WHAT IS VOIP?
Voice over IP is the technology of digitizing sound , compressing it, breaking it up into data packets, and sending it over an IP(internet protocol) network where it is reassembled, decompressed, and converted back into an analog wave form.
VoIP is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using broadband internet connection instead of traditional phone line.
Simply the Future replacement of PSTN (public switched telephone network) .
Voice over Internet Protocol is the transport of voice over IP based data networks like WAN, MAN and LAN.
Many vendors and technology organizations are involved in VoIP Technology such as Cisco, VocalTec, 3Com, Microsoft, USRobotics and NetSpeak.
VOIP INFRASTRUCTURE
REQUIREMENTS OF VOIP
EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED: A broadband (high speed Internet) connection is
required. A computer, adaptor, or specialized phone is
required. Sound card,speakers.
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Voice Processing Module - to prepare voice samples for transmission.
A PCM Interface – to receive samples from the telephony interface(eg.voice card) and forward them to VoIP software for further processing.
Idle Noise Detection – to supress packet transmission on the network when there no voice signals to be sent.
Call Signaling Module – to serve as a signaling gateway which allows calls to be estabilished.
The Packet Voice Protocol – to encapsulate
compessed voice and fax data for transmission over the network.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
Media/VOIP Gateways(gateways)
• They are used for call admission and control and also for bandwidth management.
• Create VoIP packets from analogue voice signal using CODECs.
IP NETWORK The IP network connects the, often distributed, elements of a VoIP network. As VoIP traffic is sensitive to delay, Quality of Service must be maintained.
Full Duplex Voice Cards which allow both communicating parties to
speak at the same time - as often happens in
reality.
WORKING OF VOIP
VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination.
WAYS OF MAKING VOIP CONNECTION
The three ways are:
COMPUTER TO COMPUTER This mode is the most common, as it is so easy and free.
You need to have a computer connected to the Internet, with the necessary hardware to speak and listen (either a headset or speakers and a microphone). You can install voice communication software like Skype and you are ready to talk.

PHONE TO PHONE
This mode is very handy. It implies using a phone set on each end to communicate.
There are two ways in which you can use phones to make VoIP calls:
• Using IP Phones
• Using an ATA

DISADVANTAGES AND IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES
The quality and overall reliability of the phone connection is entirely reliant upon the quality, reliability, and speed of the internet connection.
Emergency calls, cannot easily be routed to a nearby call center, and are impossible on some VoIP systems .
CONCLUSION
VoIP is one of the most happening sectors of telecommunication technologies where people can send voice and data at relatively cheap rates. Considering the applications and economic benefits of the technology, and the fact that more companies are joining the VoIP bandwagon with their own neat little applications, it may be expected that the future belongs to VoIP.
