Chapter 5 – Chapter Introduction
• Purpose:• Learn the different writing tasks analysis• Also go through different writing processes including the planning, body writing, and draft stages
Chapter 5 – Key Concepts (Explanation)
• Task Analysis:• Will assist you to follow the writing instructions,
also known as the rubric• Focus on required information based on the task
given.• Key Task Analysis:
• Advise, Explain, Clarify, Identify, Examine, Analyse, Critically Review, Interpret, Describe, Define, List, Name, and Summarise

• The Planning Stage:• Include the following stages:
• Collecting Ideas > Look for information, consult several sources, make point form notes, speak to experts, and let your thoughts incubate
• Draw up a paragraph plan > draw a rough grid, jot down one main idea for each paragraph, use key words, compare your completed grid to the task given to see if you have left out anything.
• Writing Topic Sentence > Each paragraph is topic driven, and good topic sentence sets the limits for that paragraph

• Writing The Body:• Writing Introductions:
• Needs to make a good impression• Introduction should echo the rubric, take ownership of the information and
define terms, avoid indefinite pronouns, and emphasis your logic with words.• Writing a Conclusion:
• Should leave a lasting and positive impression• Should show how all your points fit together• Re-state your main point or argument• Look to the future through your predictions• Call for a change in attitude / view point > make recommendations• Summarise all your points, ask interesting questions, and sum up new words

• Writing The Body:• Paragraph Development:
• While writing each paragraph, bear in mind what your purpose is.
• Your topic sentence (often the first sentence) should pave a way for you to achieve that purpose
• Connection Between Paragraphs:• Keep your reader with you all the time.• Make the links from one paragraph to the next very clear by …

• Final Draft:• Look over your draft and find ways to improve it• To do this you need to:• Edit for succinctness > said in a clear and short way;
expressing what needs to be said without unnecessary words• Edit for clarity > the quality of being certain or
definite• Edit for coherent > logical links and consistent

• Final Draft:• Proofread:
• This is the last phase of the writing process• In this process one checks for:
• typing errors• homophones• spelling• punctuation• verb agreement • pronoun agreement
Chapter 5 – Summary
• Once you understand that writing is aprocess, it becomes easy.• This process is summarised as follows:
• First brainstorm and research your ideas• Sort the into paragraph plans• Keep your reader in mind as you develop
your paragraphs• Make the links between and within
paragraphs clear• Finally, always edit and proofread your
writing to ensure a professional finish
