Open Office Impress Open Office Impress is an open source free software program used for creating multimedia presentations. It is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, therefore providing an easy transition from the Microsoft Office Suite. Most tools and features are available and located in similar places. There are a few differences in some areas, such as:

- Starting a slide show - Working with graphics & charts - Adding special effects - Placing final touches on slide show presentation

Sections of the Impress Window

Title Bar- Displays the name of the presentation & application software

Menu Bar- Lists the software commands in drop-down menu style

Standard Toolbar- Displays the software commands in picture icon style

Presentation Toolbar- Displays icons for adding new slides & slide design

Line & Filling Toolbar- Displays icons for creating lines and arrows

Slide Pane- Displays thumbnail images of slides in the presentation

Task Pane- Displays drop-down menus used to format the presentation

Slide Window- Displays the “active” slide currently being prepared

Drawing Toolbar- Displays icons used to create shapes and edit pictures

Status Bar- Displays selected dimensions, zoom percentage, slide number and design

Opening Impress

1. Double click the Open Office icon on the desktop. 2. Click the “Presentation” icon in the startup window.

3. OR You may click the “Start” button, got to “All programs,” locate “OpenOffice.org, and click on “OpenOffice Impress.”

Creating a Presentation

After Impress has been opened, you will see the startup menu displayed below. To begin with a blank presentation, simply click on the “Create” button in the lower right-hand corner of the presentation wizard.

To use a template design or open a saved presentation, click the radial button beside either option, select the presentation, and click “Next” or “Open.”

Continue clicking “Next” to make initial changes to slide design and transition before creating the presentation.

*Note: To skip the wizard and always begin with a blank presentation, check the “do not show this wizard again” box in the first presentation wizard box. (See figure on bottom of Page 3.)

Slide Layouts

In the task pane, you will see a tab titled “Layouts” with different layouts listed in the frame. Slide Layouts design how information will be displayed on a slide. By clicking on them in the task pane, it will change the current slide to the chosen layout as seen below:

To add a new slide to the presentation, click the “Slide” button in the Presentation toolbar. After a new slide has been added to the presentation, it will be shown in the Slide Pane on the left. Its layout can then be changed by clicking a different layout under the “Layout” tab.

Adding Text To add text to a presentation, simply click on the text placeholder. A blinking cursor will then appear that indicates you may begin typing. Strike the “Enter” key to move down one line after typing text. When creating bulleted lists, another bullet will appear each time you strike “Enter” on the keyboard. To remove the bullet, simply strike Backspace on your keyboard. To format text in a presentation, you must first add the “Text Formatting” toolbar. This is performed by clicking “View,” moving down to “Toolbars,” and clicking “Text Formatting” on the pop-out menu. This toolbar can be used to change font size, color, bolding, italics, justification and other options.

Adding Pictures To add pictures to a presentation, you must first select a layout that contains a section for adding graphics. The graphics icon will indicate where they can be added. Double-click inside the box to generate an insert menu. When the menu appears, find the location of the saved picture on your computer. Click the picture to select it, and it will appear in the selected box of the presentation as shown below.

Adding ClipArt

To add Clip Art to a presentation, you must first select a layout that contains a section for adding graphics. The graphics icon will indicate where they can be added. Click the box to select it. Next, click on the “Gallery” icon in the Drawing Toolbar. A gallery box will appear with various clip art images. Right-click the image you wish to select and a pop-out menu will appear. Move across to “Insert” and click “Copy.” The image will appear on the slide. Handles

The image can be resized by clicking and dragging the green handles surrounding the image. To resize the image proportionally, hold down the “Shift” key while dragging the corner of the image. To move the image, simply click and hold on the image itself to move it in the direction you wish. Note: These resizing instructions also apply to inserted pictures from your computer.

Adding Charts & Diagrams

To add a chart or diagram to a presentation, you must first select a layout that contains a section for adding charts or diagrams. The charts icon will indicate where they can be added. (See figure on page 7 for examples of layout options.) Double-click inside the box to activate the chart. The chart will be magnified solely in the window with options for changing the chart type, data fields, and layouts. Click anywhere outside the slide to return to the main template.

Adding FontWork

To add FontWork, click on the FontWork Gallery icon in the Drawing Toolbar. A pop-up menu will appear for you to select the type of FontWork to place in your presentation. Click on a selection to place on the slide. Double-click the FontWork to edit the text. When you have finished typing, click elsewhere on the slide. Like images and clipart, FontWork can be resized by clicking and dragging the green handles surrounding the image. To resize the image proportionally, hold down the “Shift” key while dragging the corner of the image. Master Pages Templates Master Pages Templates add color and design elements to your presentation. To use one, simply click on the “Master Pages” tab in the task pane. Different templates available for use will be displayed in the pane. Click on to select it for your presentation. You will see it displayed on the current slide in the main window.

Different Views in Impress

Click Tabs to Select Normal- Shows each slide one at a time. This is the normal default view shown in the picture above. Outline- Shows the text of the presentation and no pictures. Each slide is shown in chronological order. Notes- Shows each slide on a separate page with the typed notes under it. Handout- Shows six slides per page, as reflected on handouts. Slide Sorter- Shows each slide in thumbnail view with pictures, text, and charts.

Transitions & Animations Slide transitions determine how the presentation shifts from one slide to the next. To add transitions, click the “Slide Transition” tab in the task pane. This tab will show options for different transitions and transition speeds. Slide Animations determine how the content of your presentation will be presented on the slide. To add animation, click the “Custom Animation” tab in the task pane. Transitions Animations

Viewing & Printing

You can view the slide show presentation by clicking “View” on the Menu Bar and then “Slide Show.” Alternatively, you can also strike F5 on the keyboard. To print the presentation, click “File” and “Print” on the Menu Bar. A pop-up menu will appear with printing options. You may wish to print slides, handouts, or notes pages. Look in the “Content” box to make your selection and click “OK.”
