01tHe Briff in Brief
Cosmopolis. From 20 to 29 June, Brussels welcomes the BRIFF and the very eclectic world of cinema . By welcoming Emilie Dequenne and Bouli Lanners, it pays tribute to two immeasurable talents of Belgian cinema . By inviting “The Artist” Michel Hazanavicius, it proves that Europe is doing well. Very well, actually. And, it is recognized around the globe for its audacity and its creativity, as illustrated by the selection of films of the Directors’ Week. By proposing an international competition, it creates a borderless section and, at the same time, offers the most famous Lieutenant of New York Abel Ferrara , the opportunity to present a retros-pective of his work. It is a wonderful platform for this important representative of disruptive American filmmaking. Also other artists, filmmakers, actresses and actors are given carte blanche during the festival. For ten days, the BRIFF shows the unique and bustling atmosphere of the city in the Brussels cinema’s!

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The International Competition highlights a cinema for all, with emotional stories that question the world. A section that embraces the diversity of cinema and its audiences with a selection of films that addresses strong and sensitive subjects, which will resonate with all of us.
For the 2019 edition, the International Competition offers fiction and documentary films that map out family chronicles, dive into political regimes, dream of pacifist utopias, flirt with a fantasy world, that are surrounded by shattered traditions, mujahidin, voodoo and the mafia. Films that tell the story of our past and present from China, Afghanistan, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Palestine, Ireland, Brazil and Macedonia, presenting promising alongside seasoned directors in an almost perfect gender parity.

Edition 2019They are German, French, Dutch, Lithuanian and Swedish, and a balanced selec-tion of four men and four women. The Directors’ Week mainly shows the first and second achievements of the directors who were discovered at Locarno, Toronto, Berlin, Rotterdam and Cannes. They are about love, violence, sex, refrigerators, melancholy, capitalism, stuffed animals, lost innocence, frightening children’s songs, forgotten dreams and lucid nightmares. Selected by the directors of the ARRF, the films defy the expectations of genres and opinions, while they each adopt a unique world view. A discovery through the newest authors’ cinema.

IT MUST BE HEAVEN by Elia SuleimanFrance, Palestine - 97’ - 2019
ES escapes from Palestine seeking an alternative homeland, only to find that Palestine is trailing behind him. The promise of a new life turns into a comedy of errors: however far he travels, from Paris to New York, something always reminds him of home. From award-winning director Elia Suleiman, a comic saga exploring identity, nationality and belonging, in which Suleiman asks the fundamental question: where is the place we can truly call home?

06off-pro-GramABEL FERRARA
What if the camera was a natural extension of your hand? Abel Ferrara was brought up with film and started shooting amateur 8 mm films during his high school years. He was only 25 years old when he made his first feature, the highly controversial Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy, for which he worked with a number of people who would remain in his entourage for decades: composer Joe Delia and screenwriter Nicholas St. John. Abel and the Big Apple: it’s a love story that the filmmaker shares with public and critics alike, from The Driller Killer to ’R Xmas, and including The Funeral, China Girl, The King of New York, and The Addiction (nominated for the Golden Bear in Berlin in 1995). Meet the New York vigilante par excellence thanks to the BRIFF!

EMILIE DEQUENNE
Happy Birthday Emilie ! Thanks to her aunt who noticed the ad in a newspaper, Emilie Dequenne went to the casting call for Rosetta. Almost as determined as the main character, she earned the title role, at only 17 years-old. The fairy tale was only beginning: she received the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 for her performance. 20 years later, The Girl on the Train, La Fille du RER, is honouring us with her presence at the BRIFF, to blow the candles of the first success of her acting career and of the Palme d’Or for Rosetta, surrounded by Fabrizio Rongione and the Dardenne Brothers. In addition, she is offering us an amazing gift: the best of her filmography.

GREEN PLANET – CARTE BLANCHE À BOULI LANNERS
No future? Does the classic Punk slogan define what’s in store for our world? Bouli Lanners begs to differ and provides a wake-up call. In the face of climate changes and the dangers inherent in nuclear power, the actor-director from Liège presents four films that are meant to get us to react immediately. Animation, fiction, documentary and short, all genres are appropriate when it’s about saving our world.

VIRGIL VERNIER
With fourteen films, of which six feature-length ones, Virgil Vernier has made a name for himself as one of the most exciting French filmmakers of the moment. Freely navigating between fiction and documentary, he is involved in a unique exploration of hypermodernity and the world today. Virgil Vernier’s presence at BRIFF will be an opportunity to discuss his latest film Sofia Antipolis (in the Directors’ Week competition) as well as several of his previous films.

LA FLOR
After selections at the Locarno, Toronto and Rotterdam film festivals, La Flor is certainly the largest and most successful film project that has emerged from Argentina in recent years. This monumental project with a length of 886 minutes (including breaks) took no less than 10 years to complete! A unique and unforgettable film experience that will take you through stories of espionage, musical break-ups and lots of beautiful Argentinean landscapes.
