NON-EU CITIZENS

Residence permit

The Residence Permit is issued by Police

Headquarters (“Questura”) and entitles you

to temporarily live in Italy.

What is this?

When do I get it?The request for the Residence Permit must be

made WITHIN 8 WORKING DAYS

from your arrival in Italy, and, at the moment, it

is valid for a maximum of ONE YEAR.

That means that, according to the current

legislation, you need to renew it every year.

The Residence Permit for study

purposes allows you to carry out

a part-time job for a maximum of

20 weekly hours and a yearly limit

of 1,040 hours.

You will have to successfully pass

at least 1 exam in the first year of

study.

HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE

FOR THE APPLICATION WORK?

• MODULO 1: remember to fill it out with a black pen

• PASSPORT: A copy of your passport (just the page

containing your personal data + VISA)

• SELF-CERTIFICATE: Copy of self-certification printed from

Polimi website, attesting your enrollment

• ADMISSION LETTER: Copy of the admission letter stamped

by the Italian Embassy

• HEALTH INSURANCE: Copy of your health insurance

There you will be asked to show your

passport (or equivalent document) and PAY:

your residence displaying the Sportello Amico sign.

“Marca da Bollo” (stamp that can purchased at any Tobacco

shop), to be put on the residence permit application.

2nd Step: Immigration Office.What to do next

HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE FOR

THE APPLICATION WORK?

Together with the receipt, the Post Office will also give you

a letter inviting you to go to the Immigration Office in a

certain date and time in order to take your fingerprints and

show all the originals of the documents you put in the kit.

You’ll be also asked to sign an Integration Agreement. To

AT THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE

On the day of the appointment, remember

to bring with you:

Inviting you to go back to the

Immigration Office one more time

(about 30/50 days later) in order to

get your electronic Residence

Permit.

YOU WILL RECEIVE ANOTHER LETTER

Overall it takes around

ONE MONTH AN A HALF

to obtain the Residence Permit, from the moment

you submit the kit at the Post

TRAVELLING WITH

THE RESIDENCE PERMIT

What to dowhile waiting for the first issue of the permit

It is strongly suggested to check with the

Embassy/Consulate of the country of interest whether it is

necessary to apply for a visa or not.

When travelling abroad it is mandatory to bring the

residence permit in order to entry Italy again

The entry visa for stays longer than 90 days allow long-

term residence on the soil of the State that issued it and,

as long as it is valid, free circulation for a period of no

more than 90 days every six months on the soil of

another Schengen State [Source: Farnesina website]

WHILE WAITING

ONCE IT IS ISSUED

It is possible to travel everywhere just holding both the

residence permit and the passport (regardless of the visa

validity) but it is forbidden to stay away from Italy for

more than 6 months

TRAVELLING TO NON SCHENGEN COUNTRIES

1. A copy of your passport or equivalent document

2. Copy of documentation certifying the availability of adequate

financial resources (about €. 5,830- e.g. scholarship certification

or print out of a bank account)

3. Self-certification printed from Polimi website, attesting your

enrolment

IF YOU ARE AN EU CITIZEN

If you are planning to live in Italy for more than 90 days, you must

register to the “Ufficio Anagrafe” (Registry Office) by booking an

appointment on:
