Legislated MHSC Mandate• Advise the Minister on all occupational health and safety issues in the
mining industry relating to legislation, research and promotion.• Review and develop legislation for recommendation to the Minister
(Focus on Regulations, MRAC).• Oversee research in relation to health and safety in
the mining industry (CoE, SIMRAC).• Liaise with other bodies concerned with health and
safety issues (MQA, State Departments and various Stakeholders).
• Promote health and safety culture in the mining industry.

• Research and innovation by institutions playing a key role in improving SA’s globalcompetitiveness and developing a base for the knowledge economy.

The following advisory notes were submitted to the Minister of Mineral Resources:• Handbook on Personal Protective Equipment for Women in Mining (WIM).• Identify Opportunities to Improve Barring Down Practices. (Preventing FOG’s)• Fluid-Induced Seismicity in the Central Basin Area: Ground Motion Prediction and the
Development of an Early Warning System for Risk Reduction.• Identification, Selection and Promotion of TB Leading Practices in the South African
Mining Industry.• Noise Measurement of Equipment to ensure Compliance with MHSC Milestones.• Guidelines for Small Scale Mines to comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act, as
amended.

Personal Protective Equipment for Women in Mining:
• Mandatory Code of Practice Guideline for Personal Protective Equipment;

Safe Barring Practices Training modules“Minimising the increasing rockburst risk in the platinummines.” The project developed some innovative animatedlearning (videos) and awareness training material to assiststhe mines to train both their production and rock engineeringpersonnel on how to manage seismic risk and how to avoidpractices that are known to result in increased seismic hazard.

Promote and Communicate MHSC Programmes to Improve OHS AwarenessThe communication plan consisted of the following initiatives amongst others:
• Conducting the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Summit, Compensation Summitand Occupational Health Dialogue.
• Regional Tripartite Forums (RTFs).• Providing opinions on media related articles.• Commemoration of mining disasters (Kinross).• Hosting of conferences (Women in Mining (WiM) / TB Awareness/HIV&AIDS
Awareness).• Promoting MHSC work through Exhibitions and Presentations by Participation in:
o Mining Indaba, Mine Safe Conference, and various Conferences and Workshops.

by our Principals in 2014 Summit, recommitment to milestones
• Action plan developed currently being implemented
• Progress review in the November 2016 Summit

Implementing a WiM Awareness Programme
1. Promulgation of the WIM PPE guideline;2. Development of WIM booklets in different languages;3. Hosting the WIM march and students workshop
respectively in August 2016 and4. Workshops on Prevention of Sexual Harassment.

• The Mine Health and Safety Council identified the need to host an Occupational HealthDialogue which provided a platform used to focus solely on Occupational Health. The aimis to lead to greater awareness and focus on Occupational Health issues that are foundin the SAMI (South African Mining Industry)

Occupational Health Dialogue
• The new performance management system was procured and is being customised to suit theneeds of MHSC (automation of the process).
• The system will be able to link the MHSC performance with the individual employeeperformance and produce reports automatically, monthly and quarterly.
Enhance Effectiveness of Employee Performance Management Process

• The new Enterprise Project Management (EPM) system was procured and projects wereloaded on the EPM system.
• The EPM system is being customised to produce the reports as per the MHSC needs.
• Centre of Excellence (CoE):o The five key processes on the implementation of CoE as per the approved CoE
Business Plan have been completed: Organisational Design; Change and Communication Management; Establishing the Dissemination and Commercialisation function within CoE, Information Technology Infrastructure and Architecture and Corporate Governance Policies and Procedures reviews.
o The MHSC is in the recruitment process of the newly established positions.
Deliver MHSC projects on Brief, Budget and Time (BBT).
