Message from Mayor Sam Katz

As the Mayor of Winnipeg, it is with great enthusiasm that I extend my congratulations to the Shelley Shearer School of Dance on the occasion of your 25th anniversary season. I am certain that your ‘Kids Helping Kids’ performance will serve to commemorate this significant occasion.

The Shelley Shearer School of Dance has trained thousands of dancers in the past 25 years and graduates of this school are highly sought after and employed by dance companies, musical theatre productions, cruise lines, and by film and television companies from around the world.

By providing Winnipeg with high quality performances over the past 25 years, the Shelley Shearer School of Dance has contributed greatly to our City’s artistic identity and and cultural community.

I would like to commend the Shelley Shearer School of Dance for celebrating their 25th anniversary by raising funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Our City has a reputation as one of the most caring in the nation; Winnipeggers step up to the plate to assist those who need our support. The efforts of everyone involved are sincerely appreciated and are what help to make Winnipeg a great place to live.

On behalf of the citizens of Winnipeg and my esteemed City Council colleagues, congratulations on all of your success.

Warm regards,

Sam Katz MAYOR

Many years ago, Shelley Shearer-Nelko and I lived our dreams dancing in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. I’ve watched her over the past 25 years live another magnificent dream building and developing her school. I am incredibly proud of the fact that Shelley, my friend and dear colleague has challenged, touched and inspired the lives and dreams of so many of her students over the past years. Through her teaching, she has given an intangible gift of the heart.

I was blessed to have many inspirational teachers over the years and the gifts that they shared with me allowed me to discover not just the ʻstepsʼ but who I was and how my heart flowed. There is nothing quite like dance to open the soul and mind to infinite possibilities. As dancers we enjoy the bliss of body and mind uniting to lift us to a level of the spirit unlike anything else.

As she celebrates this momentous milestone in the history of her school, it touches me even more that she continues to give back to those who face obstacles requiring the deepest sense of courage and strength. I couldn’t be more proud of her achieve-ments and of her generosity.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!

On behalf of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the Shelley Shearer School of Dance for choosing to com-memorate their 25th Anniversary by helping to make brighter, healthier futures for our children.

An incredible amount of time and effort went into putting the ‘Kids Helping Kids’ gala performance together and I would especially like to thank the students, staff , volunteers and committee members who created an evening to warm our hearts, inspire us through dance and showcase what 25 years of performance excellence really means.

As audience members this evening you have the multiple gift of knowing that by being a part of this special performance, you are not only supporting Winnipeg’s emerging stars but also making a significant impact on the health of our children. For that we can’t thank you enough.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to the advancement of knowl-edge and care in the fields of child health and child health research. Our goal is to ensure that kids from across Manitoba, Northwest Ontario, and Nunavut continue to receive the best possible care through new equipment and specialized patient services at Children’s Hospital and life-saving pediatric research at the our Manitoba Institute of Child Health.

All proceeds from this unforgettable evening of live entertainment will be directed to the Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Program of the Child Life Department. The Hospital can sometimes be a frightening place for a child and the music therapy program becomes a positive coping mechanism for young patients, helping to make the hospital a more comfortable place to be as well as giving kids a constructive way to get through sometimes difficult treatments.

My heartfelt thanks to each of you for making this evening so magical.Have a wonderful time and congratulations on 25 years of performance excellence!

Lesia SianchukExecutive Director, Children’s Hospital Foundation

Greetings from the Children’s Hospital Foundation
