Witchcraft: Women’s Power in a Patriarchal Society What do we mean by “Witchcraft”? : Witch = “wicce” ( old English) a female magician, sorceress. A woman supposed to have dealings with the devil or evil spirits and to be able by their cooperation to perform supernatural acts. Craft = power or skill Is it typically Moroccan? Lately, the Middle-Eastern media has circulated many articles, documentaries, TV shows and series in which the Moroccan woman is prototyped as a “Witch”. Saudi newspapers published articles that tells the stories of some Saudi women who complain against the government which allows Moroccan women to work as maids in Saudi Arabia because they belief that Moroccan maids steal their husbands by the use of witchcraft and black magic spells. In their movies the witch is Moroccan! In their TV programs Morocco Is where witchcraft and magic are practised most! All these are stereotypes, and the middle-eastern media is over generalizing: -The existence of the idea of magic in the Islamic religion made the majority of Arab Muslims believe in such practises. So, it’s not necessarily Moroccan, it is a part of the Islamic culture - It is more concerned with (humanity) in general. Humans since antiquity used witchcraft and magic either as a form of religion or medicine (tribes in Africa, indigenous Americans, etc). Also, it is mentioned in the Christian and Jewish religion.
