to me about the specifics. My comments are added in italics.

1. At 220 volts with a 40 amp charge, the car charges at about 25 miles per hour. It only takes an overnight charge if the battery is depleted. I think this means it takes an hour of charging from the outlet your clothes dryer uses to get 25 miles of driving.

2. The rated ranges, either 230 miles or 300 miles are actually EPA ratings. The reality is they are about 10% too high. So, the 230 mile model (60 KW battery) has a range of 205-210 miles (less if the weather is below freezing. EPA ratings are always too high.

3. You can plug the car in outdoors. Once the car is locked, it cannot be unplugged or driven. This is good to hear.

4. The regenerative braking does add some juice back to the battery but nothing appreciable. It mostly runs the accessories.

5. It is my understanding that one can drive from the Canadian border to the Mexican border using supercharging stations exclusively.

6. I agree that there is minimal interior storage but there is a glove box. You just didn’t find it. There is also under floor storage in the rear compartment. My vision has never been good.

7. The entertainment system is in the display screen along with all controls for the car. The upgraded sound system is pretty impressive.

8. You did not mention that the transportation safety board rated the Tesla as the safest car on the road. It can’t be rolled due to low CG and the roof crush test broke the machine designed to crush the roof. Jeff sent me a link showing this safety

rating has been reaffirmed. 9. Tesla’s are fast and quiet. You should drive one.

Yeah, I should, but how do you get it out of the second floor of the Bell Square Mall?

10. And, finally, you are correct - no emissions. I have owned a Tesla since last February and it is an impressive piece of engineering. The icing on the cake is my carbon footprint to operate it is zero.

I should also add Jeff sent me a story reporting there is now a supercharger in Ellensburg so those heading to Spokane should have no worries, except when you get there.

My cousin and her husband own a Nissan Leaf and live in Spokane. When I saw them last summer, they reported there are four known charging stations in Spokane, and one of those is in their garage. These are not the superquick stations that dot I-5 and are now in Ellensburg. Instead, these are just your regular stations of which we have plenty in Seattle. Perhaps they are at the 220 volts Jeff referenced in #1 above.

If I do the math right, and presume it is 200 miles from Spokane to Ellensburg, that means an 8 hour charge.

Spokane is a nice town. Enjoy your stay.

Happy New Year Everyone!

As the Chair for the Social Committee for the Bar Association, I wanted to give you a “heads-up” on the activities that we have planned for 2014. First, look for a special (and free) opportunity in your email for the end of February. On April 3rd, we will be having an Ex-Parte event at a local law firm. May 3rd is our Annual Dinner at the Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo (Elvis will be in the building!). We are bringing back the FREE Everett Aquasox Game at Memorial Stadium on July 18th (this includes a ticket to the game, a meal and non-alcoholic beverage). August 22nd is the Annual Golf Tournament at the Walter Hall golf course. September brings another Ex Parte event and our 2nd Annual Day of Caring with the United Way of Snohomish County.

Don’t forget we have our Annual General Meeting on Friday, January 31st from 12-1:30pm at the Majestic Café. Judge Weiss will be our guest speaker. Please contact Joyce Wood for reservations.

If you have a suggestion for an event or activity that you would like the Bar Association to host, please contact me (Ann Brice 425.252.0797) or Joyce Wood. We are always looking for great ideas and want to be responsive to your needs and interests.
