Veritas has after 22 years earned the title as South Africa’s most trusted competition for market ready wines and brandies. With just more than 1 740 entries for this year’s competition producers have once again cast their vote for the continued existence of this prominent wine contest. Consumers increasingly take note of the results and adapt their buying behaviour accordingly. A double gold, gold, silver and bronze Veritas sticker on a bottle is indeed a great motivator.

Veritas is a dynamic organisation that has to respond to the challenges faced by the wine industry and my election as the new chairperson of the South African National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) will allow me to channel my passion for the wine industry into generating new growth for this reputable competition. We’d like to focus on more trans-parency of the complete process – from the determining of policy for entries to the judging process. We want to listen and respond to relevant input from all role-players with the aim of securing buy-in. While the inclusion of younger tasters, sommeliers and specialists with a commercial background on the tasting panels will receive attention, the expertise and experience of senior judges will be continually harnessed.

The annual inclusion of internationally revered and experienced tasters contributes to the favourable reputation of this wine competition. This year six esteemed international judges joined forces with the highly qualified Veritas group of almost a hundred local judges. Local and inter-national wine and brandy buyers put a high premium on the Veritas results as the stringent and unbiased judging standards by specialist panels produce trustworthy results that act as a reliable barometer of quality.

Due to the fact that participating wineries must have a minimum of 1 200 bottles of their entered wines or brandies in stock ensures that consumers are in effect pulled closer to the results of the competition and can buy, taste and talk about the winners.

The SANWSA would like to thank wineries and brandy cellars that have entered their pride and joy to be put to the test. We are grateful to the qualified judges that have freely offered their time and expertise to partake in the marathon judging of such a large number of wines and brandies. We also salute the individuals who have done their bit behind the scenes and so ensured that the 2012 Veritas competition ran like a well-oiled machine.

SIX WINE AND BRANDY GIANTS HONOURED

The vibrant and economically important South African wine and brandy industry is built on the shoulders of men and women who have, through the ages, dedicated their time and efforts to the promotion of the fruit of the vine.

The Veritas Legends initiative annually acknowledges the invaluable pas-sion and drive with which these iconic individuals have shaped the industry through their wine making abilities, viticulture contribution, writing about it, researching it, promoting it, and simply breathing it.

Half a dozen industry greats were lauded during the Veritas Awards ceremony.

John Gainsford, well known rugby player who was capped 33 times between 1960 and 1967, was indeed an esteemed representative of the Springbok emblem but later in life John chose to represent the wine industry. He worked for Union Wine, Graham Beck and then DGB as their international director focusing on sales and promotions. For more than 30 years, even during the times when sanctions seriously impaired wine exports, John won over the palates of wine lovers in Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Mauritius.

Danie Terblanche was lauded for his years as MD of Union Wine and for service to the wine industry through membership of a variety of industry bodies.

Willem Joubert’s involvement in the wine industry spans more than 20 years and Veritas honours him for his role as lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch and as General Manager at Ashton Cellar. Willem fur-thermore shared his knowledge and expertise on several industry bod-ies.

Veritas acknowledges Helmie de Vries for his contribution to producing quality wines as cellar master at Koelenhof Cellar and the training of many young wine makers.

Andries van Tonder has played an invaluable role through his involve-ment of 30 years at the SA Liquor Brandowners’ Association (SALBA) – formerly known as the CWSI (Cape Wine and Spirit Institute).

Pierre Loubser has been involved in the rewriting of many of the liquor laws which govern this vibrant and growing industry. His contribution to the Estate Wine Producers and Pinotage Association has also not gone unnoticed.

2012 MedaL Overview

The authoritative Veritas Awards celebrates more than two decades as South Africa’s biggest wine competition and most highly-esteemed indicator of quality market ready wines.

This year, 1 744 wines and brandies were rated by an authoritative line-up of international judges joined by local wine specialists.

Sauvignon Blanc topped this year’s entries with 211 entries, followed by Shiraz (181) and Cabernet Sauvignon (146). The category for brandy drew 33 standard, vintage and pot still brandies.

A total of 1 381 medals were awarded this year: 58 double gold, 147 gold, 499 silver and 677 bronze.

Sauvignon blanc (no wood) took the lead in the double gold medal stakes with 8 awards, followed by Pot Still Brandy (7), Cabernet Sauvignon (5), Shiraz (5), Chardonnay (wooded) (4), Red blends (4), Pinotage (4), Merlot (3), Port (3), Chenin Blanc (no wood) (2), Chenin Blanc (wooded) (2), Noble Late Harvest (no wood) (2), Méthode Cap Classique (2), Sauvignon Blanc (wooded) (1), Straw wine (1), Red Muscadel (1). In the Museum Class Dessert wine (2), White wine (1) and Noble Late Harvest (1) won double gold medals.

Red blends topped the list of gold medal winners with 16 awards, fol-lowed by Cabernet Sauvignon (12), Chardonnay (wooded) (10), Merlot (10), Chenin Blanc (no wood) (9), Méthode Cap Classique (8), Sauvignon blanc (no wood) (8), Potstill Brandy (7), Chenin Blanc (wooded) (6), Pinotage (5), Shiraz (5), Red Muscadel (5), Chardonnay (no wood) (3), Noble Late Harvest (no wood) (3), Dessert wine (3), Port (3), White blends (no wood) (2), White blends (wooded) (2), Riesling (no wood) (2), Natural sweet (2), Standard Brandy (2), Sémillon (no wood) (1), Sémillon (wooded) (1), Viognier (wooded)(1), Noble Late Harvest (wooded) (1), Special Late Harvest (no wood) (1), Rosé (1), Cabernet Franc (1), Pinot Noir (1), Other Red Cultivars (1), White Muscadel (1), Sherry (1). This year, six esteemed international experts joined forces with more

than 100 local judges to taste and evaluate 1 744 wines and brandies

contending for top honours in the Veritas Awards.

The international contingent comprised: Hwee Peng Lim (Singapore) a

certified wine specialist, wine and spirits judge, speaker and journalist;

Thomas Lüber (Germany) chief buyer of South African wines for WIV

Wein International AG; Swedish importer Janåke Johansson, owner of

Janåke Wine Group; Australian-born Richard Rowe, currently chief

wine-maker at KWV; Denis Lahouratate (France) cellar master at the

House of Bisquit Cognac and Dave Hughes, one of South Africa’s leading

wine and spirits experts and an internationally acknowledged judge.

The formidable local team consisted of wine makers, researchers, aca-

demics, Cape Wine Masters, wine buyers, wine writers and consultants.

A wine judging certificate from the University of Stellenbosch, the Wine

Judging Academy, a Cape Wine Master Diploma or similar accreditation

is a prerequisite for inclusion in the tasting panels.

Entries are tasted blind in groups of ten wines/brandies by panels of

seven judges. Following a discussion a consensus score is then awarded

according to a 20 point scale: 18 or more wins a double gold; 17 points

is worth gold and silver goes to a 16 point wine/brandy. A bronze medal

goes to a wine/brandy with 15 points.

Independent auditors audit the entire judging procedure and vouch for

the reliability of the results.
