MARKETS
• Eurolactis have long-lasting collaboration with CNR and University of
Torino on the characterization and use of Donkey milk for infant
nutrition;
• Mainly for its use as alternative food for children allergic to cow’s
milk proteins (Monti et al., 2007):
• The extensive biochemical characterization of Donkey milk (Bertino
et al, 2010, Gastaldi et al., 2010) demonstrated that Donkey milk is
more similar to human milk than any other mammalian milk (from
« milkable » animals);
• Studies by other groups recently demonstrated that - when fed as a
supplement - Donkey milk affects glucose metabolism in a manner
more similar to human milk than cow milk, reducing body fat storage
(Lionetti et al, 2012, Trinchese et al. 2015);
• Recent evidences of an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential
(as compared to bovine milk).
FortiLat Initiative & Partners
Donkey/Jenny’s milk: a precious Legacy
We designed and set-up a large clinical trial of innovative human milk protein supplement derived from Donkey Milk…
Rationale Preterm infant feeding should be tailored on specific nutritional requirements, especially in terms of protein supply, to complement mother’s own milk (fortification of breast milk). Donkey milk is considered as more similar to breast milk with respect to ruminant’s milk from a biochemical and compositional point of view Hypothesis Biological evidences indicate that Donkey Milk could provide preterm neonates with adequate nutrients when used in individual human milk fortification studies

Donkey/Jenny’s milk: a precious Legacy
Stage I
Design, pilot scale production and biochemical characterization of DonkeyMilk derived
fortifiers (FortiLat).

(Owners: CNR; UNITO; CONTI, A ; MORO, G)
Exclusively licenced to: Eurolactis Italia srl
Stage II
Evaluation of nutritional suitability of FortiLat for preterm nutrition in a controlled randomized
blind clinical trial, in comparison to bovine milk based fortifiers
FortiLat Initiative
Donkey/Jenny’s milk: a precious Legacy
First outcomes
Recruited: 156 preterm neonates (gestational weight < 1500gr and/or gestational age < 32 weeks)
In the FortiLat fed group: • Lower incidence of feeding intolerance • Lower incidence of secondary signs of reduced tolerability
Trend toward evidence of better tolerability of FortiLat with respect to traditional bovine
milk based fortifiers
FortiLat Initiative
• The milk production begins the day after the haddock’s birth (Jenny’s foal);
• A Shedonkey gives about 3l /day during seven months after foals birth
(pregnancy cycle = about 11.5 months);
• It is necessary to wait one month before exploiting the Jenny
• Donkeys are rudimentary, but they have to be well fed
• Jenny likes fresh and clean water
• Milking requires delicate touch and know-how
• The Jenny has only two nipples
• Eurolactis studied the best ways of preserving and guaranteeing the
nutritional values of this extraordinary milk
• Eurolactis concluded milk agreements with experienced stockbreeders of
more than 15 years.
